NFT: A new Jack Reacher?

Johnny5 : 12/2/2021 4:02 pm
Certainly better than Tom Cruise, at least as a physical match... lol.

I like it... and I like that they are following the storyline closely.

What say you BBI'ers?

I don't know? I'll pass.

I understand star power

But Tom Cruise just never made sense. The trailer looks pretty good and the new guy definitely looks the part. Looking forward to this.

Always wondered why that guy was never in more stuff. One of the funniest characters I've ever seen
Reacher
Csonka : 12/2/2021 4:28 pm : link
I like that this guy is bigger, but Cruise is just a much better actor.

And I hate that it's a full reboot of the original story. I'd rather they move on to the next chapter. Like with Bond movies. They didn't restart every time a new actor took over the role.

I really like Tom Cruise as an actor, but I was disappointed he was chosen for the role. So I never watched the Cruise versions.
Reminds me a little bit of the original

this guy can't act, cruise can. I'll take Cruise, don't care if he doesn't match the physique.
he was good in the first one
oghwga : 12/2/2021 4:57 pm : link
second one was terrible. really terrible. Never read the books. I liked that Tom Cruise wasn't 6 foot 5 and a monster, makes it more fun when he beats guys up and more realistic that people would challenge him. Looks like the show could be fun though.

Agree.
I’ve read most of the Reacher books
mfsd : 12/2/2021 5:47 pm : link
and while I also like Cruise in many roles, didn’t really like him as Reacher.

It wasn’t just his small stature not matching Reacher’s description. Reacher in the books is a more reserved, quiet intensity type, and I didn’t think Cruise was best suited for that kind of character.

Look forward to some new blood in the role
I liked Jack Reacher
Ron from Ninerland : 12/2/2021 5:49 pm : link
Unlike the Mission Impossible movies, the Jack Reacher movies actually had a plot, acting and dialogue. For example only Tom Cruise could have pulled off the bar fight scene. Who cares about his size ? Its just as unrealistic that a fighter pilot or secret agent is five foot zip. The camera works around that.
Actor seems fine
widmerseyebrow : 12/2/2021 5:58 pm : link
I'll reserve judgement until I see an episode.
I also didn't watch
pjcas18 : 12/2/2021 5:58 pm : link
it because of Cruise.

I have read all the Jack Reacher books, and casting Cruise as him might have been good movie marketing sense but it did not match Jack Reacher in any way and basically they just used the name Jack Reacher to gin up interest in a Tom Cruise movie.

Jack Reacher's appearance is everything. it's his persona and what makes him so unique. I like Tom Cruise and usually enjoy his movies and if this one was named something like "MP John Doe" or something not but "Jack Reacher" I may have seen it.

Not sure I'll watch but this one, but this guy fits the Jack Reacher mold a million times more than Cruise.

Cruise as Jack Reacher would kind of be like if in the Lord of the Rings movies they had the Rock play the role of Gollum. Where you know they wanted the Rock somehow tied to it for marketing, but he's such a bad casting decision it immediately makes you think WTF?

I bet you’ll feel differently
UConn4523 : 12/2/2021 6:06 pm : link
if you watched both. This trailer made it seem like a made for TV movie, the actor is terrible. Your example is actually on point because to Rock can’t act and Serkis is a legend.
To Me, This Guy Looks Like My Idea Of Reacher
Dennis : 12/2/2021 6:13 pm : link
I've also read all the books. To me, this guy looks more like how I picture Reacher. Big. I think he's been described by Lee Child as looking like a Linebacker, 250 lbs, 6'4''. Tom Cruise didn't work for me.

Also, the head butt is Reacher's iconic move. It may not, in reality, make sense, or be smart in real life, but it's what Reacher does. It's pure fantasy, I guess, and perhaps poetic license.

I'm 75 years old, 5'9", 165 lbs, and I look like an academic. Reacher is my
fantasy self. He's who I want to be in my next lifetime, not a sensitive Jewish intellectual, but a guy who can kick down a door, and women drool over.
LOL. I sure missed the boat on that this time around.

Yeah, like I said I may find the Cruise version entertaining, he's an entertaining actor, but I just can't get past Reacher.

I've been reading stories about Jack Reacher at a pace of at least one per year since I want to say the late 90's or early 00's. and Reacher is introduced as a massive human being (think offensive lineman - or someone 6' 5" 275 pounds) but wild looking with unkempt hair and unkempt beard just physically menacing. It is the one constant reliable feature of every one of the stories.

Men would look at Reacher and instantly think twice before approaching.

So, because in my head I have a vision of what Jack Reacher looks like I would go in with an immediate negative view of 5'7" Tom Cruise in the role.

I am normally not a book snob, so I can watch movies or shows after reading the books and be fine with them, just not this one.

An example of me doing that (besides Lord of the Rings where I loved the books and movies) was Game of Thrones, I thought they absolutely nailed the casting decisions. Almost all of them very closely matched exactly what I imagined (with very few minor exceptions - one was Cersei Lannister - the actress was fine, but Cersei was supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the realm and I feel like she fell a little short).

I never read the books
santacruzom : 12/2/2021 6:30 pm : link
but I know there was a lot of dissatisfaction over Cruise being cast. I talked about this to someone who'd read the books but didn't treat them classical literature and he just laughed and said, "In the books Jack Reacher once stopped a bullet with his pecs... it's not exactly like they're not being faithful to anything worth being faithful towards."

As much as I enjoyed the books, this is a great line (below):

did

that actually happen? Like, his pecs were really formidable enough to stop a bullet?

LOL. I don't actually recall that happening, but maybe I missed that?
In any case, the books are just fun, and not to be confused with real life.

Well there's the reason why Cruise was cast. He's dyslexic, so he probably read the height as 5'6 and figured he'd be perfect.
Mrs Shofner and I enjoy what we call 'Friday night movies' -
Del Shofner : 12/2/2021 6:42 pm : link
mindless action movies that we watch at home at the end of a long work week. This looks perfect. (Seriously.)

I like the Stones' music being in there - I wonder if that's just the trailer or in the show.

GoT

had good physical castings, but I would sacrifice that for better acting - see Jon Snow and Danny, along with a few of the lesser characters.

yeah, but that's kind of my point, with GoT I was willingly accepting of the characters, even poorly acted, because they physically looked like the mental image I created for each of them. I was more put off by the rush job and plot liberties than I was with the acting.

Obviously with Cruise as Jack Reacher that's not the case.
I get that
UConn4523 : 12/2/2021 7:14 pm : link
but it’s where we disagree, I’d rather the better actor in just about every scenario.
This guy is almost too big
ZogZerg : 12/2/2021 7:28 pm : link
Cruise being so small made it interesting since folks would think he was easy prey. This guy is a monster so you lose that angle.

Plus, TC is a much better actor.

You bring up an interesting point - not everything translates from book to film/tv. It’s why I generally treat the two as separate entities.
I read all the books
section125 : 12/2/2021 8:12 pm : link
and was disappointed that they chose Cruise because of the obvious size discrepancy.
However, I'll give Cruise credit, he did a good job and if you just let the physical differences go from your mind, the movies were fine.

Hell, how many people complained when Russell Crowe was chosen to play Captain Jack Aubrey in "Master and Commander." Aubrey was supposed to be 6'4", 240 lbs, blond hair. Yet he pulled it off admirably.
Cruise was fine the movies were underwhelming though
Eric on Li : 12/2/2021 8:15 pm : link
a series might fit better and that Reacher does look a lot more right, but the trailer didn't seem much better than the movies were.

I can understand that take. I'll get around to watching the Cruise versions at some point. But I was disappointed with picking him for the role. I get totally engrossed in the books I read so it's important for the character to at least somewhat meet the criteria. And Reacher in the book is a giant and imposing figure and that is really a central aspect to the character. It's kind of like Conan. Robert E. Howard Conan was a massive character, primal and ready to do violence in the blink of an eye. It's tough to match what's created in your mind's eye in the stories but the character should at least come close to the physical and emotional characteristics. The Schwarzenegger Conan was close but the Momoa Conan was awful... lol

Prime has done this with a few other movies where they turn the original movie story line into a mini-series. I think they did that with the Mark Wahlberg movie Shooter.
