Xavier McKinney is quickly turning into a Star

JoeyBigBlue : 11/28/2021 11:17 pm
It really seems like the game is slowing down for him, and he’s really showing his talents out there. It seems like he’s developing into a ball hawking Free Safety. I’m really excited for this kid’s future.
I really like the combo

Agreed I don't think Love gets enough... well... Love on this site. Seriously.
Agree
Scuzzlebutt : 11/28/2021 11:22 pm : link
Earlier in the season I was a little disappointed that he didn’t seem to be living up to his draft status, but the last several weeks he seems to have turned a corner. Happy to be proven wrong.
I know we have coaches to coach
Giantimistic : 11/28/2021 11:26 pm : link
but I think Logan Ryan has made a huge impact on our safeties.

Big fan of the McKinney and Love combo. Versatility, ball skills, and coverage ability.

Love is the most underrated player on this roster
I agree, he has a WRs knack for the ball
sb from NYT Forum : 11/28/2021 11:45 pm : link
. Actually the young DBs played really great today, overall.
he's becoming more comfortable...
BillKo : 11/28/2021 11:47 pm : link
..and thus more aggressive.

Running thru the WR over the middle on the next to last play where he almost picked off Hurts a second time is a clear sign of this.

Good call. I know he didn't catch the INT but that's the type of play that shows it's coming together for him.
I see McKinney anticipating...
EricJ : 11/29/2021 8:10 am : link
and using his instincts vs reacting after the WR has caught the ball. I just hope the coaches continue to allow him to do that.
He is flying to the ball
nygiants16 : 11/29/2021 8:14 am : link
he is not thinking and just playing, trusting his instincts..

a pairing of him and Kyle Hamilton from ND would be a good combo
yes, he's a player for sure
Victor in CT : 11/29/2021 8:24 am : link
he flashed last year when he came back late in the season and he's really coming on now.
He is going to be a multiple INT
rebel yell : 11/29/2021 8:27 am : link
guy for years to come. Great instincts and nose for the ball. He's showing great potential.
Would like to see him get several picks off his ex teammate

Next week.
McKinney has been a pleasant surprise
Simms11 : 11/29/2021 9:04 am : link
and we haven’t had a good Free Safety in quite a few years. Love has also improved which I LOVE to see!
McKinney has been looking more and more comfortable
chick310 : 11/29/2021 9:14 am : link
which is nice since he is one of the few younger guys we see actually developing. Not at a criticism but he could have potentially come down with 3 interceptions yesterday.

He is good support for corners and he is getting his hands on balls that are being put in harm's way. Clean up the tackling a little more and trust his speed and you are looking at an asset at Safety.
I'm not sure about
mittenedman : 11/29/2021 9:18 am : link
"star" but he's looking like a solid starter, at worst.

I'm still not sure how he dropped that INT though. Should've cost them the game.
Giants have had
JB_in_DC : 11/29/2021 9:45 am : link
a couple big takeaway seasons from Safeties this decade - Stevie Brown with 7 in 2012 and Collins with 6 during his all pro year in 2016. But neither of those were natural ballhawks defending the pass in the way McKinney appears to be. Exciting player.
McKinney
pjcas18 : 11/29/2021 9:45 am : link
highest rated safety this week per PFF (FWIW)
Hes going
armstead98 : 11/29/2021 9:49 am : link
To make QBs think twice about taking deep shots.
Who picked this guy? What round?
Ivan15 : 11/29/2021 10:03 am : link
.
I think we can kiss Peppers
Dnew15 : 11/29/2021 10:06 am : link
goodbye and now Logan Ryan has become an expensive third safety.
He's been a very pleasant surprise
Greg from LI : 11/29/2021 10:11 am : link
I liked him a lot at Bama so I was really disappointed with his early season play. Glad he's really turned things around.
Agreed McKinney is becoming a star
Matt M. : 11/29/2021 10:17 am : link
He is turning into the S we have been trying to locate for several years.

I think equally as important the last couple of weeks we have also seen Love elevate his level of play. He still has some flaws; he's missed a few tackles the last couple of weeks with poor angles. But he tends to be around the ball and makes plays. The end of last year I thought his forced play back at his more natural CB position was going to yield us a CB. But, the Giants had other ideas. Now, I like the idea of Love and McKinney starting moving forward with Ryan as the 3rd S (like Grant from a few years back). Peppers can walk.
McKinney is 22.
Beezer : 11/29/2021 10:17 am : link
Love is 23.

Those are really good numbers.
he's gotten a lot of reps
djm : 11/29/2021 10:20 am : link
this second season. Makes a big difference.

along with Adoree Jackson 26
James Bradberry 28
Darnay Holmes 23
Aaron Robinson 23

Solid young core for the DB.
Yesterday, we saw what consistent pressure can do for a secondary
Matt M. : 11/29/2021 10:25 am : link
They have a good core of DBs, but the lack of pressure has meant inconsistent play from them, even with all the talent. To me, a dominant OLB is a must in the draft. However, I specifically say OLB and not EDGE. Why? Because our current D doesn't just have issues rushing the passer, but also setting the edge in the run game. We need a closer to complete OLB, even if the emphasis is on the rush game.

I feel like Ojulari and Roche give us a nice base, but we need 1 dominant player there.
Is there any correlation to Peppers getting hurt
GiantTuff1 : 11/29/2021 10:37 am : link
and McKinney suddenly shining?
He's been playing great, but
Bill in UT : 11/29/2021 10:43 am : link
Stevie Brown looked great with all the interceptions, too. You really have be sit down with the film and watch him on all the other plays before we declare him a star. I sure hope he becomes one. It would be nice for Engram to have a roommate at the Pro-Bowl.

Brown did nothing else well besides catching some bad passes. HMcKinney is actually making plays all around. He is starting to make plays near the LOS in the run game. He is defending passes. He is taking good drops and angles and reads to prevent some passes altogether. And, he is making big plays. There really is not a comparison between McKinney and Brown.

Lol, I can’t tell if this is a joke or you really can’t tell the difference between the two?

I know it would be luxury and the lines need to be fixed but could you imagine if Kyle Hamilton is there during our first pick? I would really be all for drafting him if Neal and Hutchinson are gone. With peppers likely gone and Logan Ryan getting up there I would be for it. Def need pass rush but we should stay ahead in keeping our secondary which is a strength to stay that way.
