Id be all for it but I'd be surprised if they moved on from Jones. Nothing would inspire hope like seeing the new GM come in and trade Barkley and Jones for a few second day selections. By all accounts they are exceptional young men but it's impossible ke to envision them being a part of a successful turnaround here.
but not for anything close to what he’s been paid.
When he’s healthy (big if) he’s better than a bottom tier QB I think. He’s playing pretty well this year actually.
I think he’ll fetch a 2 year 30M deal with a lot of it based on playing time.
I wouldn’t touch him for the Giants. He’s a guy you take a flier on if you’re convinced you’re good QB play away from making noise, like the Saints for instance.
LOL give me a break, Jones is a better QB then he is for sure
but I'd rather go with Jones and a low cost veteran and Fromm. We need high draft picks the next two years. 20 and 21 have yielded some good players. We need more of them and a QB. If they hit on the next two drafts I think the losing cloud over the Giants will start to dissipate. Talented young team, young OL with a rookie QB (talented) contract is a good place to be in today's NFL with a quality HC.
That's why I think the rest of the season is more about Judge than Jones. It will take a huge amount of faith by Mara in his HC.
On a 1 year prove it deal to push Jones, Garoppolo might take that gamble.
He's not likely to get an automatic starter job, so his best bet is to take the "Tannehill" lottery ticket in a job he could legitimately get the job out of default quickly. Play well, he'd likely get some money out of it from Giants or other team.
If Judge is still here, it's a reasonable play. Judge knows him well from NE and if Judge's job comes on the line in Year 3 he can't play around with Jones' feelings and excuses like this the Daniel Jones BBI Fan Club keeps giving.
RE: LOL give me a break, Jones is a better QB then he is for sure
Keep Daniel Jones through his 5th year option (which actually will be cheaper than market rate is the post-2018 CBA formula).
For pre-2018 picks the Tender for Jones would have been an average of the top 10 QB salaries. But now the formula is based on Pro Bowl selections, and if there's none then it will be an average of the 3rd through 20th highest salaries.
Here's a quote to an article about it:
Quote:
Performance now dictates the option-year salaries. With two or more Pro Bowl selections on the original ballot during the first three seasons of contracts, the fifth-year salary is the franchise tender, which is the average of the five highest salaries, for a player's position in the fourth year of his contract. One Pro Bowl selection on the original ballot during the first three seasons of deals puts the fifth-year salary at the transition tender, which is average of the 10 highest salaries, for a player's position in the fourth year of his contract.
Participating in 75 percent of offensive or defensive plays, whichever is applicable, in two of the first three seasons of deals or an average of at least 50 percent playtime in each of the first three seasons sets the fifth-year salary at the average of the third through 20th highest salaries at a player's position.
Based on 2021 salaries Daniel Jones 5th year will be about $14.75 million. I don't think a better salary for a comparable QB would be available.
Then, who knows, if he actually performs well with better players by 2023, then the Giants can extend him.
RE: LOL give me a break, Jones is a better QB then he is for sure
the whole point is play well in big games. He's better than Jones but how much.
He at least got there. Among vet starters, JG's contract is 12th. The only vet starters below him are Big Ben, Brady, Carr and Dalton. Everyone below that is either a second stringer or on a rookie contract. I don't see how fans who have watched Jones stumble and bumble his way for the last two seasons can be criticizing another team's qb. JG is 30-12 as a starting qb.
I would do this in the right situation (low $$ contract)
No pressure if there isn't a ton of money invested in Jimmy G and no draft pick scholarship when the next QB is ready, no ground swell of support or loyalty to keep him as the starter.
makes a lot of sense. Kind of like a Tyrod Taylor to Justin Herbert torch passing.
as long as the contract is right. Jimmy G is better than Jones and can be a quality stopgap while the Giants amass draft capital to get a franchise QB. If you build a proper team around Jimmy G, you could even be a playoff contender (like the 49ers were)
I know some of the writers have said that, but don't think that's accurate from what I am looking at. I think it's based on some salaries that surely won't be on the books in 2022, like Goff making $30 million, Wilson making $37 million and Tannehill making $39 million.
He’s proven he’s not a good QB. So, even if you think he’s better than Jones he solves exactly zero problems. One not good QB for another. You might as well stick with who you’ve got. JG offers nothing. A not good QB with no upside.
Jimmy G has had a powerful Oline, good to great run game, a top wr and TE, and the rest of the receivers are solid. With all that he has looked average at best. I can't imagine how bad he'd look here. I'm not a big fan of Jones, but I'd take him over Jimmy G any day.
this offseason the giants will be looking for a new OC
the coaches and front office should go and get a quarterback they think can excel in whatever that system is. i don't particularly want garopallo (certainly not for 20+ million a year), and he seems like a douchebag, but he can't possibly be worse than jones.
i think jones should be gone either way. in 3 years he's only demonstrated that can't throw touchdowns unless he's turning the ball over at a record clip, and has also shown that he can't stay healthy for more than 9-10 games in a row.
but sadly, even if the coaches want jones gone, i could see the meddlesome and clueless owner blocking it.

I think you get the best QB you can regardless of system and tailor the system to the QBs strengths, as well as challenging him to do some stuff outside his comfort zone.
The genius of Bill Belichick. Remember when people (not tied to football) said Bill wanted Jimmy G but Kraft forced him to keep Brady? I seriously doubt any of that was true.
Yea Jones looks like he is finished in year 3. He did not make any "big leap"; he showed he still was he was ie someone who throws horrible ints and otherwise tries to play hero ball and ends up losing games by either fumbling or throwing to the other teams defense end.
Jimmy G does not do that so he wins. trade a jones for a 6th and be done with it.
And what the heck is it around here with like: contract specifics and finding the next Pat Mahomes and finding a "franchise QB" for the next 10 years etc.... The point is to win a SB. It is not to win the next ten with the next Mahomes ; to win it with a guy on his rookie contract. you have a good QB available; yours sucks ; grab them and move on . Next up is oline and head coach....why make it harder than it needs to be?
Bring him in on a one year prove it contract to provide serious competition for DJ who I believe will be on the team next year.
Why would he sign a prove it contract when other QB needy teams would easily throw $15 M+ at him?
DJ makes $2-$3 million so if you want a stop gap, it doesn't make sense to sign a guy like Jimmy who gets hurt often, it's less mobile and only marginally makes the team better. Spend the money we don't have on other positions.
Jones will have a cap hit of ~8M next year, fully guaranteed. The only way to realize a cap savings on Jones is to trade him before his roster bonus of 3.2 is due (presumably the first day of the league year).
That would save the Giants about 4M (roster bonus + salary), with a dead cap hit of 4M.

That is still less than the dead cap hit of Golden tate. Hold your nose; pay; and move on.

No one is man but you have to start somewhere. So we should start it at the line--even though the key position is already in place Thomas-- and just leave Jones in at the most important position and hope something falls into our lao at a later time? I get it you like Jones too bad he sucks.
Can he take a hit. Jimmy G cannot. He is brittle and our O line will break him.
It's not going to be the same o line. We obviously need to trade away some of this dead weight on defense. Bradberry, Jackson, Dex Lawrence, Peppers; not to mention offense Jones / Barkley. With that and the 2 1st round picks you should see some improvement in the oline and Jimmy G can get some protection.
Build the line before considering a new qb. Picking up jones 5th year option at 21mm isn’t a bad option at all. It’s not 35 or 40 it’s 21. It’s lower tier starter money. Build the line give jones another year or even 2 to prove he’s the guy behind a better OL. After year 5 go ahead and draft a qb or sign a free agent if you feel jones isn’t a right fit. At that point in time we’ll have cap space and theoretically a good OL. If you don’t pick up an option and he has a good year you’ll have to either lock him up to a big deal or franchise tag him going to the Dak route.
RE: RE: LOL give me a break, Jones is a better QB then he is for sure
Oh OK. You love hearing about Darnold Mr. Know-it-all Uconn... Guess who else is playing with a bottom 5 offensive line...yea you guessed it S Darnold. Does he get another chance?

pff. I'd rather just start Glennon for a year or two. He's had far fewer starts than Jones and is a lot cheaper of a stop gap as long as we are convinced no one can do anything behind this line anyway. This was Jones prove it year. And thus far all it was was a continuation of last year ; which by everyone's admission was a disappointment. What has changed? Where was Jones big leap? jones is a waste at 20 mil since no one can do anything anyway and he is a waste of QB if this line is improved and we're stuck with a bad QB. Which is what Jones is a bad QB. Either way I hope he played his last game as a Giant.

The Giants saved money by cutting Tate, the Giants save no money by cutting Jones.
There’s no incentive to cut him this offseason, and they will not.
He might get traded. If it’s before his roster bonus is paid, they save about 4M, but even if it’s after they save about 1M.
I'd agree with this. Definitely think Garopolo would be an improvement, but not for what he's being paid

I don't have metrics or anything. But I feel if you put Jimmy G behind our line without a receiver like Deebo Samuel he would stink.
I've seen enough of Jimmy G making dumb decisions and throwing balls up to be picked with a better supporting cast.
Just my opinion.
If the Giants want a stop gap, it should be for much less then that.
Jones isn't a better QB than Garoppolo. Jimmy G is 30-12 as a starter in the NFL with an NFC Championship
Jones upside isn’t much better on that front with playing style.

Garoppolo is actually having a nice year. And by every statistical measure, he's better than Jones over his career.
I could live with JG as a short-term solution.

I am kind of like this as well. Jimmy G is about as middling as it comes for an NFL QB as he plays just well enough to keep a starting job.
That would save the Giants about 4M (roster bonus + salary), with a dead cap hit of 4M.

It has to be part of the discussion. He has missed time every year so far. Same with Jimmy G
Just imagine the patriots ... why should we draft Drew Bledsoe ; what will he do on this shitty patriots team that will never win anything anyway.
Look people you have to start somewhere and a QB change and a GM retirement/firing whatever is a good place to do it.
