on several levels. Aside from being a top 10 MLB pitcher Scherzer is one of the most respected players in MLB by his peers. Best of health to him and deGrom in 2022. Nice to see Cohen use his $ advantage to shake things up.
As a Yankee fan who also roots for the Mets the better they are, the more noise they make, the more eye balls they draw away from the Yankees the better at this point. Because IMO to Hal and family the Yankees are just an ATM funded by hopeful suckers. All that Hal cares about is spending just enough to keep the suckers spending. Winning a championship isn't important to him. The bottom line is his business. Maybe losing attention to Cohen and the Mets can change that thinking.
all these contracts are absurd no matter who is giving/getting them
Pushing 40? He won't even be 38 until next summer.
No tread on his tires? His 2021 stats: 15-4, 2.46 ERA (and ERA+ of 166), 0.864 WHIP. Finished 3rd in Cy Young voting, finished 14th in MVP voting.
Oh, and here are the leaders in fWAR for pitchers for the last 6 years:
1. Max Scherzer 33.2
2. Jacob deGrom 30.5
3. Gerrit Cole 25.9
4. Chris Sale 23.5
5. Aaron Nola 22.7
6. Justin Verlander 22.5
7. Clayton Kershaw 22.4
If Scherzer doesn't have any tread left, what does it say about your boy Cole, who trails Scherzer by a wide margin??
Stan talking out of his ass, example #642....
Hang in there Stan - you'll get something right. Eventually....
And he had a 'dead arm' in the playoffs. Huge pass.
Sigh.....
Of course, you're completely ignoring the fact that a lot of pitchers had arm issues at the end of the year, given they threw so few innings in 2020 and then ramped up to so many in 2021.
And even with that, his playoff numbers: 2.2 ERA, 1.1 WHIP and 23K's in 16.2 innings, including a game vs SFG where he threw 8 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits.
Stan, do you realize the Yankees gave a nine year deal worth $324 Million to a 30 year old pitcher, which will take him to age 39. The Mets on the other hand gave $130 Million to a 37 year old for three years. Both Cole and Scherzer will be of similar age when their respective contracts expire. In fact, the Mets will be past Scherzer after the 2024 season, while the Yankees will still have Cole until 2028 season ends.

being shitty on a positive, even celebratory Mets thread?
Never happen!
Hey, they've won 1 championship in the last 20 years... They're clearly the best team anyone could ever hope to root for, and their success clearly makes the people who root for them better than everyone else.

Wow, this is sadness on display.
Sadness is going into a thread of another team to be a wet blanket. Especially when you try to make fun of the fans for not having won in 35 years when 'his team' (one he does nothing for) hasn't won in a while either
when there is that rich kid who always gets the best toys...
The other kids look up to him with envy at what his parents bought him..
Then a poor kid finally get some luck and his parents get a great new job and get him a new, awesome toy that even the aforementioned rich kid didn't get..
Then the rich kid (instead of being happy for the poor kid), tells the poor kid that his toy sucks and it doesn't matter that his parents have money now because his toys will always suck

great posts - there were some classy posts from other teams. There is one dude on this site that certainly has some anger or inferiority issues. To troll Mets fans on a NY Giants site with such vitriol means that person must have some shortcomings outside this forum. Like moespree mentioned, these fans likely weren't around to remember the late 80s where both teams were legitimate. They only know Yankee dominance and now Cohen is trying to change the culture and it annoys some.
Being a fan of the Yankees or the Mets doesn't add inches to the ol' pishadeel.
When you think of it, these ballplayers are getting staggering amounts of money. Some of these guys are going to have great grandchildren sitting on their yachts talking about how great grandad played for the Dodgers, left the family a pile of money and no one in the family has had to work since.
Stan is either having fun trying to get arise out of Mets fans by stirring the pot or is just an insecure loser. Of course there is always risk in giving a 37 year old pitcher $40M+ for 3-years; but if there's one 37-year old pitcher you invest in it is Scherzer.
I'm fine with Javy to Detroit; it feels wrong to trade McNeil when his value is at it's lowest and think he should be in-line for a bounceback year. Now we just need a mid-rotation inning eater and a lefty out of the pen and this offseason would be a huge success. Nobody wins the WS in the offseason but the Mets are a much better team and 180-degrees different from where they were when Noah took the LA deal. Mets fans should be excited - we've been waiting for a move like Scherzer since Cohen took over.
million values Scherzer at a roughly 5 win SP (5.375) to be exact.. he was worth 5.4 million in 2021, projected 5.1 in 2022. Obviously this deal has little to no surplus and will likely be a slight overpay but you don't win games based on value.
I liked Baez. And they are going to need some sluggers. Cano is like 40 freakin years old.
I wish they could have retained Baez. What was up with that booing thumbs down thing he did. Kinda douchey but, he would also do it to the opposing teams fans too like at Dodgers stadium.

Great offseason so far!
Let's keep the creativity going, Mets Management.
Time to turn the corner finally!

With three sentiments:
(1) Congrats to Mets fans for getting a top flight starter;
(2) Very exciting day;
(3) I’ve seen a lotta big money tossed around by my team and it doesn’t always work.
Regarding #3 - true, but us Met fans have had such a shitty owner for so long, it's great to finally have one who's willing to spend!
I hear you! Absolutely!!! Having an owner that’s willing to spend is a great sign and generates tremendous excitement for the next season.

Not just spending for the sake of spending, but short term deals and not sacrificing picks when comparable non-Qualified players are available.

Oh, I don't know about that. But I'm so tired of the Mets wasting deGrom's prime, it's great to see them really going for it now...

Thanks M.S. Been a long time for us Mets fans. And I always appreciate the class you show in your posts.
