Would you take a "damaged" Baker Mayfield over DJ

riceneggs : 11/23/2021 9:20 am
The media seemed to be down on Baker Mayfield (even tho they are a run 1st team that's been missing both RBs due to injuries)

When I watch him, he seems to be decent. Can make some throws, etc

Would you make a trade for him and move on from DJ? Or is Baker trash too

Otherwise, where are we getting a QB?
Nah
madeinstars : 11/23/2021 9:21 am : link
I think he is better than Jones, but he's not a top-15 QB at this point and he's going to be way too expensive.
No way
Giantophile : 11/23/2021 9:22 am : link
marginal upgrade at best, Baker is not the answer for anyone.
Doesn't matter this staff would ruin him anyway. I honestly think
Blue21 : 11/23/2021 9:23 am : link
Jones goes to another team and becomes a very good QB. No one is succeeding here.
He's more than a marginal upgrade,
Section331 : 11/23/2021 9:24 am : link
but he's going to be more expensive than your standard veteran retread. He's not a bad player, but we're looking at a multi-year rebuild. We need either a cheap rookie or a cheaper veteran.
I’m not sure Baker would handle
mfsd : 11/23/2021 9:24 am : link
NY media that well. Wouldn’t care if he was Mahomes or Rodgers, but he’s not
In a vacuum, for this season
Bear vs Shark : 11/23/2021 9:25 am : link
yes. If we're talking about a more "in real life" scenario where Baker is going to have to go get paid, no.
he's better, but he's also in one of the best offenses in the league
UConn4523 : 11/23/2021 9:26 am : link
and really doesn't move the needle for them. Giving him a big contract would be criminal.

So I'd rather DJ on his rookie deal than Mayfield at $30m+.
I'd rather
JohninSC : 11/23/2021 9:27 am : link
not bring national attention to the Giants shitty stadium with "Baker at home" commercials.

No thanks.
i'd take almost any QB in the league over jones right now.
japanhead : 11/23/2021 9:31 am : link
jones is probably worse than sam darnold at this point, or is at least trending in that direction. he probably should have been benched last night. he was completely ineffective.

and the week before the bye vs. the raiders he threw for 110 fucking yards. he is barely producing at the position. if jones was on the eagles or the redskins we'd all be laughing.

he is worse than many of the rookies drafted, and looks worse every week, whereas undrafted guys like heinicke are outplaying him and showing marked improvement every week.
Don't like him
jeff57 : 11/23/2021 9:35 am : link
A good rookie season. Hasn't done much since.
Mayfield is not an upgrade
Thunderstruck27 : 11/23/2021 9:39 am : link
He can't win without a running game. We would be winless this year with Mayfield at QB
a healthy Mayfield is better than Jones.

There are so many different directions we could go
jerseygiant : 11/23/2021 9:44 am : link
I'm fine giving Jones next year (with a new OC and O-line) (please God). I'm also fine if we bring in someone like Mariota. Guy showed some promise, went through a few different HCs and OCs, stalled, and was beat out by a vet that never really showed much (Tannehill). Him coming in and taking over for a young QB that has shown flashes, but not enough, would be full circle.

I just can't get on board with using a top 10 pick on Willis or Corral. Two top 10 picks on the trenches is so damn enticing. Time to finally get it right.

Why would anyone want him as QB?

That may be, but when he lost the running game he was not as good despite having OBJ and Landry at WR and a young Pro Bowl TE in Hooper. I do not think Mayfield is a QB you give a second contract to at current values. Better than Jones does not mean paying him $30+ Million per year. I would like to use our first 2 picks on fortifying our trenches if they are BPA and then use our high 2nd round pick to either trade back into the first round or stand pat and draft whatever QB falls (like Raiders did with Derek Carr). Having 2 big bodies in the trenches and Desmond Ridder sounds better than overdrafting Corral and taking BPA later.

Yea I am not sure about paying him either. That's the most intriguing test case, imo. But be clear OBJ and Hooper aren't good.

In the 3 years prior to going to Cleveland (his Age 23, 24, and 25 seasons), Hooper went from 49 to 71 to 75 catches and made 2 Pro Bowls. All of this depsite starting only 25 games (and playing in 45 overall). His numbers have dropped substantially across the board playing with Mayfield. OBJ is a prima donna, but he didn't suddenly forget how to play WR going to Cleveland. His numbers were better with a washed up Eli Manning and Ben McAdoo calling plays.
Baker? Hell no

I'm not high on Jones, but Baker isn't any better and has less upside. A healthy Baker has had many bad games with better talent on the OL and skill positions. Here he'd be putting up Danny Kanell numbers. No thanks.
If we can only take on or the other...
bw in dc : 11/23/2021 11:04 am : link
than it's an easy, quick decision - Mayfield is better than Jones. He's got more arm talent and he has a winning pedigree.
We are in the middle of a rebuild

Taking on a big vet QB contract is not the way to go.
I don't see the purpose
AcesUp : 11/23/2021 11:09 am : link
of trading one reclamation project for another.
Mayfield is a game above .500 for his career
UConn4523 : 11/23/2021 11:11 am : link
what he did in college is now irrelevant. I would not consider him a winner, in fact, he might not even be one of their top 5 players on offense. I think Cleveland is at .500 or so the last 4 years with most other bottom 1/3 QBs.

I think we see a lot more Daniel Jones in Mayfield if he were a Giant. His 2018 and 2019 seasons happened and on teams with better personnel. 2020 looks to be an outlier.
Mayfield came into the league...
bw in dc : 11/23/2021 11:17 am : link
as the #1 pick in 2018 to a team that was debacle. They didn't win a game in 2017. There were huge expectations. A heavy burden.

But they have chipped away steadily and have become a winning franchise. And Mayfield has been in the driver's seat for most of that transformation. He won a playoff game last year against division rival Pittsburgh.

So, yes, he is a winner. And he's been one his entire football life.

Look, he's not my type of QB. But I'm just sticking to the parameters defined by the OP.
no, the OP is asking which you'd rather have
UConn4523 : 11/23/2021 11:21 am : link
to which I agree I'd rather have Baker as long as it doesn't come with his shiny new contract.

You are talking about his winning pedigree and we must be watching something else. He's had 1 good NFL season (2020), 1 bad (2019) and 1 solid (2018). This year is incomplete but so far they are winning despite him. And you get to base your opinion watching him behind an elite OL and good skill position players, similar to what Power 5 college QB's get as well.

Mayfield would stink here, and we'd be talking about replacing him.
Sure I'd rather have Baker - yes
PatersonPlank : 11/23/2021 11:25 am : link
The question really becomes do you want to try again on a draft pick who is cheap, and a risk, or pay more for Baker who is a known quantity but just not a "top 5" guy. So it comes down to price with me (like anything else).
