He commented that they had lost when Lawrence Taylor's number was retired. They lost when Phil Simm's number was retired. And they lost this year when Eli Manning's number was retired. He said that made them 1-3 on number retirement games.
He further went on to say that the record should stay at 1-3 for a long time as there was no one on the team presently who would qualify to have their number retired. But he did not stop there. He said the next Giant to have a number retired might not be in college now, or in high school now, or even be born yet.
He also added that John Mara was wise not to speak yesterday.
Do you really expect this organization to do anything competent?
They like to sell these special dates to maximize ticket sales.

reason for why it took the Giants so long to retire Strahan's number?

Don't know if you're joking or not. The games all sell out already, don't they?
To be fair. He had the 0-4 Narrative all worked out and had to change last minute.
Strahan retire from the NYG after the season in 2007
Gets elected into the NFL HOF in 2014
THe Giants retire his number in 2021.
ELI on the other hand, retires after the season in 2019 and they retire his number in 2021?
WTF is that?
Did they forget?
There must be a reason...
But yeah, he's been retired for a long time.

My only theory is that they honestly never planned to retire any more numbers. Teams have largely moved away from the whole idea, since they only have so many to go around.
But then Eli retired, and he's the best QB the team's ever had, so they had to retire his number. And once you make that decision, it opens the discussion up for guys like Strahan - who, strictly on merit, absolutely deserves the honor.

Bingo. Every time prior to this, when retiring 92 was raised, the response was something to the effect of, “we are going to run out of numbers.” I think that was part of the reason they started the Ring of Honor.
Now that the NFL is much more liberal in allowing players to wear single digit and non-traditional numbers for various positions, it’s easier to make the case for retiring 10 and 92. With that said, I suspect these are the last two numbers the franchise ever retires. As Florio correctly points out, nobody worthy of this distinction is coming down the pike any time soon.

If you look at the history of the Giants retiring numbers, Gifford, Simms, Taylor, there was a considerable wait for them as well, Eli was the exception not the rule.

No, they don't. I just got an email for special season-ticket holder pricing on tickets for the remaining games. The old stadium was 100% season tickets. I don't think this one is.

Not sure this is true. They retired Simms' number two years after he was cut. They retired Taylor's the year after he retired. In addition, Simms left the team on bad terms.
But for Strahan they waited 14 years. He pissed someone off, would be my guess.
For another, I'm sure this will piss a lot of people off but I'm not sure why Michael Strahan gets his number retired but Harry Carson didn't.
There is no excuse for Leonard Marshall still not being in the Ringo of Honor other than pettiness on part of ownership.
Yeah but those guys were all but done when Strahan walked through the door. I guess I should have been more clear in what I meant which was questioning why it took the Giants so long to retire his number.
Meaning they've been a poorly run organization in the last decade or so in general - not so much to do with the proper time the team takes to retire a number. Mainly, not ones retired years ago.

What point of his should be modified after yesterday's win? That Mara was wise not to speak before a crowd that likely would have booed him? That there's no one on the team who's likely to be enough of a Giants fixture to have his number retired?
