I'm not about to trash the guy on his way out. It sounds like Kelly wanted the administration to put a lot more into the facilities and also significantly up his salary and his assistants as well and they didn't meet his demands. Can't say I blame him with what LSU was reportedly offering.
2016 not withstanding he did a great job. It's not an easy place to succeed in todays landscape and he has done a terrific job since 2017.
Don't these coaches usually leave for a bigger name program? Notre Dame is arguably the biggest.
You can bring in much better players at LSU because of the admission standards. He’d never be able to recruit well enough at Notre Dame to win a title.
didn't owe ND anything. If they weren't willing to make a greater commitment to the program and give him the tools needed to get to the next level which is national title contender, I can't blame him for leaving.
LSU is one of the 5 best jobs in the country.
I would promote Marcus Freeman. I think Weis flopping will prevent them from doing that and Swarbick has made it clear he prefers someone with HC experience, but Dabo had no HC experience, Ryan Day was only a sole offensive coordinator for one season, before they got the Clemson and Ohio State jobs.
He may have maxed out at ND but was a great fit there. He will not be a good fit in the SEC. He will struggle ti make the SEC championship.
This is a case of LSU chasing a big name. Doesnt make a good match but at least he will run a clean program for them.
From ND perspective its a massive blow if they lose some of the really good recruits they have recently landed but They may need somthing else to get them a chance to win a Playoff game.
My brain is out of whack, Haha. I had a buddy text me this morning about Kelly going to Baton Rouge & I didn't believe it...now that it's seemingly a reality, my mind is scrambling.
I’m shocked he would leave a place where his job security is damn near guaranteed for a place you can get fired two years after winning a title. Strikes me as a move a guy makes when he doesn’t think he’ll be coaching much longer.
I think Fickell to ND and Freeman back to Cinncy would be the corresponding moves. If true. Which I still refuse to believe.
Maybe I'll be shocked but I just don't see the ND administration even considering Meyer. Some feel like Meyer used them 16 years ago or whenever it was and the scandals following him certainly dont help either.
I just want to promote freeman. It's risky but less risky in todays game than it used to be. Smart, Day and Dabo are 3 of the best coaches in the sport and never lead a program before they got those jobs.

ND doesn't pay him a lot. LSU will increase his salary by 4-5X...easily.

I thought Kelly had 5 years tops at ND left. I dont think he's a guy that wants to coach forever. And he very well may feel like he can't win a title at ND.
LSU is a very underrated job. One of the top 5 jobs in the entire sport imo.
Orgeron never should have been hired by LSU. He was way in over his head and made so many terrible decisions off the field. He caught lightning in a bottle one year, he got the right coordinators that year and as soon as they left LSU imploded. LSU had no choice but to let him go with the things going on within that program.
& FU Kelly. I'm so sick of these fucking coaches lying about being 'happy' where they are & then days later sticking it to the fan base.
They aren’t going to tell you what they are actually thinking, it would be a terrible, no win scenario for them. And if talks backfire you now work at a place where everyone including fans know you don’t want to be there.
It’s a much larger scale and not exactly apples to apples, but would you be honest with your boss and all of your peers while you were interviewing elsewhere?
He's going restore LSU. Kelly can coach, Louisiana is a talent rich state, and he'll get more players due to easier academics.
Didn't work out well for Jimbo Fisher going from FSU to Texas A&M.
Well cannot be angry. He has the right to coach any place he wants.
That was LSU's main target - oddly enough - Fisher. It's a fair point, but every situation is different. A&M isn't LSU and they are battling in-state rivals Texas, TTech, Baylor, etc for the top recruits. But Fisher has really increased A&M's recruiting. He's getting close...

If bringing Fickel in loses Freeman I wouldnt do it.

Like I said before, I’d be shocked if he did this. Far more shocked than I was about Lincoln Riley. I do hope Notre Dame gets killed for this because having assistants and now a successful head coach leave for other schools like they’re fucking SUNY Buffalo is embarrassing. Open up the wallets and really embrace trying to win.

Fuck it. Coaches leaving left & right. Enjoy being Bama's & UGA's bitch Brian.

The new recruiting dates make it very important to bail before the bowl game if you're going to leave. Early signing period is like a week away.
I'm not sure Fickell will be willing to bail before the playoff. And ND can't afford to wait, recruiting for 2022 will fall apart if they do so.
Well, he was there for a decade +. ;)
He's going restore LSU. Kelly can coach, Louisiana is a talent rich state, and he'll get more players due to easier academics.
I don't see it. He wants a lot of talent and ND's standards put a limit on their talent pool.

surprised. Thought he was going to be the long term coach at ND.

Fickell & Freeman are probably top candidates to replace him. And the thought of Kelly eating gumbo...LOL.

But the LSU number is rumored to be in the 8 figure per year. ND isn't paying that.

$2.7 mill at ND - yeah LSU will go $6-$8 mill.

Is Rees even 30? That would be unbelievable...

Would be interesting to see if Rees goes with Kelly.
Freeman. I dont buy the need for experience in todays college football. I think HC experience matters less in college these days than it used to.
Freeman is a midwest guy, has been at ND for a year and is very highly thought of.
Fickell would be the other option, but even if he would be willing to come tomorrow I would still prefer Freeman.
Yup basically negligent homicide and he still gets to make millions a year. Awful.
