Questions about defensive lineman holding offensive lineman

M.S. : 12/3/2021 8:02 am

(1) At the snap of the ball, if a D-lineman grabs hold of the shoulder pad of an O-lineman in order to get around him (by yanking him aside), I'm assuming this is NOT a penalty. Is that right?

(2) If an O-lineman starts to drift to one side in order to block for, say, a screen play and a D-Lineman grabs hold of him to impede his progress, I'm assuming this IS a penalty. Is that right?

(3) For you old timers, wasn't there a time when a D-Lineman could grab hold of an O-Lineman under any circumstance and NOT be penalized? Not sure.

Any thoughts, insights much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I've only ever seen it called when the OL

Is trying to block someone else (zone blocking or trying to get to the second level).
Actually, SF in the 2011 SB year

was famous for DL holding OL to allow the LBs to come free. It wasn't called until teams complained about it.

If the DL is the Giants and the OL the Ravens it is an automatic penalty.

Justin Smith was a master of angling in and wrapping the OG so he couldn't switch over and pick up Aldon Smith stunting in. They picked up a ton of sacks that year using this tactic and continued to get away with it even after teams starting complaining.

I remember one of our OL saying something along the lines of "Justin Smith gets away with absolute murder" prior to the NFC championship game.
Pretty much…

…spot on with 1) & 2)

Push-pull is just another technique like ripping or swimming and while it may be a sneaky good technique to hold that zone blocker on the double, it should get flagged.

Most holding inside the arms, think locking onto a chest plate, is not getting called. But, thats why good technique is to have inside position.
We’ll Hammer was called for it in a Super Bowl

after Jessie Armstead intercepted a pass and returned it for 6! Would have changed the whole dynamic of that game IMO.

Yeah, on a play action pass where Hamilton coming off a block tackled the RB that was the object of the fake handoff...changed the entire game.

But yes, to the OP what you wrote is correct.

I do not remember it being called many, many moons ago.

That was a BS penalty and a back breaker, also considering what Fat Tony was doing to QB's that year
remember what he did to Gannon's shoulder after the whistle and he did the same shit to Collins

That season the league specifically made DL holding a focus and it was called a lot all year. If memory serves, Hamilton was either the leading DL for holding penalties or right at the top. so, his hold in the Super Bowl was in line with the rest of that season.

I think the game MAY have gone a little differently had that TD been able to stand up. But, that doesn't mean it was the wrong call.

Was it for tackling a RB or OL. I honestly don't remember. The focus all season, was primarily on DL dragging down OL, though.
Holding is whatever the zebras decide it is.

Contrary to what anyone may think, or what the rule book says, there is no rhyme or reason to it. This is one of the really big things wrong with the NFL. Rules are not enforced consistently.

Part of the problem is that you could call holding on just about every play, and that just isn't going to work either. So in actual practice, it is left up to official discretion, and they are inconsistent as hell, not to mention the fact that they don't see everything either. Trouble is, some zebras just seem to have better eyesight than others, if you know what I mean.

Funny but my brother in law, the Pats fan, swears the Giants OL was holding on the Tyree catch. I tell him there is holding on EVERY play and that they invented the tuck rule just for TB12
It's OK...
