any surprises?

For me it's the Penguins and Islanders, I expect those two to be reversed (at least in the standings).

Latest Athletic power rankings (top 10):

1. Panthers
2. Hurricanes
3. Maple Leafs
4. Capitals
5. Flames
6. Avs
7. Lightning
8. Bruins
9. Oilers
10. Wild

4 of the top 10 from the Atlantic, 6 from the East. I think he stretched to include MIN over NYR or PIT just to keep it from seeming more lopsided.

other notables:
12. Rangers
13. GKs
18. Devils
23. Islanders
29. Habs
31. Senators

I had such high hopes for this season. The 13-game road trip seemed to take a lot out of the team during the second leg, they looked fatigued. Then, they get the rotten luck of a COVID outbreak as they open the new building ad have been playing a roster that is 40% AHL players. I know there's a long way to go, but they have one heck of a hole to climb out of.

good call. I just don't get it. Are jersey/logo sales a big money maker for USA Hockey?

I can't imagine they'd recoup more than the fee they paid the design firm who did these in sales of this design on a jersey, t-shirt, sweatshirt, etc.

Combination of things.

First is all the players they have lost.
1. Carey Price (rehab)
2. Shea Weber (injury/career probably over)
3. Joel Edmunson (injury)
4. Philip Danault (free agent)
5. Paul Byron (injury)
6. Mike Hoffman (injury)
7. Matthew Perrault (injury)

that's 2 of their top 4 D, and 3 top 6 forwards (that's like taking away a teams's best or second best line - F's and D).

plus, they weren't as good as last year's playoffs, just caught a hot streak and some puck luck.

As much as I like what Trotz has done, this really exposes the limits of his "system." They are incapable of scoring enough when they are outmanned defensively. You just can't rely on winning games in the NHL 2-1 or 3-2. It is like trying to win games in the NFL while scoring less than 20 points per game.

Though the Rangers have been playing real well. The Caps will always hang around and be good, same with the leafs but can you really trust them in the playoffs? Calgary is probably the surprise of the league. Nobody saw them in 1st in the West at the quarter pole. They are really skilled and can fly. The Devils are fast and when we played the Flames it was like were skating in quick sand.

Cautiously optimistic with Devs. They have really shown fight in the 3rd period. They still can struggle at times to score but with no Jack basically the whole season they've hung in there. I know he can be a dirty pos at times but Subban has actually played some of his best hockey as a Devil the past 10 games or so. At the very least if we fall out of it he has resuscitated his trade value. Underated move getting Nate Bastian back from the Kracken on waivers yesterday. He and McLeod were a nice duo on the 4th line last year. That 4th line has been a revolving door of Utica call ups and guys in the dog house this season, this should really stabilize it. Hopefully Sharengovich is out of his slump with 3 goals the past 2 games. A big issue with the Devs for years now are shootouts. We are horrific at them and it costs us that extra point almost every time.

True, in good measure, but leaves out what strides Gauthier seems to be making under this coaching staff after being seemingly just an afterthought for most of his ~20 months with NYR. Blessed with size and speed, he was mostly a non-factor. If a light bulb has gone on, will be significant. Two Québecois teaming up, nice to see.

From what limited looks I've had, they've looked a damn sight stronger than #5. Maybe it's because they have mediocre stretches, yet they've put some whompings on some good teams, not including in that assessment their whompings of NYR who were playing like a crap team...maybe that had something to do with how Flames were undressing them).

As someone who was born in Ukraine and whose parents' first language is Russian and came here in their 30s, I can credibly speak to how weird it is that the guy hasn't learned how to speak English at a passable level in all of these years and needs an interpreter in interviews (not sure if this is still the case).

ColHowPepper : 11/26/2021 9:04 pm : link
may be just comfort level in front of the cameras and not wanting to come off 'illiterate', in a manner of speaking.

From what I see in the PG Q&As, it seems clear Igor understands the questions thrown at him but he continues to have his interpreters translate his responses in Russian. So, not at all farfetched for me to think Panarin, who's been in this country far longer, knew exactly what the rat was saying. I think it's cool this game got under Marchand's skin. I missed the first period+, but I guess Igor kept them close pretty much singlehandedly.

before and of course I hate Marchand more than most on this thread seeing how the Bruins are the Habs main rival (or one of them) and I live here in Boston and hear about Marchand and his antics all the time. I wasn't in any way defending Marchand, it doesn't matter who the player was I expected the league to come down harder.

The $5,000 fine is the maximum allowed by the CBA.

Also, I viewed this the opposite way from some of you, not Panarin getting under Marchand's skin, but the opposite, Marchand getting under Panarin's skin. I expect Marchand to behave this way. No one expects Panarin to.

Anyway, I guess this gives some unique definition to Panarin "dropping the gloves" with Marchand.

Though if I were NYR I'd be on the phone with MTL and see if I can pry Jake Allen free. Perfect backup and veteran presence for Igor, IMO. Won a SC ring (as a backup), can be a legit starter to protect from injury, and solid in the room (so they say).

If they stay healthy and Skinner continues to look good, they may actually have a cup run this year.

Shouldn't be a surprise with Drai and Con but I figured they'd find a way to screw it up.

Breaking News: The #SJSharks will be placing Evander Kane on waivers today for the purpose of sending him to the AHL.

“If” he clears that is, someone may take a chance on him.
Different topic… I’m really starting to believe that Ovie…
tony stg : 11/28/2021 2:07 pm : link
… has a pretty decent shot at reaching Gretzky for all time career goals. A little less than 150 goals to reach him and Ovie doesn’t appear to be slowing at all. Got 18 in 21 games so far. He’s 36 now and I think he’s got another 4 or 5 years left in him. Will be interesting to keep an eye on, for sure.

absolutely does, we talked about it in the other NHL thread.

if he stays healthy he will absolutely break it IMO.

Plus, given the changes to the game, scoring at this pace like Ovi is doing in these conditions makes him a better scorer than Gretzky regardless.

I mentioned this before (I think), I gave him a 30-40% chance of hitting it five years ago. Would give him 65-70% chance now.

He's still 147 back of the even strength number. Maybe a 20-25% chance of hitting that?

Ugh.

Not to turn this into an NYR thread, but Kinkaid deserves the call-up. I wouldn't trade for anyone yet.

I also think NYR twitter is totally overreacting to the Marchand stuff.

not sure how I missed this. and I know I'm biased because I think he was going through some stuff, but Kinkaid is the absolute worst goalie I have seen in an NHL uniform.

He backed up Price in 2019 and he was so bad he was sent to the AHL but he was even worse in the AHL so he was loaned to the Hurricanes AHL team, just to get him out of Laval. I think he may have even been sent to the ECHL (at 29 years old).

NYR need a backup goalie, they have all the makings of a contender and right now they are too reliant on Igor, I'd be aggressive in making a trade for a legit backup option that could carry the team (for small stretches) in case Igor has a short-term injury and IMO that guy is Jake Allen way more than Keith Kinkaid. I do know I wouldn't want to give Kinkaid a shot and then find out he's not the guy, who knows when that will be and what goalie options will be available.

I feel like I can conclude it's not Georgiev.

same. And to be fair Kane is more than grit, he's the closest thing to Tom Wilson outside of Tom Wilson. Kane is a 50-point player and legit option on any line and can play specials (if he's healthy and in shape).

This week. Devs have actually hung in there without him. When he is back they will be really deep down the middle with him, Nico and Mercer. Not to mention McLeod is a solid 4th liner and our best faceoff guy by far. Bastian scored last night. He's such a good fit next to McLeod, gives us some size and grit we were sorely missing. Johnsson-Mercer-Bratt Line on fire. Brat had 3 points last night and 14 in his last 11 games, Johnsson has been everything we hoped we were trading for before last season, 4 points last night. If the Devs were better and higher profile, Dougie Hamilton would be getting some Norris hype. 6 goals and a +7 in 16 games. Had 10 SOG last night. He's amazing for a dman in that the majority of his shots and goals come from between the dots and from the faceoff circles

As a Canes fan I am fine with that. I don't think he will do well in either with the way things are done here in MTL. He hated the press here when he was a player I can only imagine the way he handles them as a GM or coach.

I read that just thought it was conjecture due to relationship and his fluency/nationality but then I read as of this weekend no one had (as of then) reached out to Roy.

As a habs fan and one who has met Roy (in the late 80's when he was still a god in MTL) for sentimental and fan reasons if they go that way I hope it works out, but he is not someone who would be on my short list.

I think a it's slew foot and slew foot doesn't have to be skate to skate, it just means you use your foot or leg as leverage against a player (usually not facing you) to lift them off their skates. it did start as when players would come up behind someone and kick their skates out, but the definition is much broader now. This video linked below is pretty damning. the VAN announcers commentary should be taken with a grain of salt but the slo-mo replay seems pretty damning to me.

Ok, so I learned something new....it's really slew foot/leg lol...

I did think it was when you literally swiped the skate in some manor to up-end your opponent.

Here it is from the USA Hockey rule book
pjcas18 : 11/29/2021 5:08 pm : link
(Note 4) Slew Footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent's feet from under him. This is done by pushing an opponent's upper body backwards with an arm or elbow at the same time using a forward motion of his leg causing the opponent to fall to the ice.

What used to frustrate me is why don't we find out now? I mean players can and do fight every game why doesn't Marchand get called out or retaliated against more often?

and then i watched games more closely, he's a tough SOB, he does get it all game some games. Almost like Crosby.

He is also elusive, something that always took me a long time to learn, it's hard to square up against a smaller player- their center of gravity is lower and they are usually more agile.

I do think he's a scum bag, but in the old days a player who scores 80 - 100 points a season had someone do their dirty work for them. today Marchand does it himself.

Not defending him even a little, but I guess in a way saying he does get called out a lot and doesn't usually back down (not fighting per se, but with the physical play).

pjcas18 : 11/29/2021 7:57 pm : link
but a suspension isn't like high sticking where intent is irrelevant, I think you need to be able to ascertain intent for a suspension.

On the Blais injury it looks coincidental, not intentional. You can even make a case Blais was as much a cause for the two players skates colliding as Subban.

but it's a judgment call, and I don't think Subban deserves benefit of the doubt but he also maybe doesn't have the same reputation as Marchand. Not sure.

Random sure, but sure doesn't make sense.

The first 2 PK could and probably should have been suspended. He didn't "end Blaise season" that was a freak play by the boards where their skates came together awkwardly. Nothing remotely close to a slew foot. It's not about the benefit of the doubt. Flat out there was no intent on that play. Any neutral person would see it that way.

Marchand most reminds me of Ken Linseman, the Rat. Linseman was also a very talented player who was a sneaky, dirty piece of shit. Hence, the Rat nickname.

Yeah great comparison. He was one of the fastest skaters in the league, but what a dirty piece of shit.

He's been practicing since late last week he's returning tonight vs SJ. Love getting this done quick. You knew it was just a formality once they drafted Luke who by the way is tearing it up at Michigan with highlight real plays. Devs are set up well. They have the space to leave lock up their young guys. They won't be big players on the UFA market but they've already struck there getting their franchise dman in Dougie.

We all assumed this would happen but I am so relieved that it’s done because it’s not the most desirable location. Now the Devils can turn their attention towards Bratt and Zacha’s extensions.

The devils would be wise to stay out of the free agent market as they also have extensions coming up in the near future for Mercer and Smith.

Not sure it's progressed that far yet.

I don't think they're going to give him away, but he's been disappointing so far, so who knows how he's valued. You can say he peaked as a rookie (for now).

And predicting trade value is something I am terrible at.

I read CAR in the mix too. Is there a trade mentioned where they are not in the mix?

Source No. 2: “(Boston’s) not going to retain salary. So a full-salaried player and a diminishing asset, maybe a mid-round pick plus a contract.”

Source No. 3: “There will be significant interest. Difficult trade to make, though — high risk on both sides given the player’s potential versus his contract.”

Source No. 4: “Whatever the market will bear. Interesting scenario. Might have to wait for (Brad Marchand) to return. (Anton) Blidh questionable?”

In other words, anything could happen....

Would be interesting. The situation in Arizona is such a mess, Starting with new ownership in a new city could be good. Not crazy about another sun belt team, would rather see Quebec get a team but Houston has always been a good minor league hockey town and hockey has definitely worked out in Dallas.

One of the best hockey games I have ever seen live was Game 6 Adams division 1st round Hartford vs Boston in the mall April 1990.

Whalers were stacked: Francis, Dineen, Ferraro, little ball of hate (Verbeek), Ulf, etc.

Bruins had their stars obviously: Bourque, Neely, Wesley, etc.

Game was intense, some of the best hockey I've seen, it went into OT there was so many fights in the stands matching the on ice intensity. Whalers eventually won to force a game 7 back in Boston.

I was a fan of neither team so less stressful for me, but what an atmosphere and what a game.

Sure is, Ruff continues to make some boneheaded lineup decisions and once again played Mason Geersten over Kuokkanen and Boqvist. He kept Hughes at wing with Nico and Zacha again after it was a huge failure the game before.

Ty Smith is really struggling and he could use some time in Utica. Let Colton White play in his place for a couple of weeks until he turns it around.

And why the hell hasn't Mark Recchi been fired yet? The pathetic powerplay is now 0-18 in the past 7 games.

The Devils with their third terrible performance in a row. The goaltending has struggled mightily the past few games. If this continues I would like to see them give a chance to Akira Schmid.

21year old Schmid probably isn't ready but he has been the best goaltender in the AHL this season with an 8-0 record and a 1.24 GAA and .956 save %. The year before Schmid burst onto the prospect list when he was the best goaltender in the USHL.

They had run out of gas the last 2 games of the trip (Tampa & Florida) and then had a bunch of games w half of an AHL roster. Nelson, Pulock and Czikas are still out, but every team deals with injuries. Problem with the Isles is, they used older vets as a stop gap, and the age is getting expose (Parise, Chara etc) and they can't score to save their lives

I think Sway has played pretty good, except for a few softies he's left in.

Really think the Bruins overplayed it by signing Ullmark. I know they wanted a vet presence and potential #1, but I think 5 years is just too much.

Rask and Swayman would make a nice duo for second half in 2022 but what would they do w/ Ullmark?

MTL dominated the Lightning

for 58 minutes, then gave up 2 goals so they didn't even get the loser point.

I'd say it was on purpose to tank for Wright, but we all know tanking doesn't result in the top pick anymore and MTL is so bad it didn't need to be on purpose.

Things are escalating between veteran NHL executive, Jim Rutherford and the Vancouver Canucks. A deal is expected to get done, although sources won’t confirm if it’s for the presidents role or both president and GM.

Not sure, probably COVID. I read that there is a threshold of canceled games, where if the NHL reaches it then they would rescind players going to the Olympics.

Not sure what the threshold is.

I was reading that if a player tests positive, even if they are fully vaccinated and boosted, they must quarantine in China for 3 (!) weeks, so it's possible that they would miss NHL games after the Olympics if they are stuck in China quarantining. I wouldn't want to go either, honestly.

When I heard that it was his hip I immediately thought of Cory Schneider. Hopefully it’s not as severe as that. I am excited to see Amira Schmid play. I was at the game last night. The power play is even more embarrassing in person. I can’t believe Recchi still has a job, it blows my mind.

Geersten continuing to play is further indication that Ruff should not be a HC in todays NHL. This isn’t the 90’s or early 2000’s anymore.

Jay on the Island : 12/12/2021 10:21 am : link
I don’t know what is going on with Ty Smith. He looks like a completely different player from last season. He needs time in the AHL I think. The Devils should promote Colton White, Reilly Walsh, or Nikita Okhotiuk to replace him.

Secondly I was very excited to see Schmid but I don’t think he’s ready for the NHL. The devils season is like over now with Nico and Graves on the COVID list so they can afford to keep Schmid in the NHL.

As for Schmid, I hope that I am wrong but I don’t think that he will ever be a full time starter in the NHL. He has great size but he lacks the quickness and athleticism that Blackwood and Nico Daws have.

I understand your concern but if Bratt keeps playing like this he’s worth 6x6. The Devils do have a lot of cap room tied to Nico, Hughes, and Hamilton but Subban is coming off the books after this season plus Bernier will be off next year which is over $13 million in cap room.

The contract I am most concerned about is Miles Wood. He’s a restricted free agent and the Devils need to be careful not to pay a 4th line player $3-4 million per season. That’s how they will get in trouble with the cap. Fill the 4th line with prospects or Vesey types for the league minimum.

So Capitals lose Kuznetsov (COVID protocol) as they're about to get Nicklas Backstrom back from hip injury.

Nic Dowd and Trevor van Riemsdyk expected to return from protocol tonight.

Kuznetsov was in COVID protocol twice last season and confirmed he tested positive both times.

I really think we're going to get a week or two shutdown. I'm surprised we haven't gone in that direction.

Anecdotally, I've heard more people testing positive this past week than I have this entire pandemic, lol (added context: I have no friends, so limited sample size).

Agree. I tested positive the day before Thanksgiving. My wife too.

We came back from a hockey tournament with my youngest in Jay Peak, VT the weekend before Thanksgiving and there was an outbreak.

20-something out of 57 people in our group (players, coaches, family members) tested positive. We had a two week shut down.

and since then a ton of people we know have tested positive.

3rd round pick from 2019, Mattias Norlinder, made the team out of camp but recently was sent to Laval (AHL) to work on things on the NA ice which was new to him this year. He flashed but he wasn't ready for the NHL.

He asked the Canadiens to loan him back to Frolunda in the SHL (Sweden).

He just wanted to go home, he's 21 years old, and isn't ready for the NHL.

It happens more often than we know about.

What does that tell you? It's gotten really rough on Devs world. I like a lot of what Fitz has done as GM, but man did he screw the pooch with that Ruff hire with Gallant out there. Now maybe Gallant wasn't interested, who knows. However there was literally nobody in hockey clamoring t ok hire Ruff as a HC. I don't even know where they go from here. They are something like 3-14-3 in their last 20 games, with 2 of their wins coming vs Philly. Honestly I doubt a coaching change will even do much unless they get some great guy in here. I don't wanna see either of the 2 asst clowns- Rechi or Naserdine promoted. Tough to do a complete bench sweep mid season. Who.knows where they go but something has to change.

I am absolutely disgusted by the performance of the team especially Ruff and his assistants. Recchi and Nasreddine should have been fired after last season. Ruff continues to play useless players like Mason Geersten as if it were still the 90's. They have to fire him ASAP. Boudreau would have been a great fit for this team.

I am hoping that the Devils let Ruff go after today's game because I will not watch much more of this.
