NFT: TV Brands

lpdcan28 : 12/2/2021 12:50 pm
Looking to get a 55-65" tv and possibly a 32" for a small bedroom. I know sony, samsung, and lg are often considered the best (and more expensive). What about some of the other brands out there like jvc, philips, rca, and magnavox etc.? Some have told me unless I am buying the higher end models of the popular brands, there really shouldn't be much difference? Are extended warranties worth it? I haven't bought a tv in a long time. Any advice with brands and even good places to buy would be appreciated.
Unless budget is an issue

I wouldn't go less than 40" even for the bedroom. 32" is going to feel like a computer monitor when you're laying in bed.
That said, I'd strongly recommend TCL Roku for the bedroom

so that you have all streaming capability baked in, don't need to run any additional wires besides the power cable, etc. Picture quality is surprisingly good (it's not going to compete with high end sets, but it's priced accordingly), and on a smallish screen, a lot of the shortcomings will be barely noticeable.

I just bought a Samsung 55" Q series. Got a good deal at Sam's Club. Picture and Sound are both excellent. But the startup instructions are awful....a single page with hieroglyphic symbols all over it. I guess I'm just old school about those things.

Dear Daughter was here for Thanksgiving and had that Samsung tuned up in no time flat.

For the record, I had a Vizio that crapped out after only about 6 years. Wouldn't buy another one.
I got my older kids

32" Sharp TV's for their college dorm rooms.

perfect size and cheap (under $100), I'll dig up the model if you want.

Depending on the audience for the small bedroom 32" might be fine. My kids, like most kids, are used to watching TV on their phones all day, so a 32" TV (with a Roku) was more than enough.
Whatever you do, don't buy a Vizio SmartCast TV

I bought a 50" for the living room and it has been a total piece of crap. It takes forever to turn on and when turning it off the screen goes blank but the audio continues to play for 4-5 seconds. This useless piece of junk hangs constantly, and in multiple calls to Vizio the first step is to reset to factory defaults. That works and the TV performs better for a day or two but then it starts down the crap road again. In addition, every time you reset it to factory defaults you have to login/re-authorize the apps. It also only has a fixed number of apps and cannot be added to in any way.

About the only good thing I can say about it is that I was able to download a Free Cast Streamer from the App Store for my iPhone and I can stream videos from my phone on the TV. It has been nice to play my grandkids on video on the big screen.

Other then that this TV is a total piece of garbage.

I second TCL Roku for bedroom..

I have them in 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom
I just bought a 70" Samsung for like $600 or something.

Just look around for what you need. 4K, 8K, etc. are only really relevant on larger screens so if you are going smaller I wouldn't get caught up in something like that. HDMI ports, gaming or sports are relevant with refresh rate, etc. are areas you might want to look at. Honestly, most tvs today mark up the price for smart tvs when a $25 fire stick can do much more. I can't speak for all tvs but we've had a visio for like 10 years and it is still great.
I just got a 55" LG G1 OLED for our living room
81_Great_Dane : 12/2/2021 1:34 pm : link
and a 50" Hisense Quantum ULED for the second TV. Hisense and TCL seem like well-reviewed budget brands. I'm staying away from Samsung right now because they won't support Dolby Vision.

Love the LG OLED FWIW. Picture is kind of jaw-dropping.

Moving across country in stages; will be sort of bicoastal for a while. The OLED is staying in L.A. and the Hisense is going directly to the new house in Ohio. Going to Ohio this weekend and will pick it up next week; will report back on how it looks.

In a few years, the next TV will probably be significantly bigger, and maybe 8K. The problem is, my 1937 house isn't built with a space for a screen that big, and neither the basement nor the attic is ready to be a TV room with significant finishing.
there is 4K and everything
ImThatGuy : 12/2/2021 1:35 pm : link
but there is also "HD good-enough"

If you aren't a big enough movie junkie to already know what you want in a TV, then it won't matter. Just get whatever they are pushing at Costco/Best Buy and it will fit your needs.
i love my 55" LG OLED

but my buddy recently looked at buying a new tv and he opted for the Sony OLED. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

And I agree with Gatorade that 32" in the bedroom is too small. I sort of feel that 42" is the minimum these days for a tv.

Get the 65 if you have the room.

Look at Hisense as well. The 700 Hisense will likely be better than the 700 Samsung or LG.
Was wondering about Hisense.
Beezer : 12/2/2021 2:06 pm : link
Seeing those everywhere, and at solid prices.
thumbs up on…

TCL Roku…
Sound
BobOnLI : 12/2/2021 2:15 pm : link
Try to find a TV with good enough sound so you don't need a sound bar. Otherwise, whatever you save on the TV you will spend on auxiliary audio.
1) Cheap is fine, just buy it with a good CC
NoPeanutz : 12/2/2021 2:26 pm : link
2) Get as big as you can fit on the wall. Measure the space on the wall, and that's how big your TV should be. The closest you can get to that space, the happier you'll be.

I like a RokuTV. We have TCLs. But anything you can get at Costco is great, I'm sure.

+1 for Hisense. I have a Hisense ROKU 4K TV and incorporated the Hisense soundbar to it seamlessly. The setup has worked flawlessly in a sun room for 8 months...
We bought a Samsung QLED 55 inch for our Family Room

right before Thanksgiving and love it!

My Father-in-Law watched all the football games between Thanksgiving at Noon until Monday night and give it a thumbs up on Football. Amazing.

It replaced a 45 inch Samsung that is now upstairs with the X-Box and PS2 (yes...PS2 LOL) hooked to it.

Happier than a clam!
I go with Hisense/TCL Roku tvs.

Because I just don't see the value in paying 3 times the price for a TV. I also think their smart tv software is the easiest to use with the widest app support.
Bought the Sony A80J OLED 55" last week
TheMick7 : 12/2/2021 3:53 pm : link
on Amazon for $1398 w/a 5 month payment plan. The picture is unbelievable,it is replacing a Sony 55" LED & there is no comparison. Price has gone up to $1698, but if this interests you, keep an eye out as I bet it will go back down to the price I got it at in the coming weeks!

Just got a 65" Sony A80J and love it. Hung it in the corner of the basement, a nice under TV mount for the sound bar so there's no visible wires, my wife said it's like having a small home theater lol.
As for the extended warranty
bigblue5611 : 12/2/2021 5:04 pm : link
The A80J I got was replacing a 55" Sony 930D I got in 2016. Loved that TV but in the last 6 months to a year it started taking at least two attempts to power on (if turned off for several hours or longer) and upon powering up it would go through the boot up process.

I bought the 5 year protection from Best Buy when I purchased, so a couple months before it was up (which was Sept of this year) I called up the Geek Squad and they ordered the part to fix it. Waited over a month for it and since it hadn't come in they approved me for an in home replacement. I believe I had the option of the 55" Sony X90J for no cost or take $1200 to put towards whatever TV I wanted. I chose the $1200 route and got a little over half off on the OLED at the time I purchased.

In sum, protection package/extended warranty was worth it to me.
I have a 65 inch TCL/Roku QLED 5 series

Paid $620 for it about a year ago.

I'm not a technophile and picture looks great to me.I think it was a terrific value. TV snobs online say its not bright enough, but its in a fairly dark room in my house and works for me. The brighter the room, the brighter the screen you need.

People rave about the 6 series, but its a couple of hundred bucks more.
