Dane Brugler's new Mock at The Athletic

Stan in LA : 11/30/2021 2:58 pm
Quote:
6. New York Giants — Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah

The Giants saw first-hand what a versatile linebacker with explosive traits can do for your defense when they met the division-rival Dallas Cowboys with rookie stud Micah Parsons. Lloyd isn’t quite on Parsons’ level, but his blend of instincts and speed helps him impact the game in multiple ways. Linebacker might not be the top need for the Giants, but adding defensive playmakers is never a bad idea.

7. New York Giants (from Chicago) — Tyler Linderbaum, OC, Iowa*

Since the merger in 1970 only once has a center been drafted in the top 10 — and that is only if you include Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, who was drafted as an “interior blocker” ninth overall in 1983. But in this class, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Linderbaum this high, especially to a team like the Giants who need to add tough, athletic blockers in the trenches.

Devin Lloyd is an absolute monster

Would love to see him in Blue.

Instant superstar upgrade!
Oooof. No
Anakim : 11/30/2021 3:06 pm : link
Two great players, but no, not top-10. I’m not taking an C and an off-ball LB in the top-10.
Devin Lloyd
Earl the goat : 11/30/2021 3:15 pm : link
And Kenyon Green. To play LG next to AT
5-7 years of a great left side
At this time, I wouldn't have any problem with it
JonnyR : 11/30/2021 3:17 pm : link
The perceived "Top 10" guys are going to change 100 times between now and the draft.

If we can get a couple of long-term, high quality players who fill need and value with those picks and we should all be happy. Who they are at this time in the process doesn't matter.
...
broadbandz : 11/30/2021 3:17 pm : link
We need a tackel and starting guard. This o-line cannot go another draft without multiple 1st rnd picks. Just cant do it.

...what/who is his top 10?
I would be wary of spending such high picks on LB/OC
Producer : 11/30/2021 3:23 pm : link
unless they just project out to be position-busting players.

generally the Giants should think about spending those picks on EDGE/OT/QB, and in their case maybe a very high level OG. Otherwise, maybe trading back is in order.
A LB this high has to be a pass rushing edge
BillT : 11/30/2021 3:34 pm : link
A guy like Karlaftis will still be there even if Thibideaux and Hutchinson are gone.
Is Devin
BigBlueJ : 11/30/2021 3:35 pm : link
an Edge? Or can he project to be because that is what we need.
Brugler's top 10
Terry in CO : 11/30/2021 3:46 pm : link

4. New York Jets (from Seattle) — Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU*
5. New York Jets — Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State*
6. New York Giants — Devin Lloyd, LB, Utah
7. New York Giants (from Chicago) — Tyler Linderbaum, OC, Iowa*
8. Philadelphia Eagles — Kyle Hamilton, DS, Notre Dame*

If it went that way, I would do it what the Eagles did there. I’d go with Hamilton and Karlaftis.
Interesting, only one QB at #10
JonC : 11/30/2021 3:50 pm : link
matches my opinion of the QBs, so far.

I hate picking an OC or ILB that high, and this basically illustrates why slipping out of the top 5 of this draft is not a great outcome imo.
I haven't looked at the OL...
Brown_Hornet : 11/30/2021 3:53 pm : link
... going into 2022. I wonder if a 3rd OT is worthy of top 10 status.

I do like Karliftis.
other first round QBs in his mock
Terry in CO : 11/30/2021 3:54 pm : link
16. Pittsburgh Steelers — Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina*
19. Washington Football Team – Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss*

I know many are high on Charles Cross of Mississippi State. I don’t know much about him, but many think he’s right behind Neal and Ickey
More open to the OC
AcesUp : 11/30/2021 3:59 pm : link
They're just harder to find so I'm not opposed to an overpay on positional value there. You can piggyback off the OL thread from yesterday about how shitty OL play is across the league to support that argument. Not to mention how inept this franchise is at identifying OL talent, a safe choice there that's supported by the consensus isn't the worst thing.
Never have a problem
Aaroninma : 11/30/2021 4:01 pm : link
taking an IOWA OL.
Giants are not taking a LBer and Center with two picks in the top 7.
Vanzetti : 11/30/2021 4:02 pm : link
Zero chance that happens
ILB
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/30/2021 4:08 pm : link
is a huge need. I am all for two impact D players in round one with a trade down. Very deep OL draft. You can get two in rounds 2-3 if they pick up an extra pick.

This ILB is a redshirt senior. Usually the exceptionally talented ones come out early. Could be nothing but let's see how the pre draft goes. LB that high needs to have a big impact and be complete.
I haven't started looking
Biteymax22 : 11/30/2021 4:12 pm : link
at a lot of these guys to really have an opinion (out of the top couple of edges) but off ball linebacker is a bigger need than people realize and if Linderbaum is the best OL available I don't care if he's a C, G or T, we need them all and I want the best guy.
That may be and no one is disputing that ILB and C are two
Anakim : 11/30/2021 4:16 pm : link
Huge needs, but it’s bad positional value to draft those positions in the top-10
Anak +1
JonC : 11/30/2021 4:22 pm : link
Trade down and pile up the picks in this mock.
I like
Joe Beckwith : 11/30/2021 4:35 pm : link
the Jets and Sheagles picks.
OK , maybe, on Lindenbaum,(Gates return is questionable) but we really need a T.
Lloyd: not when we really need an impactful ER.
?
Hilary : 11/30/2021 4:49 pm : link
Is Devin Lloyd better than Ojabu
Given that ranking Karlaftis should be one of the picks
BillT : 11/30/2021 4:49 pm : link
He and Linderbaum would be a great duo. We cannot leave legitimate pass rushing talent on the board. It's a 1a/1b need along with OL. If he's a good pick at 9, he's a good pick at 7.
Adding a star ER to the D would be sooo exciting.
manh george : 11/30/2021 5:19 pm : link
See: last week's game. To be sure, we won based on an incompetent passing game for Philly. HOWEVER, add real ER talent to our massive interior 3 and 1) you put consistent pressure on the qb, which we didn't, and 2) you prevent the offense from spreading the field and giving the rbs ample room, which we didn't.

Surely we look at adding an OL with the other pick, and most likely another one in 2 or 3. Nevertheless, the likely gap up in quality on D from having a real threat on the edge is exciting. The DTs would love it, too.
THR's Top 10 -
TC : 11/30/2021 6:26 pm : link
Their PERCEPTION of the NFL's CURRENT collective consensus -

1. - Kayvon Thibodeau ER
2. - Matt Corral OL
3. - Kyle Hamilton S
4. - Derek Stingley CB
5. - DeMarvin Leal DL
6. - Aidan Hutchinson ER
7. - Matt Corral QB
8. - George Karlaftis ER
9. - Chris Olave WR
10. - Kaiir Elam CB

Has Linderbaum as # 11.

I second that. Devin Lloyd is flat out legit. I’d take him in a heartbeat
I see everyone mentioning
tyrik13 : 12/1/2021 1:06 am : link
GK, imho he’s not a game changing ER like KT or AH. He’s a solid edge, but I like Drake Jackson from USC better.
Drake
tyrik13 : 12/1/2021 1:09 am : link
Can play hand in the dirt and standing up. His athleticism and versatility are off the charts
Are you not tired of the crap LB play on the Giants??
Rick in Dallas : 12/1/2021 3:53 am : link
Devin Lloyd can play now at a very high level also adding pass rush capability.
You can always come back in the second round and draft either Foskey of Notre Dame or Johnson of FSU at the EDGE position which is very deep this year.
I would have no complaints with Linderbaum at the center position because we have no idea at this time what will happen with Gates unfortunately.
I would come back in the third round and find either a OT or OG which also happens to be a deep position this upcoming draft.

Agree about GK. But I like Johnson from Florida State better than Jackson
I could go for that

Two really good players at two positions of need.

What player is someone trading up for? No Justin Fields here, I guess we have to hope someone falls in love with a QB.
Someone(s) will fall in love with QBs

Going to need 3 QBs to emerge
AcesUp : 12/1/2021 2:41 pm : link
That applies to whether the Giants will be able to upgrade the position themselves without a massive trade up or if they'll have the opportunity to make another trade down.

Texans and Lions are all but locked in to the first two picks and will almost assuredly be looking QB.
I remember people freaking out
