NFT: Tiger Woods semi-retires from golf

dpinzow : 11/29/2021 5:28 pm
says that he cannot play full time on the PGA Tour ever again after the car accident; will have to "pick and choose" a few events each year
Tiger Woods update - ( New Window )
A couple of extra points from the article
dpinzow : 11/29/2021 5:31 pm : link
--Tiger believes he can play a few events each year going forward, but cannot compete "on the highest level"
--Said it was 50-50 whether he would be leaving the hospital with one leg after the car accident
--"I don't think I'll have the body to climb Mount Everest again" referencing his return from several back surgeries before the car accident
that really blows

epic career. That 2019 Masters was magical, one of my favorite memories in sports. Really wanted him to get another crack or two at a major.
wow - not the way you want to end your career
mattlawson : 11/29/2021 5:37 pm : link
one of the most interesting falls from grace in sports history, if not the greatest. hugely dissapointing

+1

He’ll still be around. But it’s the end of an era.

He'll still play the majors when he's able, but that's probably the only times aside from tournaments right before majors, that you'll see him.

Due to his 2019 Masters win, Tiger can enter any PGA Tour event until the end of 2024 without receiving a sponsors exemption. He'd get one whenever he wants, but until the end of 2024, his tour ranking is meaningless because the Masters win gives him a 5 year tour exemption.

Tiger's Masters win in 1997 (his first major) allows him to play the Masters for life, or until Augusta National gives him a nudge to no longer play there due to age/deteriorating skills.

As a result, he does not need to apply for a special exemption to play the US Open until 2025, assuming he does not win the tournament in 2022, 2023 or 2024

Tiger can play the Open Championship (British Open) until he is 60 years of age.

Tiger can play the PGA Championship for life
yeah but it isn't the same

just making the cut will be a struggle it seems, winning a major seems like it would be almost impossible.
he was already picking and choosing. i think the comment about

not competing at the highest level is bigger news. that's a bummer. still, he'll be 50 soon enough. hopefully we get to see him compete against the other old dudes.

I think it's different this time, because he was trying to play several events in a row to gain top form again. Post-accident Tiger is probably not playing more than 8 events a year (the 4 majors and a tuneup before each of the majors)
Sucks

he is why I'm a golf fan, but at least he has both legs and can pick which tournaments he will play in (if you want a silver lining).
Too bad.
johnnyb : 11/29/2021 6:01 pm : link
Tiger is his own worse enemy and only him to blame for where he is now. Thankfully it is only HIS career he ruined.

He can play in any tournament he wants, except for the three FedEx playoff events, which require qualification through the FedEx point system, until the end of the 2024 season
Good luck, tiger

A couple of decades ago he was the Beatles of golf. After his fall from grace, a mere mortal.

My brother wrote a song about Tiger Woods back in simpler days. He recorded this in 2001. May have written it a year or two earlier.

Kind of a skating rink feel. You'll see. Lol.

probably thinks he will not be able to walk four rounds without pain on top of loss of skill due to the injury.

Not sure he will do the Senior/Champions Tour either where he can ride.

I actually think Tiger can still be in the mix at Augusta National a couple of more times, but he'll probably be noncompetitive at the other majors. He just knows that course so well and only needs muscle memory to play it well. Jack Nicklaus finished tied for 6th at the 1998 Masters at 58 years old. Tom Watson lost a playoff at the 2009 British Open at 59 years old. This is of course, assuming he's able to get back into some sort of playing shape

Outside of Kobe, I can't recall an athlete I've detested more from the jump. Yes, I'm not an idiot & will never argue his greatness, but he came off-to me-as a complete jerk & total phony.

Obviously I'm in the minority on that, but se la vie.
I just saw the video

or at least part of it. Seems he is only expecting to reduce his schedule - ha he's been looking for ways to play fewer events each year for a while.
Tiger Woods has a lifetime PGA Tour exemption
arniefez : 11/29/2021 7:16 pm : link
He didn't need the Masters win for that. Phil does too. 20 PGA Tour wins and 15 full years on tour qualifies a player for a lifetime exemption.

The majors and the world golf championships are not PGA TOUR events. The Masters lets their past champions play into their mid 60's unless they're shooting embarrassing scores. The Open Championship allows their past champions to play until they're 60. The US Open and the PGA would probably give him a special exemption if he was playing well and he wanted one. He won't have to worry about qualifying to play if he's physically able to play.
The Charlie Woods watch is on
BlackLight : 11/29/2021 11:37 pm : link
He turns 13 in a couple months. His father played his first Masters when he was 19.
