Bailey Zappe QB Western Kentucky

Bizfoodie : 12/1/2021 10:16 pm
Anybody see any of his games live? Getting a lot of spotlight currently . Has just under 5k passing yards,52 tds, and 9 ints. Kept seeing articles about him so decided to watch his highlights and yes I know highlights don’t tell the whole story which is why I’m wondering has anybody watched him play on tv.. I know many say this QB class is weak but with a new GM coming in next year and Daniel Jones being on the clock I’m not to sure if Judge and the new GM go QB in this draft.
Had a big 2nd half in their championship game vs Marshal last week

He lit it up at Houston Baptist, but of course the competition was 1-AA (or whatever its called now FCS?). He's only 6-1 though. It will be interesting to see how he does at the Combines
Link the highlights. I’ll check them out

His lack of arm strength is blatantly obvious.

Yea his competition doesn’t seem to be the best but those numbers look crazy. Definitely can sling it but again who he’s played definitely matters. Even if the giants show no interest maybe a team picking before us does and an edge rusher or online prospect slides down to us.
1. Awesome name

2. He can sling it
3. Awesome LAST name. Baily is kinda meh

I like the wheels and the arm looks good

It’s hard for me to tell with college cause the guys are so wide open.

I’ll root for Whoever is the qb for the giants

Yup looking around that seems to be his biggest weakness. Avoids the rush well, above average athlete, accurate, has good touch on all levels, and good pocket awareness. Read an article I can’t remember where that he would be an easy 1st round pick if he had a cannon for an arm.

There is a lot to like but the lack of arm strength will be a big hindrance in the NFL. His deep balls have way too much air under them.
A few things stick out

First, most of those highlights were from HBU, which is even lesser competition than Western Kentucky, I believe. Second, the level of competition is most glaring when throwing to wide open WRs virtually every play. Third, the arm strength seems to be lacking, which will be his biggest problem at the pro level.
Some of the best arm talent in draft
Sy'56 : 12/2/2021 7:23 am : link
Release and accuracy to all levels is very good. His lower body is thick and powerful. Height is an issue, but that is becoming less and less part of "prototype" in today's NFL.

His mechanics are better than everyone I've started to dive in on. He is a gamer. A lot to like. Will be at Senior Bowl I think
With all due respect to Sy

Zappe has Kyle Lauletta arm strength. Throws a spiral about 60% of the time. I've read that his coaches think he is football smart, and that is a big positive, but it is also 1-AA level competition/coaching. I'll give him credit for standing in against pressure and moving well in and out of the pocket. Throws a catchable ball most of the time. From the highlight reel and the "All Throws" vs UT Martin, I would argue his accuracy is far short of special.
Watched him play vs MSU live

turned out to have a bad pass D anyway, but the kid was hard to stop. Reminded me of Brees.

But he brought a OC and WRs to WKy with him. Not sure how much that mattered, but he’s got talent.

Kyle Lauletta was the first name that popped into my head too.

That does appear to show up on that film. Also, he's a bit undersized and seems to have a 3/4 release slot - I think he'd have a lot of passes knocked down.

That said, I'm always intrigued by crazy production, and I would have no problem taking a day 3 flyer on him if he was still available.
Somebody mentioned him here a while back
Producer : 12/2/2021 9:53 am : link
maybe it was JonC.

I watched a bit of one of his games that happened to be on. The kid could move the offense, that's for sure.

Wasn't enough to make an eval but I thought he could have a place in the NFL, though maybe as a backup. I think he's worth at least a late round flyer.
or maybe it was Sy who had mentioned him
Producer : 12/2/2021 9:54 am : link
sorry Sy. It was a while ago.

I am always in favor of drafting a developmental QB on day 3 but I don't want to use a day 1 or day 2 pick on Zappe. I always take college stats with a grain of salt. I remember Josh Johnson had an insane final season in college where he threw 43 td's to just 1 interception.

Not so fast. He played back to back games against MSU and Indiana from the Big 10 which is presumably a step up in competition. WKU lost both games but Bailey's stats for the two games combined 77 for 108, 853 yards 6 td's and no picks. Wouldn't be that quick to write the kid off.

I agree I’m not too sure I would draft him early on but maybe somewhere in the 4th ( if he lasts that long). Believe he’s in the senior bowl so that could raise his stock along with the combine .Think teams get to caught up in size and certain attributes and don’t look at if the player can play. I’m not a QB guru but I would be all for drafting a developmental QB this year to compete with whoever we draft at qb in 2023 if Daniel Jones doesn’t work out. If I’m being honest I’m not sold on Daniel Jones I like him but it seems he needs a good to great team for him to be just average to good...can’t spend big money on that imv. I’m rooting for him tho
