Garretts firing gives Jones a 2nd chance

PatersonPlank : 11/23/2021 2:17 pm
After last nights debacle I am pretty down on Jones. However the reality here is that Judge just handed Jones a chance to survive. If he starts playing well and the offense starts scoring, people can point to Garrett and say it was his fault all along. If the play continues, whoever the new OC coming in is will likely want to start over.

Like it or not, Judge just handed Jones the "get out of jail" card. I'll bet this was a part of the thinking behind the change. Its easier to dump the OC than publicly give up on your #1 draft pick, which if things continued on was going to happen.
spot on

I am a huge defender
Essex : 11/23/2021 2:19 pm : link
but whatever Jones's ability, it was premised on new personnel as well as coaching. He just hasn't shown enough even with this bad personnel to think that it is only coaching. Consistency has been an issue and I think it will be that way with Kitchens or anyone else.
He threw Jones a lifeline
Mike from Ohio : 11/23/2021 2:20 pm : link
It's not a second chance. He has got to become a much better QB to survive.
Agreed
GiantTuff1 : 11/23/2021 2:20 pm : link
And if he doesn't rise up, then he is in serious jeopardy too.
to an extent
Scooter185 : 11/23/2021 2:20 pm : link
but if Jones doesn't improve, then the converse is true and will prove beyond a doubt he's not it.
Sure, but
JonC : 11/23/2021 2:21 pm : link
what do honestly think Jones' chances of succeeding are? 10%? He's clinging to this lifeline now.
Jones will be here next year
montanagiant : 11/23/2021 2:22 pm : link
With a new GM and hopefully a draft made to fix both the defense and offense lines. No more early show-pony picks. They have to get a legit edge rusher a coverage LB and at least 3 O-Linemen this offseason. Trade back and stockpile the picks
He has his own motives...
Coopcomic : 11/23/2021 2:23 pm : link
He has to save his own skin as well. My question is how long as he wanted to pull this trigger on this? Was Judge completely on board for Garrett from the start, or was it a shotgun marriage and he was finally given an ok. Wish I knew that to judge Judge.

He will certainly be here next year. The question is whether he is in a QB competition or simply the QB until his replacement is ready.
Agree
Andrew in Austin : 11/23/2021 2:26 pm : link
It seems to me we have 3 major players who are suspect. We kept saying we were waiting for our best players to be healthy, but another way to look at this is when they are in:

- Jones - seems to struggle if his first read is not open (which is often)

- Barkley - seems not sure about what he is supposed to do on a given play, seems to avoid contact in blocking and in running

- Golladay - seems to give inconsistent effort on any given play

These are supposed to be out best players on the team! Couple that with a porous O-Line, invisible TEs, it feels like our entire offense needs to be rebuilt from scratch.
DJ had 84 yards (I think) passing at halftime
Gmen703 : 11/23/2021 2:27 pm : link
How the hell can you win in a passing league with those numbers? I guess if you have a great defense (ha!).

JG should have been fired a long time ago. I don't have blind faith in DJ, but I know he's a better QB than that.
Couldn’t agree less
BillT : 11/23/2021 2:28 pm : link
Maybe marginally but with this OL not much is going to change.
Shurmur had a much better system
Simms11 : 11/23/2021 2:29 pm : link
for Jones. Hopefully Kitchens can at least make something out of the current scheme as it's not changing this year.
Jones should not be on this roster in 2022
Go Terps : 11/23/2021 2:29 pm : link
No reason to carry a lost cause.

Try 60 yards at half!
Anyone Looking At DJ After Last Night & Seeing a Franchise QB...
BMCBikes : 11/23/2021 2:30 pm : link
...is smoking something powerful. The poor play, the interceptions, the locking onto receivers, the body language, the look on his face...that guy is NOT a franchise QB and never will be.
Perhaps
Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/23/2021 2:31 pm : link
not sure how much they can really change with seven games left other than in-game playing calling (this could be significant, but they are not going to be able to re-design the offense).

IMO, this is more about Judge trying to save his own neck at this point than Jones.
You may be partially right
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/23/2021 2:32 pm : link
but I think Judge also recognizes the heat is headed his way in short order. Usually HC's first pass the blame.
A second chance for Bambi

Oh Boy, I can't wait how many new ways we can see the reality of Jones under pressure.

you are correct
I think this may be the reason why he was fired today...
EricJ : 11/23/2021 2:38 pm : link
Jones has just the rest of this season to prove the problem was NOT Garrett.
Jones
AcidTest : 11/23/2021 2:38 pm : link
will likely be here next year, but I doubt the team will pick up his fifth year option. A new GM will likely be correctly opposed to doing so.

Jones would play better with a halfway decent OL, but probably not enough to be considered the long term solution for the Giants. Even when he does have time to throw, he frequently still doesn't see the whole field. Some of that might be because he doesn't think his OL can protect him long enough for him to go through his progressions, but it also happens quite a bit when he has a clean pocket.
"Giving" Jones 2022 is a fucking toxic mindset
Go Terps : 11/23/2021 2:40 pm : link
.
It is a shot across Jones' bow
Thegratefulhead : 11/23/2021 2:40 pm : link
It is the OC or you buddy, we are about to find out. Judge will draft a QB if Jones doesn't figure it out. They should tell Jones to ball out. It matters little if we lose, so don't be afraid to throw an interception, win, make it happen, or the NFL stands for not for long.
Judge
Sammo85 : 11/23/2021 2:40 pm : link
has no interest in giving Jones a 2nd chance. He's now in "save my own" mode.

Jones is next up in the roulette revolver chamber to be thrown under the bus end of the season with Gettleman so Judge can justify "getting his QB".

I'm sure Kitchens will open the offense up a bit more on playcalls and situations (think red zone), but it will be hard to dramatically change the scheme with 7 games left.

One major watching point under Kitchens is he tends to want to play a more open gambling style (not Judge's MO) with vertical passing (not suited to our OL right now) so jury will be watching (no pun intended with Judge).
he's got 7 games
djm : 11/23/2021 2:41 pm : link
it's put up or shut up time. Actually that time long ago passes, but here we are nonetheless.

They better score 28-30 PPG here out or it's bye bye baby.
he's done here
djm : 11/23/2021 2:43 pm : link
I don't care who the OC is, Jones doesn't see the whole field. It's easy to see. The guy won't pull the trigger even when wrs are single covered.

When the play is designed well and the protection is there Jones is fine, problem is that happens only so often in any offense let alone this mess here.

Jones is a jag. He's done here but might be the backup in 2022 if the contract is doable.

Get me 5 road graders
gmenrule : 11/23/2021 2:44 pm : link
and a non-brittle RB. Then hand he ball off on every play. That will still be better than Garrett's offense was.

Both posts are exactly what I've been saying. You're a genius, Monty :)
It will be very interesting to see how Kitchens handles Jones
PatersonPlank : 11/23/2021 2:47 pm : link
He has been at practice every day for two seasons, and is on the inside regarding the Giants dynamics. He must have formed his own opinion on Jones capabilities, Garretts offense, etc.

If he continues with the overly safe, keep Jones from making a mistake stuff, that will be very telling in that he had roughly the same opinion of Jones and the OL. If he opens things up then that *may* show that he has more confidence in Jones and thinks the issues were with Garrett.
i am down on jones
mpinmaine : 11/23/2021 2:51 pm : link
i was backing him
The problem with the OP's premise...
Jim in Tampa : 11/23/2021 2:56 pm : link
is when he says that if Jones continues to play poorly "whoever the new OC coming in is will likely want to start over".

While I can see a new OC wanting to start over and move on from Jones... what team gives that kind of power to an OC?

HC or GM, sure. But an OC?
If you are Judge and wanted to rid yourself of Jones too
GiantTuff1 : 11/23/2021 3:02 pm : link
it makes it easier to show he failed with two play callers.

Interesting point and correct.
What we do not know
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/23/2021 3:14 pm : link
is what was Judge's input into the roster. What were his true feelings on the OL? What are his feelings on Jones? How involved is he in the draft? Roster construction?

I am certain Judge has a idea where he stands. Mara publicly supported him a couple weeks ago. If that is still the case then I have FK open it up. Let Jones sink or swim and if the turnovers increase you blame DG (who is gone regardless) and hope you are in good enough standing to draft the next QB.

Judge has to earn the right to select the next QB imo. In a draft that does not seem to have many options (2022) you are extending that to 2023. That is pretty strong faith to have in Judge without significant improvement regardless of QB.

What a mess.

The sooner this organization realizes Jones is not the answer,
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/23/2021 5:55 pm : link
the better. His pick last night...like, WTF? How does someone in his third season who was drafted #6th overall make that decision?

Nice kid & hard worker from all accounts. But he's not a starting QB in the NFL.
I don't think this will have
dan518 : 11/23/2021 7:43 pm : link
any positive effect on the offense. Could be wrong of course but this was strictly JJ trying to save his ass. That's all. Hopefully it's a start to what needs to be done.
You'e right on one hand
Bear vs Shark : 11/23/2021 7:45 pm : link
On the other hand, as others have said, if Jones continues to play poorly, then he's S.O.L and we know he's not the answer FOR SURE this time.

Either way, as Giants fans, this is what we wanted -- we're going to get our answer about Jones one way or the other.

ryanmkeane : 11/23/2021 10:41 pm : link
I really don’t think the offense or Jones has much of a chance with the OL we have right now. Honestly that’s my take. Solder is starting at right tackle for some reason. He’s god awful. Hernandez sucks. Price sucks. And whoever plays left guard for us also sucks. It’s a disaster.
