NFT: Knicks chat: Tough week ahead

nygiants16 : 11/29/2021 11:27 am
Knicks had a great win saturday, undermanned and went in and beat a hot Atlanta team in their building..

This week doesnt get any easier @nets tuesday TNT, home Bulls on thursday and home nuggets saturday..

Basically 3 home games, Knicks have played the Bulls tough and Nuggets are struggling have no bench..

As for thr starters i think i stick with Kemba but with this caveat: you tell him be agressive, get into the paint, if doubled dish, if he is playing well you let him go, if not take him out, short leash..

It was easier to do but i liked the mkxing matching against atlanta, it allowed different guys to get into a rythym, instead of 5 starters and 5 bench...Mixing and matching allowed Fournier, Burks, Quick, Rj and Toppin all get into the flow of the game..

Reiterates how some of the depth needs to be consolidated

getting back surgery. Out indefinitely.

They really need to figure out a way to get Toppin more minutes
Mike in NJ : 11/29/2021 11:45 am : link
His per 36 numbers at this point are 19-8 and he has played really well defensively, especially considering that was supposed to be an area of weakness coming in. He's been playing too well to only be getting 15 minutes per night, I would love to see them figure out a way to get him 5-10 minutes at Center on a consistent basis.

Thibs needs to split up Randle/RJs minutes. I know its unavoidable that they are going to share the court together, but he needs to do a better job of staggering them. It worked last year because RJ was hitting 3s at a much higher rate, but this year they just do not look like they can play together. They just take turns trying to get theirs, and there is very little ball movement. RJ looked really good with the second unit against Atlanta, let's see more of that.

Said the same thing the other week. Thibs needs to stagger the starters.

It’s not good. His back injury was the reason he fell in the draft if I remember correctly.
The Atlanta win has me feeling more positive about this team.
bceagle05 : 11/29/2021 11:54 am : link
Not just beating a good team on the road, but 11-9 just feels a lot better than 10-10 through 20 games. Puts us on a 45-win pace, which is where we should be. Win or lose in Brooklyn (most likely lose but we'll see), I think we're going to start to play better in the second quarter of the season.

The front office is probably realizing by now they should've trusted the young guys more. The minutes going to Kemba, Fournier and Noel could've gone to IQ, Grimes, Obi, Sims, etc., without sacrificing much of anything, but I suppose they wanted some insurance. We have two vets at every spot - Rose/Kemba at the point, Fournier/Burks on the wing, Noel/Taj at the five - where they could've gotten away with just one. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to consolidate at some point.

His 3rd back surgery. Nuggets just gave him HUGE money too.
IQ
Existenz : 11/29/2021 11:56 am : link
If IQ keeps playing the way he has, I think you have to start thinking about inserting him in the starting lineup at PG. He's played great defense against two top tier PGs the last two games and he has been facilitating the offense.

Wow, and Kemba is out of the rotation. That was the move to make, as much as we all wanted a happier Kemba/NYC reunion. Welcome to the rotation, Quentin Grimes.

Burks/Rose
Fournier/IQ
RJ/Grimes
Randle/Obi

Oh, so Grimes isn't a fixture just yet.

I really thought he had one more all star season in him and coming back to NY would rejuvinate him..

But we saw the difference immediately with Burks at point, team is bigger, better defensively..

but I still feel like anyone associated with the Knox pick should’ve been fired long ago. Mikal, Miles and SGA are all far superior players who could’ve filled the gaping holes we still have at 3&D wing and starting PG - the Knox pick destroyed us. If you miss that badly it should cost you your job.

Would have preferred IQ to start at the point, but Burks has been playing great. And IQ will get his minutes and dominate those second units. Can't argue against this move. Kemba just wasn't bringing much to the table. Need some type of boost for the starters. Burks could be that.

A statistical summary of why the Knicks are pulling Kemba Walker from the rotation:

Knicks have the best defense in the league when he’s on the bench (99.0 DRtg) & are dead last (116.3 DRtg) when he’s on the floor.

They are 27th in offense with him playing, 9th with him off.

I think what we've found out through 20 games
Stu11 : 11/29/2021 3:16 pm : link
Is that having Randle AND a PG who thrives with the ball in his hands simply doesn't work. Factor in Kemba's horrific D and it's turned the 1st unit into a mess. I think what this may show is if we get a ball dominant star (Dame) Randle will have to go.

I think whoever the next point guard is has to play defense and be able to effect the game passing and shooting..

When Kemba was shooting well from 3 for that short stretch the Knicks were playing well offensively..

The reason it works with Burks or IQ or Rose with Randle is becaise they are effective off the ball, kemba wasnt..

Lillard for example would probably welcome playing with randle
I'd concede that it might work with Dame
Stu11 : 11/29/2021 3:25 pm : link
Because has the gravitas to come here and be himself and not defer right away. I agree Burks is a much better fit with the first unit as well as next to Rose. I do think Kemba isn't finished here by a long shot, though if a star becomes available in the next few months I could see him going as part of the package.

actually i have consistenly said that it would be hard to bench Kemba because then he is completely out of the rotation and i didnt think the Knicks would do that..

I also said that i would put Burks into the starting lineup if a change was madr, i said it multiple times saturday before the game that i would start Burks at point with Kemba and Rose out...

and whrn i said Trade Randle, i said if he didnt take a backseat scoring wise and relied on Defense, Reboinding and moving the ball..He was trying to score to much forcing shots and the others were not getting intl a rythym..

Since then he has taken less shots and moved the ball, in the 2md half on saturday he deferred to the others..

You want to call someone out at least know what your talking about

Be a man. Step up your game. Work your ass off or step away. Don’t tarnish your image as NY always loves its home town players. You were a great college player, great pro, if you work your ass off fine. Or bow out gracefully. Be a leader and help the kids.

If Kemba would of been better if they didnt sign Fournier and vice versa, was adding 2 scorers to much to gel...

and neither are good defenders so it just felt like to much to cover up on that side, if just Kemba and kept Bullock or started burks at the 2 you could hide Kemba and maybe Kemba offensively could be more agressive..

Multiple league sources believe the Knicks will look to trade Kemba Walker, per

“A source close to the Knicks indicated New York may also have a potential trade partner in the Houston Rockets, who are eager to move John Wall.”

You wanna get even more pissed? Hahn was on NBA radio with Isola and Scal this morning and was saying he could see the Knicks pursuing Westbrook. Said that they lack that "alpha" type star. Uchhhhhhh

he was on the westbrook train when the Rockets wanted to trade him..
I think no doubt knicks
nygiants16 : 11/30/2021 10:07 am : link
are waiting for a star point, i dont think Wall or Westbrook at this point should be that star point..

i was happy with Kemba because i thought he could play off the ball, takeover when needed and really help this team..
for a guy who

has been an analyst for quite some time, covered the league as a reporter, and actually played college basketball, Hahn says a lot of dumb things.

hes so much different on his facebook page and his facebook lives...

I feel like when he is on the radio or on espn he falls for the Knicks for clicks
Curious to get a look at Harden tonight.

At some point the "working himself into game shape" is going to transition to "he's just older, fatter and slower and isn't drawing as many fouls." Nets fans were booing him the other night.

you know he is going to the line 15 times tonight
Yep, I wouldn't be surprised.
bceagle05 : 11/30/2021 11:27 am : link
I'm sure he has plenty of great games left in him, but he just doesn't appear to be in very good shape. You look at pictures of him from five years ago in Houston and compare it to now, and he has a noticeable Dad Bod going. He's gonna sign a monster contract this summer - presumably with the Nets - and it's going to be a disaster in a year or two.
the Harden contract
Enzo : 11/30/2021 11:39 am : link
situation is fascinating. Supposedly he was close to an extension but that didn't happen. I wonder if Brookln was trying to get him for less than the full 5 year max - which is huge. I don't think there's a lot of cap space out there next summer, so my guess is he just stays in Brooklyn.

Yeah it seems like all the clickbait radio people like him, Kay , WFAN guys always fall for that get obsessed with the star name crap. Thankfully Rose is starting to build up a nice rep of not falling for that nonsense and sticking to sensible moves. I mean their logic doesn't make any sense. We are benching Kemba mainly because of his defense and we're gonna bring in ball hog no D "stars" like Wall or Westbrook?
The wall thing has to be fluff
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/30/2021 12:07 pm : link
Wall doesn't pass the thibs filter. He's not a defender and I doubt he wants to be a drive to the basket PG anymore.

And of course the contract makes it impossible.

your clevelanddddddd Cavs.... and GM Koby Altman.

got Jarrett Allen for nothing and signed him for modest money in today's nba. what a season he is having.

Cavs this offseason
- extend Allen
- sign Lauri for cheap at the lows
- trade nothing for Rubio
- Draft Mobley
- didn't overpay Sexton

So much winning--- LETEMKNOW Cleveland.
people were running the guy out of town and now he should be GM of the year.
toughest schedule in NBA- most injuries in NBA-- still 11-10 with a roster of little kids.
Hell no to

One thing I did get right
GNewGiants : 11/30/2021 1:51 pm : link
was that I thought the Kemba signing was bad for the Knicks. I just didnt see it as a positive. He may turn it around, but it just seems hes at his best with the ball and his knees arent what they were.

Its not a signing that will kill them by any means, just never saw the fit with the group they had.

Believe it or not, Kemba probably was a better for the Lakers than he was for the Knicks.

if you were around for more then a month you would know that my best friend is the GM of the cavs--- the thread was talking harden--- who ( i am a nets fan) Allen was involved in the trade. Allen had another huge game last night. I route for the cavs because of my buddy--- so that was my cavs rant--- harmless- but also showing that you can build a team with defense first as they are doing--- and that 1 good offseason can change a franchise.

Markkanen will be hurt soon. Its only a matter of time. Cleveland will fight for a play in game but they arent ready for the big dance yet.

Oh I see. I was just doing a little bit of harmless ribbing.
