You and I are roughly the same age and have been watching for roughly the same time. This isn't the worst team I can remember — some of those 70s teams were pretty freakin' awful — but it's in the conversation. And certainly this stretch over the last 5 years is similar to the 70s. Not just bad on the field but inept from the owner's office down.
Some of the younger fans had a lot of affection for Wellington Mara. I didn't because I remembered the 70s. John Mara is in the same situation. If he's smart, he'll step back and let someone be his George Young, and run the football operation, so he can become the beloved patriarch.
I see no indication that he is that smart, though.
The mid-70s indeed sucked worse than this, but Arns did develope a defense and by 1976 there was at least a defense that could, not always, keep the game close. I always went and many times the game was within reach but the offense sucked. Remember the discord between the offense and defense back then?
The biggest issues for the Giants are the Oline and the lack of consistent pass rush....they dominate everything the Giants are attempting to do.
