11 names to watch if Giants GM Dave Gettleman does retire

Nice article. Just hated the word ‘if’ in the title

Ossenfort has NE ties with JJ. And TN has been a well run organization of late, though I'm not going to pretend to know how much weight Ossenfort is throwing around in the room.

Abrams...I wanna vomit. I don't know how Mara can stand in front of the reporters & fan base and promote from WITHIN after the last decade. I'd rather him just be honest & tell us we're suckers.
Should put the list of names in a post and

It's weird to be mad at BBI and not the consistently terrible football team that hasn't even fielded a decent offensive line in over a decade.

is that Mara will be hiring both Accorsi and Gettleman as consultants on next GM search.

I kid. But I think we all know where this is going... Kevin Abrams.
GM Candidate Prerequisite - NE Ties?
Mdgiantsfan : 11/30/2021 8:16 pm : link
Much talk in trying to project who might be candidates to replace Getts starts with people with ties to New England. With the thinking that that candidate would be a good fit for Judge. I sure hope this is not a prerequisite for serious candidates. If by chance this team were to stumble to finish this season and have similar results next year, then we could be looking at a new HC in 2023.

I wouldn’t sleep on Kyle O’Brien. He’s kind of an outsider of an insider. I assume he took the job in no small way to get a shot at replacing DG.

Don’t know much about him other than resume that includes Patriots and Chiefs. Don’t think he’s been around long enough to assign that much blame for current state of roster

Abrams being on these lists is a joke. Imagine being a fan of another franchise and having your team hire Abrams.

Mara shouldn't even give any of these internal guys an interview. Let's not pretend this organization has been anything other than a complete failure for nearly ten years now.
Gettleman doesn't deserve to retire

Mara telling Giant fans why hiring Abrams or O’Brien/Petit(internal hire) was the right choice for this organization. At some points fans have to revolt right

I don't think I'd watch a Giant game next year if they do that. I don't think there's anyway they do it.
Nice to see Adam Peters on that list...

I've brought him up several times this year. He's played a big role in building out that 9ers roster since 2017.

Agree, and that’s probably the the right gut check we need Mara to feel so he picks someone from the outside....

"Because Kevin is a guy that can have that open, honest conversation with me when the urge to sell hope to you folks rather than make solid roster choices overwhelms me..".

Sorry, I was dreaming while wide awake.
If Mara hires Abrams...
EricJ : 11/30/2021 11:05 pm : link
he will have to explain why he did not have enough confidence in Abrams a few years ago and went outside to hire DG... but NOW Abrams magically is the right guy to fix this steaming pile of dog shit he calls a football team?
It is inevitable that DG will be gone after this season

He is someone I really don't want. Don't really want anyone that had their chance as a GM and didn't cut it.

I would so strongly prefer an up and comer from another strong organization than a retread

one would THINK that would be the case... and BBI would HOPE. However, John Mara has given people way too much rope in the past. I am sure you can come up with a list of people who were here too long (coaches or players).
I don’t understand how you can compare the resumes of Abrams
cosmicj : 12/1/2021 6:50 am : link
And Pioli and decide to go with Abrams. It just doesn’t compute.
I’d prefer taking a chance on a young, up and comer..
Sean : 12/1/2021 7:09 am : link
I think more than anything, this franchise desperately needs fresh ideas. However, I think Mara’s strong preference will be someone with experience. Add in that Pioli & Dimitroff have NE ties, I think that is what will happen. If Mara goes that route, I’d like to see Abrams fired and a new asst. GM brought in.

I don't think fans who say stuff like that really mean it. These fans are the BBI Pollyannas and they're just pissed off at anyone who doesn’t share their overly optimistic point of view of the Giants.

As someone else pointed out, it’s odd that they would hate other posters for saying the team sucks, instead of those actually responsible for the Giants sucking.

I think the Giants need assured competence - someone who can help build the proper scouting and analytics systems. I suspect the Giants have fallen way behind here.
I Read That List
Bernie : 12/1/2021 11:34 am : link
and made the brilliant observation that I do not know a thing about any of them that I could not get from a simple LinkedIn search. Meaning, I have no idea if they would be any better or dare I say worse than the current regime. Seems to me the problem with this front office is not diagnosing the issues, but rather selecting the right players to fix those issues. Whether it's in free agency or the draft, this has been the issue for the last 10 years. Sure, there have been a few hits, but not nearly enough (stating the obvious). There is no way of knowing if anyone on this list will do any better. Hopefully John Mara doesn't think the same and choose to do nothing.

I've heard to keep an eye on Pioli for the Giants but if you want two names that aren't on that list that most people in the league rave about, it's Ed Dodds and Jeff Ireland. Both are considered two of the best talent evaluators in the league. Even with Ireland's slightly checkered past, he's still highly thought of.

I sort of agree. None of the names blew me away but Adam Peters really interests me. From what I have read, he has an excellent eye for both college and pro personnel and has been instrumental in building out the current 9ers roster and the Broncos during the Manning years.

Plus, I liked this quote from John Lynch when Peters got promoted to the Assistant GM role:

"Adam has earned this promotion, which is a result of his hard work and dedication to the 49er Way," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement.

As long as it's not the Giants Way... ;)
Don't get the SF org simps

Rex Ryan was right, they had a good defense for maybe one year and traded a truckload of picks for a QB from Division IV North Dakota and pass on Mac Jones. Must be some ESPN media thing.

Yes otherwise looks like a band of flunkies, its a wasteland out there. TB is the latest SB champion, but definitely not a standard model for success. NE is all Belichick. And KC is all Reid, definitely don' want their coffee boys to be our GM.
The Pats candidates concern me
AcesUp : 12/1/2021 3:38 pm : link
It's Mara realizing he can't promote internally and just going one branch down on the family tree. Also, keeping Judge and almost giving him the keys to the next GM hire just feels like repeating past mistakes. So the coach on the hotseat will be a major driver of the decision on bringing on the guy who may be replacing him the very next year?

This would be the same exact shit we have been doing, just with a twist. It's like watching the "Ernest goes to ____" movies with this team.
Yeah,
Essex : 12/1/2021 3:42 pm : link
I do not want to turn this process over to Joe Judge. I want to find someone who can be a dynamic executive (see Andrew Berry CLE) and let him decide all these guys fates (Judge, Jones, etc). Don't let Judge get to pick the next GM, what the heck has he done to deserve that honor or input.
only if the team finishes real strong, and it's a pipe dream
nyfootballfan : 12/1/2021 3:52 pm : link
..it would be nice to feel comfortable upgrading joe judge and get a scouting wonk and a strong cap guy to do his bidding.

but compare him to what we had, Shurmer and McAdoo were like Jack Lemmon character from Glengary Glen Ross.
Mara did interview Abrams last time......
Simms11 : 12/1/2021 7:07 pm : link
Abrams has been working as an assistant GM of sorts for the past 20 years with the Giants, but I think they keep him in that role, unless the incoming GM was his own crew. I think the Giants go outside the box and familiarity this time, like they did with Judge. Pioli and Ossenfort are both names I’m sure will continue to get a lot of buzz. Pioli has a very successful resume. Maybe not his last few years in KC, but he has been a very good personnel guy.
Pioli

I don’t think hiring Bill Parcells son in law is stepping very far outside of John Mara’s comfort zone. In fact, it’s very predictably Mara.

David B. : 12/2/2021 9:56 am : link
I believe that the most comfortable thing Mara could do for himself is hire Abrams. Business as usual. Ignore the rot in the building. Preserve the Giants way.

That said, I don't know that even Mara could kid himself into thinking that the fanbase won't revolt (empty seats) if he picks a guy who has the same stink of the last 10 horrid seasons on him.

The Maras have proven they have an immense capacity to swallow losing seasons so long as there are butts in seats. Empty seats are the only thing that ever affected change. If Mara hires from within and things don't turn around immediately (which seems unlikely), I think the fans will stay away.

Mara may sense that, and it may nudge him out of his comfort zone into looking outside this time. At least I hope so.

If you do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got. Uh, could that be nuthin'? - Steven Tyler

Still, as you point out, I'm sure he'll talk to all of his sounding board guys including Accorsi and Belichick about possible candidates. Not sure that's so bad if he doesn't weigh their opinions too heavily.
