I mentioned this yesterday on the game thread. I didn't like Hurts out of OK/AL and thought the Eagles over-drafted him even as a second rounder. Hell, I still don't like the way he throws.
But Hurts is another one of those who you can just categorize as good football player playing QB. The guy just knows how to score points. And I believe he has the best QBR over the last month in the NFL - 62, 67, 91, 95.
For the year, he's got a 52 QBR, completing 62%, has 13TDs/5INTs, is 7+ YPA/AY/A, and he's rushed for 600+ yards and another 8 TDs.
So in total, he's got 21 TDs. And the Eagles are now 8th in the league in PPG scored. I doubt anyone would, btw, call his supporting cast one of the top 10-15 in the league.
Probably time to call Hurts what he is - a poor man's LJax.
The Eagles recent success is due to a potent running game, and their defense is playing decent and actually scoring. They've scored three TDs in the last two weeks.
You figure Hurts to improve as a passer, but the question is how much better?
And while the running is fantastic, how long can it last before injury....when that's his primary method of moving the football (between running and throwing).
I think Hurts would eventually flame out - as someone said to a very good backup - but in today's NFL...who knows?
The big question is as the Eagles improve (if they in fact do over the next few years), does Hurts take the step up in improvement as well. Or does he just remain a wildcard type player.
I still have reservations about him in the pocket. The question for Philly is, can they build an offense around him like Balt has with Lamar? As well as Hurts has played, he's not Lamar Jax-good.
He also loves Daniel Jones. So….he must be crazy then…amirite???
I always thought Hurts was an NFL athlete. But from a throwing standpoint, and I still think this holds, there is nothing plus about his game. So imaging this kind of success in his first full year as a QB starter has been a huge surprise to me.
I figured he'd be a high end back-up that could be used in packages ala Taysom Hill in New Orleans.
But if you saw this coming, good call by you.
The Eagles are getting a hell of an ROI right now.
This recent run game success has come without Miles Sanders for the most part (just returned this week from a 3 week IR stint), and has come at the hands of Hurts/Jordan Howard (on the practice squad for weeks)/Boston Scott.
Besides Devonta Smith, their WR room is subpar at best. Quez Watkins (2020 6th rounder), is their #2 WR at 73% of the offensive snaps, and underwhelming 2020 first rounder Jalen Reagor is 3rd (still can't believe they took him over Justin Jefferson). Goedert is a legit weapon at TE, and with his recent extension, Smith/Goedert figure to lead the charge on a revamped O in the coming years.
But does he have the arm and the head to consistently put the team on his back and lead Eli-esque type triumphs when his team is down big time or bigly as a famous person once said?
Oh, I think Hurts has a very good football IQ. His arm talent is lower half of the league.
But, yes, I think his best work right now in on the lead. I think he might have on GWD this year...?
Regardless, Hurts could develop over time into a solid, traditional QB in the pocket. I still think there is risk in that projection, which is why Philly was always mentioned in the Watson sweepstakes, but the kid always finds a way. He certainly has the winning gene and instincts.
Can we let him finish a full season first?
He's had a great start, good for him. Maybe the league catches up to him, maybe not - but making these declarations after 11 games is ridiculous...

Well, that's why I called him a poor man's LJax.
I agree we need more time to evaluate Hurts. But he's exceeding expectations 2-3 fold at this point.

To be fair, many people were making similar declarations on the other end that Hurts wasn't any good and would never be a legit NFL quarterback back before he even had 11 games under his belt. Objectively, he's had a very good start to his career as QB and is on a solid trajectory.

You are kind of LOL yourself, aren't you?
Most Defenders of the Faith around hear the name LJAX and they start downplaying how he hasn't done anything and when the weather starts getting cold, he's a worthless QB. Now somebody mentions a "poor man's LJAX" in describing Hurts, and in an effort to downplay Hurts you actually prop up LJAX as being something special.
And like most clueless defenders, probably didn't even notice...
If the NFL gods are done torturing NYG and their faithful this is what we'd get. But I am skeptical.
Hey, Dave Gettleman is far from an NFL god.

He's started a whopping 11 games and you're already anointing him as a "poor man's LJAX"?

As usual, you have no fucking clue.
But carry on…
