speculated for a long time that Garrett was brought on because he had head coaching experience to help a first-time head coach and previous ties to the organization.
Essentially they wanted Judge to have training wheels. Probably shouldn't hire a guy to be HC if you also think he needs training wheels
+1.
A defensive move that maybe was holding JJ back( yes he’s pulled head scratchers, but maybe JG was able to sell him on some things ultimately detrimental to a coach willing to listen to a voice of experience).
Judges first choice was not available. (OC for bills and former NE coach)
I'm sure the Giants/ Mara said hey interveiew this guy if you are looking for an OC. Garrett was on Sabans staff in miami if your looking for a connection.
We are gonna find out how bad he was.
I don't hate Garrett and thought it was a pretty good hire at the time. This offense is fucking terrible, tho. They don't score points. there is more talent then the results indicate. Even with all the injuries etc.

Did you watch DJ his rookie year when he was on pace to break the rookie record for TDs? I already know how bad he is. Shurmur already showed you.

Of course he said that. He's puppet for the organization. He's never done anything priorate this opportunity. He won the lottery with this opportunity (sadly).
Judge will die on the mountain then get a div II college HC job somewhere.
Carl Banks might as well have said the night is dark. Like, no shit Garrett was a Mara hire.
But, is it really such an outlandish idea to bring in a known and trusted person with head coaching experience to hedge against the entirely unknown Joe Judge? This wasn’t a bad idea. Maybe it didn’t work, maybe it did and we just don’t know it yet. Time will tell.
And by the way, Garrett’s failure, which was obvious, is ultimately Joe Judges responsibility. Why, for instance, didn’t Judge do anything apparent to intercede and make adjustments to the league’s most pathetic offense? There’s only two possibilities here, one is that Judge doesn’t have the football acumen to fix the Xs and Os of the offense. The other explanation is that our “CEO type” head coach lacks the management skills to identify and correct a clear quality problem by bringing together and enabling the right team of experts.
And guess what? Either way, we’re fucked. Not because Mara hired Garrett to help Judge, but far more likely because Judge and the dreck Gettleman has assembled are beyond the limited powers of Jason Garrett.
This just makes me think less of Judge to be honest
You've somehow scored a head coaching job with obviously a strong interview and you don't have the balls to negotiate picking your own offensive coordinator?
I feel like you could just repeat John Mara's suggestion back to him aloud to help him realize how stupid an idea it is: "So you think I'm the right man to lead your football team but you want to select my offensive coordinator for me?"

To be honest... He's trying to land his first NFL head coaching job. You try that approach at your next interview and let me know how that goes!

It's an absurd, paradoxical request that no serious head coaching candidate would entertain. Any illusion that Judge interviewed well and conveyed strong vision in spite of a thin resume has evaporated.
It was discussed here on BBI the day Kitchens was promoted
Kitchens is Judge's guy. They are friends. Graham is Judge's guy. They are friends. Garrett was a management pick to have veteran training wheels for a rookie HC. The connections to Giants management are obvious. There was no past connection between Garrett and Judge. There was a huge one between Garrett and ownership.
Definitely true but I don’t blame Judge. If I’m getting hired as the coach of the Giants and my previous role is a special teams coordinator, I basically say yes to whatever the owner wants. At least in that first season anyway.
We called this when his hire was being speculated. Fun memories with loudmouth idiots - ( New Window )

be a great hire unless the board finds out Mara or Gettleman had anything to do with it - then it will be a terrible hire!!
Isn't that the way it goes here? Am I getting warm?
Garrett owed everything in his life to Jerry Jones
Judge had no experience as a either an offensive or defensive coordinator or a head coach. He was a total flyer even as a HC candidate. Even these owners were not dumb enough not to hedge their bets by having someone with HC and playoff experience on the staff.
And what the fuck has Joe Judge shown that anyone would question hedging the bet? He didn't get to hire sufficient numbers of his incompetent asshole buddies? Probably the only thing saving Judge from being shown the door along with Garrett is that it would show the two owners to be the buffoons they are for hiring the guy in the first place.

Talk about a non-controversy.
Agree. Totally reasonable for Mara to want someone in the building to mentor Judge. Says a lot about Garrett that he’d be up for that assignment. Says a lot about Judge that he couldn’t make the relationship work to the end of year.
That thread is a riot. I don't fault people for being positive
of the innuendo and rumors and stories surrounding the Giants lately. I don't want to hear hints anymore. Save it there Carl. Go out there and give us facts. Not stories or rumors or veiled hints. Save me the bullshit.
So many long time NYG players and reporters are afraid to come at Mara so they vent little pockets of steam every now and then but never ever really put themselves out there.
Once a Giant kiss my ass. Start telling the truth or save me the bullshit. This story is nonsense. Stand on a rock and fucking say it. Don't fucking hint at shit like a child.
that caters to their own agenda. Hey that's cool, we all need to find a way to process yet another dark chapter in NYG lore, but it's worthless and tiresome. MAra is in the cross hairs now, again, that's cool, but no one here knows wtf mara is or isn't doing. Yet so many are trying to portray themselves as experts with everything this franchise is doing.
What if Judge pushed for Garrett? That changes everything now doesn't it. What if he didn't? No one knows. This is a HUGE distinction but all we get is theories and gossip. So fucking sick of it. So fucking sick of everything with this team and even the fan base just spitting out shit left and right without a real clue. No one knows a fucking thing. THAT right there should fucking drive us all crazy. All we do is carry out kangaroo courts day after day with little to no intel.
I want to know once and for all how the franchise operates. Who hires the HC? Who hires the OC and DC? Does the HC have full autonomy? Who has final say in shit with NYG? Who the fuck hired Garrett?
We will NEVER know. And that right there is why I can't take any of these so called insiders or reporters seriously. Report on something real. Give us SOMETHING. Enough already. Won't happen. Ever.
as a "suggestion", and Judge followed through. There's no other skullduggery, it just didn't work out mostly because their personnel on offense largely stinks and shows little chemistry, or ability to keep its best players healthy.
of whether Mara pushed for Garrett or not, it's on Judge that he accepted it. He should have known it would be too many cooks in the kitchen.
I get it - he wanted the dream job. Any of us would've done the same, yadda yadda. At the end of the day, the W/L record is on Judge and Gettleman. Judge should've said no to Garrett and stuck to his guns, Mara be damned.
He didn't and here we are when it's possibly already too late to save the job.
of bringing in an experienced HC as a coordinator to help Judge, I just thought Garrett was the worst of possible choices. He had playcalling duties taken away from him not once, but twice in Dallas. With one of the best OL's in the league and a very good RB in DeMarco Murray, 2 years in a row he was last in rush yards and attempts. That is unforgivable.
That thought process played out here. He never seemed to have a plan, but a very ad hoc approach to pay-calling. He wasn't done any favors with a bad OL and little talent at the skill positions, but he did little to help with that. How about giving your WR's a better release by putting them in motion? Or stacking WR's to force DC's to either overload that side of the field or leave one of those WR's in single coverage?
and too many of them not very good at the NFL level are the root of it, I'd wager. Too many voices needing to be assuaged often goes a long way in creating hodge podge, deviation from the central philosophy or just further scrambling the lack of one.

He was a Mara pick and it will most likely get Judge another season or two to show progress.
This franchise may not even be at rock bottom yet which is truly frightening.

Reads like a lot of folks that don’t post too often anymore based on some bad stances...

Id love to see the telephone tracing between JEEERRAHH and Garrett over the years
One might assume the calls continued through his stints with the Giants
Mara was very naive to think he could bring in a Dallas lifer to our camp and expect anything but half hearted performance or treason at worst.
The big question is whether Jason appears at Jerrahhs house for Thanksgiving tomorrow
The performance Garrett gave Monday night was unbelievably bad, emblematic of his entire stay here. He turned Jones into a Zombie
His game plans and play calling were as obvious as the nose on your face
Wheteher he actually tipped his hand to JERRRAAAHH we will never know
I would think the primary mission was render us helpless, not just beat the Giants Vs Cowboys
You may think I'm nuts but there were a lot of tells
especially his rant last week about how great his Oline was in Dallas.
Did you know when Jason was fired as HC in Dallas he refused to leave the building for like 2 weeks? Weird
So out obvious concern moving forward with the continued Mara nepotism is warranted.

Pretty sure the Giants have proven themselves to be fully capable of screwing themselves up over the last decade without a double agent.

I won't miss The Clapper now that he's gone.
I hate this team.
Great we only wasted two years and possibly ruined a QB here.
