6th rd pick RB Gary Brightwell

Adam G in Big D : 12/5/2021 11:59 am
University of Arizona graduate has 1 carry this season despite Saquon missing games with injury.

Brightwell was also a kick returner in college but has not been used to return kicks for the Giants despite injuries to this unit as well.

I saw Brightwell on the kick coverage team last week. You can't tell me that they drafted this kid in the 6th round to cover kick returns.

What gives with Gary Brightwell? Is he in the coaches doghouse? Being protected for when Barkley leaves? A player the coaching staff never wanted but the front office drafted anyway?

He’s a 6th round pick

And 7th round picks are usually special teamers at best if they even make the team.

Thought Judge didn't care about such things as where one was drafted... except look at Price and Solder.
Actually he was drafted

as a special teams demon.

Actually he was (drafted to cover kicks - along with other specials). Right or wrong - that is the reality.

I have no issues with using a 6th round pick on a guy like that BUT if we do, then we don't trade a pick for Crossen AND sign Ebner. Specials (outside of a filed goal kicker) isn't as important as they once were due to kickers getting a lot more touchbacks and most teams going for it more often on fourth down. Most teams don't have 3 players on their roster whose specialty is specials especially if none of them are returners.

That said, if you devote that many people to specials, they need to be lights out. Outside of Graham, ours have been underwhelming.
The Giants even said when he was drafted that it was . . . .

mainly his talent on specials that attracted them, so it may well be they main reason. Booker is serviceable, I'd like to see Penny get a few more carries, even if Saquon is Tarzan having turned into Jane.

the Giants literally said immediately after the draft that he was drafted to play special teams first and foremost.
The Giants coaching staff and Head Coach

are even less flexible than most NFL staffs if that's possible when it comes to working young players into the lineup. Brightwell could be Terrell Davis but it's obvious the only way he'll get a chance is if there's no one else to play.

That's how Victor Cruz got on the field. There was no else left to play, every other WR was hurt. Most people consider Tom Coughlin a HOF coach and most people say the coaches see practice and they know who the best players are. Well Coughlin wanted to cut Cruz after 2011 training camp and Cruz was an All Pro in 2011 - not the Pro Bowl. All Pro. Cruz played 2011 at a HOF level. It's no exaggeration to say he was one of the top 5 players on a Super Bowl winning team. Maybe top 3 with Eli and JPp. Tom Coughlin saw him every day in practice and didn't even want him on his team, let alone in his starting line up.

This coaching staff is even worse. I want to like Joe Judge but sticking with Solder and Hernandez who are two of the worst OLs in the entire NFL and have no contracts for next year is NFL HC malpractice. If Judge is gone when this year ends so be it. There's no excuse for what he's doing with the OL.

"This coaching staff is even worse."

Bradshaw was a late round pick...

I know he fell due to character issues, but none the less. TC kept him on the bench for quite a bit of 2007. Then when they finally got over themselves and played him, well, we all know how that turned out.
6th Round Pick?
Samiam : 12/5/2021 2:01 pm : link
The Giants had Barkley coming off a season ended injury and Booker was signed. Maybe they figured Penney would play. That said, RB Khalil Herbert was taken a few picks after Brightwell and he produced nicely for the Bears when their Runninhg backs were all hurt. If they drafted Brightwell to be ST without regard to the need at the running back position, it would be another stupid move by the front office. This is aside from their passing on Trey Smith in the 6th who would have immediately become the best interior lineman on the team.

Almost every guy on that list is playing because of injuries and you have Peart on that list who is not playing which is the point.

Pretty sure Judge made the point of saying he was for specials. I agree you have to have players that have a position. Perhaps they hit on a OL with that pick. It is a trend and a alarming one with the later picks.

Not always true with running backs
Look up the historical success rate
JonC : 12/5/2021 3:17 pm : link
for 6th round picks in the NFL. It's probably single digits. Low expectations should be kept accordingly.

RBs have much less of a learning curve when coming into the league than pretty much any other position. A 6th round pick should be able to play in dire circumstances. I'm not saying Brightwell would be *good*, but they can't even get this fucking guy on the field?
