I like Shep

He gets those third down catches for firsts that you need. Toney is obviously our best receiver. After we paid Golladay, there may not be a place for Shep anymore. But he's more than solid when healthy.

As Eric noted above — Shepard takes a pay cut or is designated a post-June 1 cut and the Giants save 8.5 and 9.5 in 22/23 respectively.

The amortized portion of his bonus/re-structure will be 4M in each of 22/23 as well.

The Giants need that 8.5M next year and Shepard is a redundant and unreliable player.
It is okay to want to move away from Shepard...
EricJ : 11/29/2021 3:28 pm : link
but we really need to figure out WTF is happening with our strength and conditioning program. Too many soft tissue injuries and far too many hamstrings this year.

by Giants fans. Aside from injuries (which is a lot) he's the epitome of mediocre, but relative to the Gettleman era roster he has been one of our top targets. I think a lot of fans can't see him for what he is in absolute terms or relative to starters across the league.
Yep. Exactly

That’s been the case across the league though. I expected this last year with the bizarre offseason, but it’s happening this year instead. Anyone who plays fantasy football knows exactly what I’m talking about. I had one week recently where every one of my 8 starting players that week had a “Q” next to their name. Pretty much all ankle and hamstring injuries.
Useful, solid player when he’s healthy
illmatic : 11/29/2021 3:40 pm : link
But not at the numbers he’ll have contract wise. He’s injured far too often plus concussion concerns. He’s gone after this year.
He's a guy I've liked
Biteymax22 : 11/29/2021 4:00 pm : link
But not at his cap number and not with the amount of games he misses. He'd be a great player to have if he stayed healthy and was paid as a number 3, which is what he really is. I would have to think a new GM views him as potential cap savings.

a year or so ago that if you look at their stats, Shepard is pretty much the same player as Chris Calloway. But Shep came with much higher expectations as a 2nd rounder than Calloway did as a Plan B guy playing mainly with Dave Brown & Danny Kanell.

This guy just can't stay healthy.

Who would you take? Chris Calloway or Sterling Shepard? I'm not sure you take Shepard. Calloway at least plays.
Should have been a June 1 cut
HomerJones45 : 11/29/2021 4:04 pm : link
his production at under 10 yards a catch is replaceable by cheaper players and he is overpaid at his cap number even if he was healthy.

The wages of sin: when you don't draft well, you don't evaluate well and you don't scout well, you are overpaying mediocrities.

Calloway, He was more productive in a much more difficult era for WRs.

I had the same thought and I think it's a great comparison: small receiver who isn't particularly fast or elusive for his size. Reliable hands.

As Eric says, you probably take Calloway between the two as far as availability goes.
$3/4M a game
Joe Beckwith : 11/29/2021 4:48 pm : link
to miss about 6 games a year makes his ‘22 value about 8 M, at best, not what it will be. Plus he’ll be a year older and more injury prone.
He’s not a JAG, but his injury susceptibility makes him a neutral or negative value. He can be replaced.
Shep
stretch234 : 11/29/2021 5:54 pm : link
Would really like him if he stayed healthy longer because he could be valuable. Toney makes him expendable

His,contract of 10M signing bonus and 16 guaranteed was not bad for 4 years. Need to not look at the total as it would never go for that long

If they cut him next year post June 1 the savings is 8.5M
If the O line was decent
Rolyrock : 11/30/2021 2:59 am : link
His numbers would be too. But he is still injured too much, I would definitely take Calloway.
I like Shep - good guy,
section125 : 11/30/2021 6:36 am : link
with good hands and a good downfield blocker. But not worth his original $10 mill contract and one of the worst restructures they have made.

Just a prime example why DG and Abrams need to go.
I’ve been on an anti shep rant
mattnyg05 : 11/30/2021 7:00 am : link
For this entire season. He is the most useless player-great guy-but never in any way contributes to winning and misses a shit ton of games.
the fact that they doubled down and restructed
Ned In Atlanta : 11/30/2021 8:36 am : link
after drafting a WR in the first round is mind boggling. But this is what happens when you're perpetually going 'all in' in spite of having a bad roster.
because a few people
fkap : 11/30/2021 9:01 am : link
have mentioned "post June 1", I'll point out that the savings/dead money are the same either way. The difference is accounting. Designating the cut as post June 1 merely accelerates the savings while pushing the dead money to the future. Since we are allegedly tight on the cap in 2022, it might make sense to make the cut post June 1, but this means the cap in 2023 is that much less.

The same is true, more or less, with the restructure. Future cap space was borrowed, but his overall contract remains the same. Doesn't matter which bank you borrow from, you've still mortgaged future dollars. Think of it as a post June 1 salary.

Whatever, the point is he shouldn't have been given the contract he got, shouldn't have been on the team this season and shouldn't have been re-structured.
I'm one of those
fkap : 11/30/2021 11:37 am : link
who were bewildered by the contract he got, so I agree it was an overpay, and it is exacerbated by his inability to stay on the field.

As for the restructure: It sucks that the cap genius Abrams let us get into the situation where we needed to borrow money. But management got us to that point. From there, it really doesn't matter where the money was borrowed from. IIRC, options were limited. We borrowed from future cap. The accounting simply applied it to SS.
I'm done
Carson53 : 11/30/2021 1:37 pm : link
with this guy, that's all I got.
I didn't like his deal from the outset!
