He is also ranked 33/37 out of QBs this year by PFF if that means anything to any of you. What can Giants fans learn from Trevor Lawrence's rookie year? Drafting a supremely talented quarterback will not suddenly turn the team into a winner. The desire to replace the quarterback after every losing season is rooted in the desire for instant gratification. Naturally, fans desire to win now, so they rationalize that if they pick a QB who is "the guy" or a "franchise QB" then he will "elevate" the awful supporting cast and turn the horrendous roster into a winner overnight. This distorted line of thinking is rooted in clichés and myths rather than observations based on empirical evidence. Am I saying that the Jaguars should have passed on Trevor Lawrence? Of course not. Yes, you absolutely should pick a generational talent(like Lawrence is supposed to be) if they come along, but you do not make the fringe QB pick(i.e. Daniel Jones) without a serviceable supporting cast in place. This roster has innumerable holes and there are no clear cut generational talents(like a Trevor Lawrence) among the quarterbacks of this draft class. Those fans who are clamoring for Kenny Pickett or Matt Corral should look at Trevor Lawrence and consider whether that would truly be a wise move.
My plan would be if we took a quarterback in the draft was to have him and Jones compete for the starting position or have the rookie sit for a year, decline 5th year option, let Jones play out his rookie deal, and release him if he continues down this trajectory.

As I said elsewhere I would trade up to latter part of Round 1 and draft Desmond Ridder and let him sit until he is ready
2. There is no way to know how a QB from minor league professional all star team will handle playing for a terrible NFL team. Lawrence, Haskins, Fields, Jones etc from Clemson, OSU, Alabama have very little competitive film to view before they get drafted.
David Carr most likely could have been. Going back further Archie Manning likely could have ended up in the hall of fame if he had come out a year earlier and Pittsburgh took him first overall instead of playing on those awful Saints teams. Teams often give up on quarterbacks too early, such as Tannehill in Miami who has looked like a different quarterback with a better supporting cast. Whether or not these teams ruin the QB himself or not, they very rarely win many games when they throw a young QB into a horrible team. Just look at the Jets. By drafting a QB early a team throws away the opportunity to fix other holes on the team. Most of the league's top QBs came into good situations: Mahomes, Rodgers, Prescott, ect... The drafting a QB every couple of years strategy is like playing a slot machine. These fans think they are going to strike gold and the team will suddenly be great but this is essentially never the case.
Recently, I felt that belonged to Tannehill.
Over the past 20+ years, I would have gone Tim Couch. The Browns were dreadful and he was a good kid coming out.
I always wonder about Alex Smith. Intelligent, accurate, much more athletic than you would think. Had a few big seasons when he got a decent coordinator or some surrounding talent, but spent most of his (really pretty long) career getting his teeth kicked in on bad teams.
While I totally agree with the OPs point, I do think there should be a qualifier here. There have been good rookie/young QBs who quickly turned around a franchise.
What people on this board occasionally seem to forget or ignore is how rare those are. In the Giants what, 75 years history, they have NEVER had one. Even Giant success stories like Simms and Eli took years to develop. If the Giants draft a QB this offseason it's a signal that the Giants will be tearing down the roster (again) and likely losing for (at least) another 2-3 years. That might be the right call, but boy oh boy would I not be looking forward to it.
it seems we're now in the latter category. our team really sucks. we should grab 2 studs with our 2 first round picks.
