Letting the ball go inside the 10 on a punt

BestFeature : 12/4/2021 12:38 am
Was it inside the 10 or the 5? That used to be the standard unless letting the ball go would obviously have it downed before it rolled into the end zone. I haven't seen that in forever. All balls are now caught. Did special teams strategy change on the part of the punting team, did punters get better, did gunners get better?

Nowadays, if you let the punt drop at the seven, odds are it's going to get downed at the one or two. It's not even a discussion that, given the alternative, you'd rather take the ball at your seven.

I suspect the new rule is to let it go inside the 5. At that point, you just have to take your chances, hope it takes a crazy bounce sideways or back upfield, or it shoots into the endzone so quickly the gunners don't have time to react.

You also have to accept that, despite whatever your plans are, some teams have punters and gunners that are going to put the ball exactly where they want, no matter what you do.
