Why did Garett take the job in the first place?

simgiant : 11/24/2021 8:39 am
I think this is an interesting part in all of this. And shows the delusions surrounding the giants.
Garett was a long time head coach and had a good amount of success just not in the playoffs. He gets canned but doesn't take time off.
Most likely he is trying to find his way back into a head coaching gig fast.
He sees the state of the giants offence, young QB young great RB and he thinks yeah I'll do well there and build back my chance at being a head coach.
Obviously what he didn't see is that the offensive personnel was just not good enough to perform(and he was not very good either).
My point being it shows people on the staff clearly over evaluate how good the giants are personnel wise for the last 2 years.
Garett coming here was a terrible decision for his career.
He and his wife family are in NJ

I tend agree with your general premise

and just want to add that Jason Garrett was undone by an offensive line that's as bad as it gets in the NFL due to injuries, retirements and Dave Gettleman.
Seemed like a decent gig. The Mara's like him, he is from the

Why shouldn't he have taken the job?

Not getting the OL stabilized has gotten a whole lot of people in the Giant organization fired over the past decade.

and more to come...

You're welcome.

JG's just the most prolific name to get his name sullied.
Because if Judge DID flame out and fail

obviously Garrett would be next in line to be Head Coach comfortable job with the full support of ownership.
A former HC coming here to try to get second shot

Is a good sign not bad. There is much wrong with this team. No need to try to dig up new ways to say they’re dysfunctional.

What was his excuse in Dallas and why did they remove him from play calling duties?

A lotta people are down on his Dallas tenure, but he did have a career record of 85 - 67, which looks pretty damn good to any Giants fan.
It left him with options

Financially he is well off, wife back in home state, he's 55. Mara pays off the contract. Become next HC of Princeton or Rutgers or the Jets. A good life, eh ?
I think coming back to NJ

and working for the Maras had a lot to do with that.

I doubt he would have taken an OC job with the Bengals - just for example.
Once he was fired in Dallas
arniefez : 11/24/2021 10:39 am : link
he had no NFL career anymore. He probably did less with more than any head coach who ever had a 10 year run. The Giant job was probably the only one he was offered.
Maybe he saw the Giants as his quickest route back to HC?

NYG hire a guy who has never even been a coordinator, no less a HC, Garrett was close with the Mara's, maybe he thought if Judge lit himself on fire, Jason Garrett would be the last one standing, and the Mara's would give him the reins to at least finish the season.
He will end up somewhere next year

Yeah, except the Jets part.
Garrett is from the area. My mom went to kindergarten with

Garrett's dad and would see him at high school reunions until his passing. She swears that the Garrett family (Jason's grandparents or great grandparents) used to own the land that Giants stadium is on (at least 80 years ago) and that it was a pig farm. She has a pretty good memory so it might be true.
He loves football
adamg : 11/24/2021 5:37 pm : link
He gets paid a million dollars. He gets to live in NYC. Etc etc. Why would a football person not want the OC job for the Giants?
On paper, this was good for both parties...

Mara had a chance to grab a coach he admired and liked; and Garrett had over a decade of direct experience with a NFCE rival. Further, with new HC who had never been a HC at any level before, Garrett could serve as a mentor in helping Judge navigate his role.

For Garrett, it was an opportunity to reunite with an former team and start to rebuild his reputation as a HC candidate.
I was incredulous that Garrett would take this job

The guy is loaded. Why would he take on a demotion working for a poor franchise? It’s a poor personal career decision and it didn’t work out.
