is a very good listen. And let me be clear I am not advocating Scott Pioli for Giants GM. Not my point. Its just a good listen hearing a guy who has been a GM talk. Papa, Banks, Pioli interview - ( New Window )
As arniefez has pointed out multiple times, the Giants have a very unique situation in the ownership structure. It is also a family business. Right or wrong, Mara likely will never blow that up.
What someone like Pioli brings is an understanding how the Giants do business.
will be a great GM with options may have very little interest in joining this decision-making hierarchy.
Would you?
You come to the Giants as GM and you are no better than 3rd on the totem poll. It's about control. This stuff is why we lost Parcells too. The Maras will not give anyone control no matter how qualified they are.
and what is really important is that the GM-Coach dymanic is set and good and they have a shared vision of what is happening and will happen.
We cannot keep the situation where we seem to be gather pieces and a fluid attitude and mentality but that fluidity isn't flowing from a solid starting spot. It is all fluid and when all fluid that means no singular identity to fall back on when times are tough.
100% agree with you on both fronts. They travel in the same circles, he's been around, part of the Giants extended family. He'll be the guy as fans praise the Giants for going "outside the organization" when they're really not, it's the same family tree where Mara can bring in another like-minded person from his demo.
Pioli hasn't been able to secure a GM role in about a decade. He might be a fit for another organization but he's not even close to what this one needs. It's more of the same, staying in Mara's safe-space. I do like him and Riddick in the media though, so I'll probably give that a listen later. Just don't want to see either running this franchise.
#1 Takeaway: Carl Banks is head over heels in love with Pioli. My goodness the fawning. Question is, how much influence and how much of a voice does Banks have with ownership, such that they'd hear him out. Because to hear him tell it, he can put one hell of a sales pitch up for Pioli.
And for his part, I found Pioli to be insightful, engaging, self-effacing and a critical thinker. Had zero expectation for him going into watching that...other than feeling he'd probably come away sounding washed-up and dinosaur-ish. 180 degrees from that.
..in my opinion isn't so much finding the person who can work with the staff as it is a person who can influence-up and stop management from getting reactive and selling hope when the roster will clearly benefit from a longer view.
Pioli may have that kind of credibility. As we know Mara genuflects when 'The Patriot Way' is mentioned.
Good interview though. The discussion about keeping it in the family, not leaking conversations to the press or even the owner for that matter, and not passively undermining people is the type of problem most organizations face, particularly ones that are struggling.

It's quite possible he was burdened and saddled by the underwhelming meh-ness of Matt Ryan which was a hump he couldn't get over.

Funny thing is Matt Ryan is worlds better then Jones
Rookie QB Y: 61.1% 3440 yds 16/11
I'm down for giving Dimitroff a serious look as well.

I'm interested in him for sure.
Listen to the issues
Work Hard
That's all I ask :-)
Much like Judge, he will probably not be able to bring in his own assistants, advisors and scouting staff
He will be forced to accept a bunch of holdovers- none of which have proved themselves competent
Is there anyway out of this conundrum of meddling management?
We have to hope new rules can be worked out
For one thing, Judge should have a full vote at the Draft table.

Great to hear CB talk about how he and Pepper and Bavaro changed the culture at Cleveland. Just terrific!
I think Pioli would be great as the Giants GM.
Paoli seems like he has his feet on the ground
but can he sniff out talent
What is Paoli's draft record. Does anyone know?
The fact he is Parcells son in law should help
perhaps Bill still wants to help
Good Lord! He makes Gettleman look good
This record is scarry

You've never heard of Justin Houston?
