NFT: christmas tree lights

snickers : 11/21/2021 1:07 pm
Just finished the annual ritual and again many of the lights for the tree do not work. I carefully wrap them and store them in a cool place as suggested but to no avail. I find this to be such a scam each and every year. What upsets me most is that sometimes one half of the string doesnt work and no matter what is attempted it remains a problem. Anyone have suggestions or are we all in the same boat?
Never had that problem

But I have fake prelit tree so that might be a factor.

LED lights are becoming more prevalent seemingly everywhere. I bet they would be a good option, but I've only used them outside myself. I haven't tried them on a tree.

Buy LEDs...ditch the frustration
Buy quality lights

If half your strand is out, you’re buying crap. Good quality light keep the whole strand lit when a bulb goes bad.
Yes happens every year

Even testing each strand of lights before putting on the tree.

The strands that are half lit are done, throw them away.

But testing each light before putting them on does help it from becoming too much of a problem
LED ....

I've gone thru the who string with a meter, still didn't work. Replaced everything with LEDs.

LEDs look cheesy to me

Unless anybody knows of a brand with a nice warm glow.
If you get LEDs …
Brown_Hornet : 11/21/2021 2:36 pm : link
…look for a warm kelvin temp (2700-3000k)
The cool temps (3500+… yes the higher the number the cooler the temperature) look blue.

Or buy the cheapest lights you can and throw them away every year.
You can wrap them up and store them but if they don’t work don’t get stressed just pitch the things in the trash and go to Lowe’s.
I just throw mine out

every year and buy new ones the following year. A lot less aggravating IMO.
Always a PIA

Throw out most of the lights each year.

Good advice. I've had good success with warm LEDs on our tree (i don't like the ones that aren't warm). I've actually had pretty good luck with colored lights outside whether LED or not.

Switching to led lights would save me a lot of headaches each year, but I have a prelit multicolor tree and I have yet to find anything that looks as good as a tree with incandescent bulbs. They're just warmer and more natural. So i stick with it every year, despite having to replace 10 to 20% of bulbs each time.
The small lights which marketed so extensively now are

nothing more than planned obsolescence ..they totally suck and need to replaced every couple of years....I have the old lights handed down from mom .... ones that get hot....they work year after year.... they are like 40 years old...welcome to 2021
See if you can find strings wired parallel
KeoweeFan : 11/21/2021 6:05 pm : link
If they are wired in series (as the original electric tree lights were) the "juice" must pass thru each bulb to get to the next. A burned out bulb will stop the sequence.

I just read that some of the new LED strings are wired in parallel.

I switched to LEDs 6 years ago. It’s no better. Every year, a bunch of strands go dead. I’ve bought the good stuff and I’ve bought the crap stuff- both are shit. The expensive ones might die off at a slightly lower rate but they’re still not good.

Yes, LED bulbs do last much longer but I’ve learned that the main issue is garbage-quality electronics and poor quality wire connections at each bulb and plug. No brand has figured out how to do this right at a reasonable cost.
