good call. I just don't get it. Are jersey/logo sales a big money maker for USA Hockey?

plus, they weren't as good as last year's playoffs, just caught a hot streak and some puck luck.
As much as I like what Trotz has done, this really exposes the limits of his "system." They are incapable of scoring enough when they are outmanned defensively. You just can't rely on winning games in the NHL 2-1 or 3-2. It is like trying to win games in the NFL while scoring less than 20 points per game.

Panarin said take that LOL
Cautiously optimistic with Devs. They have really shown fight in the 3rd period. They still can struggle at times to score but with no Jack basically the whole season they've hung in there. I know he can be a dirty pos at times but Subban has actually played some of his best hockey as a Devil the past 10 games or so. At the very least if we fall out of it he has resuscitated his trade value. Underated move getting Nate Bastian back from the Kracken on waivers yesterday. He and McLeod were a nice duo on the 4th line last year. That 4th line has been a revolving door of Utica call ups and guys in the dog house this season, this should really stabilize it. Hopefully Sharengovich is out of his slump with 3 goals the past 2 games. A big issue with the Devs for years now are shootouts. We are horrific at them and it costs us that extra point almost every time.

He's actually fluent in English, but he's more comfortable talking through a translator. He hardly ever does his pressers in English.
This was two months ago.
doesn't matter anyway what Marchand said (unless it was something racist to Miller or Reaves which would be handled differently), throwing equipment into the other teams bench is something I'm not sure there is an official discipline policy for, will be interesting to see how it's handled.
I don't think MTL booed him, at least not most people. he was beloved there before the trade.

As someone who was born in Ukraine and whose parents' first language is Russian and came here in their 30s, I can credibly speak to how weird it is that the guy hasn't learned how to speak English at a passable level in all of these years and needs an interpreter in interviews (not sure if this is still the case).
From what I see in the PG Q&As, it seems clear Igor understands the questions thrown at him but he continues to have his interpreters translate his responses in Russian. So, not at all farfetched for me to think Panarin, who's been in this country far longer, knew exactly what the rat was saying. I think it's cool this game got under Marchand's skin. I missed the first period+, but I guess Igor kept them close pretty much singlehandedly.

Perfect response…fuck ratface and his BS
Not quite up to par with Henrik spraying Crosby with the water bottle…but I generally enjoyed watching the glove catch Marchand in the chops
'Player Safety' has got their backs.
Never mind the no call on Pageau
The $5,000 fine is the maximum allowed by the CBA.
Also, I viewed this the opposite way from some of you, not Panarin getting under Marchand's skin, but the opposite, Marchand getting under Panarin's skin. I expect Marchand to behave this way. No one expects Panarin to.
Anyway, I guess this gives some unique definition to Panarin "dropping the gloves" with Marchand.
How the mighty have fallen.
May be good as a NYR backup if Allaire can fix him.
Though if I were NYR I'd be on the phone with MTL and see if I can pry Jake Allen free. Perfect backup and veteran presence for Igor, IMO. Won a SC ring (as a backup), can be a legit starter to protect from injury, and solid in the room (so they say).

Ugh.
Not to turn this into an NYR thread, but Kinkaid deserves the call-up. I wouldn't trade for anyone yet.
I also think NYR twitter is totally overreacting to the Marchand stuff.
If they stay healthy and Skinner continues to look good, they may actually have a cup run this year.
Shouldn't be a surprise with Drai and Con but I figured they'd find a way to screw it up.
Very interested to see if Broberg is ready to stick and if Skinner can hold a spot between the iron.

Rasputin, was curious as to your focus on Oilers, went to your bio, don't think I'd ever looked before--cool info. Because of your 'Montreal raised' and your 'lawyer for the stars' (borrowing liberally lol), you might get a kick out of Netflix's 'Call My Agent' ('10 Pour Cent'), light, goofy, stuff with French film starts playing themselves in episodes that build their plots around them. To the extent your first para was directed to me, you'll note I said the 'game' got under Marchand's skin, not Panarin. If Boston's winning, he doesn't have to whine. Btw, pj, are you actually living in Beantown now, as opposed to an hour or so away roughly Worcester?
I live in between Worcester and Boston, almost exactly halfway between them. When I moved up here I lived in Newton, a Boston suburb where BC is, once we were going to expand our family we moved out to the more affordable suburbs.

Hearing that Scott Mellanby had extensive talks with Habs owner Geoff Molson at first about becoming GM, then that changed to perhaps becoming president of hockey operations. But he was told yesterday he was out of the running. So he resigned today.
Some rumors about Patrick Roy in the GM role. I feel like that would be a disaster, and only being mentioned because he's a Franco.
- Panarin should have been fined $10,000: the $5,000 max for his misconduct throwing his glove at Rat (and props to pj for the 'dropping the gloves' comment); and a 2nd $5,000 for butt ugly style points in his throwing motion, looking like when many of us were kids and girls didn't play/weren't coached in sports thus to say, eww, he throws like a girl.
I don't think he'd go ahead of Lafreniere in a redraft or anything like that (yet), but man he can put the puck in the net.

Breaking News: The #SJSharks will be placing Evander Kane on waivers today for the purpose of sending him to the AHL.
“If” he clears that is, someone may take a chance on him.
absolutely does, we talked about it in the other NHL thread.
if he stays healthy he will absolutely break it IMO.
Plus, given the changes to the game, scoring at this pace like Ovi is doing in these conditions makes him a better scorer than Gretzky regardless.
I mentioned this before (I think), I gave him a 30-40% chance of hitting it five years ago. Would give him 65-70% chance now.
He's still 147 back of the even strength number. Maybe a 20-25% chance of hitting that?
Assistant GM Trevor Timmins and Paul Wilson, senior vice-president of communications, have also been let go.
Big moves in Montreal.

not sure how I missed this. and I know I'm biased because I think he was going through some stuff, but Kinkaid is the absolute worst goalie I have seen in an NHL uniform.
He backed up Price in 2019 and he was so bad he was sent to the AHL but he was even worse in the AHL so he was loaned to the Hurricanes AHL team, just to get him out of Laval. I think he may have even been sent to the ECHL (at 29 years old).
NYR need a backup goalie, they have all the makings of a contender and right now they are too reliant on Igor, I'd be aggressive in making a trade for a legit backup option that could carry the team (for small stretches) in case Igor has a short-term injury and IMO that guy is Jake Allen way more than Keith Kinkaid. I do know I wouldn't want to give Kinkaid a shot and then find out he's not the guy, who knows when that will be and what goalie options will be available.
I feel like I can conclude it's not Georgiev.
Georgiev is just awful. I'd rather try something different.

I think a it's slew foot and slew foot doesn't have to be skate to skate, it just means you use your foot or leg as leverage against a player (usually not facing you) to lift them off their skates. it did start as when players would come up behind someone and kick their skates out, but the definition is much broader now. This video linked below is pretty damning. the VAN announcers commentary should be taken with a grain of salt but the slo-mo replay seems pretty damning to me.

Spoke with Rick Valette today, agent for Jake DeBrusk, he confirmed he asked for a trade over the weekend. It's felt a change of scenery moving forward would be beneficial. Debrusk will remain with the team while the Bruins try and facilitate the request.
What used to frustrate me is why don't we find out now? I mean players can and do fight every game why doesn't Marchand get called out or retaliated against more often?
and then i watched games more closely, he's a tough SOB, he does get it all game some games. Almost like Crosby.
He is also elusive, something that always took me a long time to learn, it's hard to square up against a smaller player- their center of gravity is lower and they are usually more agile.
I do think he's a scum bag, but in the old days a player who scores 80 - 100 points a season had someone do their dirty work for them. today Marchand does it himself.
Not defending him even a little, but I guess in a way saying he does get called out a lot and doesn't usually back down (not fighting per se, but with the physical play).

Sure, random, but hasn't Subban had like three of these incidents including ending a player's season?
Random sure, but sure doesn't make sense.
On the Blais injury it looks coincidental, not intentional. You can even make a case Blais was as much a cause for the two players skates colliding as Subban.
but it's a judgment call, and I don't think Subban deserves benefit of the doubt but he also maybe doesn't have the same reputation as Marchand. Not sure.

The first 2 PK could and probably should have been suspended. He didn't "end Blaise season" that was a freak play by the boards where their skates came together awkwardly. Nothing remotely close to a slew foot. It's not about the benefit of the doubt. Flat out there was no intent on that play. Any neutral person would see it that way.

We all assumed this would happen but I am so relieved that it’s done because it’s not the most desirable location. Now the Devils can turn their attention towards Bratt and Zacha’s extensions.
The devils would be wise to stay out of the free agent market as they also have extensions coming up in the near future for Mercer and Smith.

Not sure it's progressed that far yet.
I don't think they're going to give him away, but he's been disappointing so far, so who knows how he's valued. You can say he peaked as a rookie (for now).
And predicting trade value is something I am terrible at.
I read CAR in the mix too. Is there a trade mentioned where they are not in the mix?
basically it nets down to (who know?)
Source No. 1: “I would think it’s more of a similar player needing or wanting a new environment.”
Source No. 2: “(Boston’s) not going to retain salary. So a full-salaried player and a diminishing asset, maybe a mid-round pick plus a contract.”
Source No. 3: “There will be significant interest. Difficult trade to make, though — high risk on both sides given the player’s potential versus his contract.”
Source No. 4: “Whatever the market will bear. Interesting scenario. Might have to wait for (Brad Marchand) to return. (Anton) Blidh questionable?”
In other words, anything could happen....

Would be interesting. The situation in Arizona is such a mess, Starting with new ownership in a new city could be good. Not crazy about another sun belt team, would rather see Quebec get a team but Houston has always been a good minor league hockey town and hockey has definitely worked out in Dallas.
Ahhh brings back memories of the trips up to the "mall" to see a few Whalers-Devs/Rangers/Bruins games with my buddies in high school. Great atmosphere for hockey on those days when the place was full.

One of the best hockey games I have ever seen live was Game 6 Adams division 1st round Hartford vs Boston in the mall April 1990.
Whalers were stacked: Francis, Dineen, Ferraro, little ball of hate (Verbeek), Ulf, etc.
Bruins had their stars obviously: Bourque, Neely, Wesley, etc.
Game was intense, some of the best hockey I've seen, it went into OT there was so many fights in the stands matching the on ice intensity. Whalers eventually won to force a game 7 back in Boston.
I was a fan of neither team so less stressful for me, but what an atmosphere and what a game.
I would love to see the Whalers return but I am convinced that it will never happen.

Makes sense IMO and Kravtsov's juniors teammate Alexander Romanov in MTL now - so maybe some comfort there.
Sure is, Ruff continues to make some boneheaded lineup decisions and once again played Mason Geersten over Kuokkanen and Boqvist. He kept Hughes at wing with Nico and Zacha again after it was a huge failure the game before.
Ty Smith is really struggling and he could use some time in Utica. Let Colton White play in his place for a couple of weeks until he turns it around.
And why the hell hasn't Mark Recchi been fired yet? The pathetic powerplay is now 0-18 in the past 7 games.
it's amazing, that's it, 3 weeks and BUF wouldn't allow him to have this surgery. of course he still has a long road back, with rehab, etc. and he's obviously non-contact, but point stands IMO.

Jay at least the penalty killing has improved, but yeah the PP is a joke. It's been basically league worst for going on 2 seasons and yet Mark Recchi has the best job security in North America. I agree Hughes on the wing and with Nico is flat out bizarre.

The Devils with their third terrible performance in a row. The goaltending has struggled mightily the past few games. If this continues I would like to see them give a chance to Akira Schmid.
21year old Schmid probably isn't ready but he has been the best goaltender in the AHL this season with an 8-0 record and a 1.24 GAA and .956 save %. The year before Schmid burst onto the prospect list when he was the best goaltender in the USHL.

They had run out of gas the last 2 games of the trip (Tampa & Florida) and then had a bunch of games w half of an AHL roster. Nelson, Pulock and Czikas are still out, but every team deals with injuries. Problem with the Isles is, they used older vets as a stop gap, and the age is getting expose (Parise, Chara etc) and they can't score to save their lives

I think Sway has played pretty good, except for a few softies he's left in.
Really think the Bruins overplayed it by signing Ullmark. I know they wanted a vet presence and potential #1, but I think 5 years is just too much.
Rask and Swayman would make a nice duo for second half in 2022 but what would they do w/ Ullmark?
I think the Rangers would need a C if they deal Strome.
Otherwise it bumps Chytil up to 2C, which he's not ideally suited for, and leaves no 3C.
In other goalie news, Ben Bishop takes next step in return to the ice. Maybe a Stars goalie is what the Rangers should pursue. Khudobin, Holtby, Oettinger and Bishop....none long-term or expensive (relatively speaking).
I'm sure any deals they're looking into will have them trying to build a package around Kravtsov.

To be fair, you were missing hischier, Graves and a goalie, yet made it mostly a game. You guys have pieces to look forward to
I was at the game last night. The power play is even more embarrassing in person. I can’t believe Recchi still has a job, it blows my mind.
Geersten continuing to play is further indication that Ruff should not be a HC in todays NHL. This isn’t the 90’s or early 2000’s anymore.
I thought TBL was nuts letting him go for Vasilevskiy, but obviously that was the right move, but I still expected Bishop to be great, but he never really was after TBL and now he's retiring at 35.
Secondly I was very excited to see Schmid but I don’t think he’s ready for the NHL. The devils season is like over now with Nico and Graves on the COVID list so they can afford to keep Schmid in the NHL.
As for Schmid, I hope that I am wrong but I don’t think that he will ever be a full time starter in the NHL. He has great size but he lacks the quickness and athleticism that Blackwood and Nico Daws have.

I understand your concern but if Bratt keeps playing like this he’s worth 6x6. The Devils do have a lot of cap room tied to Nico, Hughes, and Hamilton but Subban is coming off the books after this season plus Bernier will be off next year which is over $13 million in cap room.
The contract I am most concerned about is Miles Wood. He’s a restricted free agent and the Devils need to be careful not to pay a 4th line player $3-4 million per season. That’s how they will get in trouble with the cap. Fill the 4th line with prospects or Vesey types for the league minimum.

Things keep changing rapidly, but as of this very minute, the NHL still doesn't plan to pause the entire league.... Like I said, as of this very minute...

Expect more NHL postponements to be announced today. A league-wide pause feels inevitable but for now sense is the NHL/NHLPA will try to power through next few days if possible with case by case approach still…

The Bruins are testing this morning and then depending on results will await league guidance on whether they’re flying to Ottawa for Sunday’s game.

Nothing would change for Devs fans. The Devs have already taken the last month off.

Just take a few weeks off at this point.

I am absolutely disgusted by the performance of the team especially Ruff and his assistants. Recchi and Nasreddine should have been fired after last season. Ruff continues to play useless players like Mason Geersten as if it were still the 90's. They have to fire him ASAP. Boudreau would have been a great fit for this team.
I am hoping that the Devils let Ruff go after today's game because I will not watch much more of this.
I think the tournament will still go on, all the teams are already there as are the staff and they have some tight protocols.
