NFT: What's the MOST 80s movie?

Producer : 12/5/2021 11:19 pm
I watched Working Girl last night.

That film is verrrry 80s.

Crazy hair. Ridiculous make up. Fluffy dresses. Ludicrous Wall Street plotline.

I watched Cocktail a while back. That was pretty 80s too.

I asked my wife. She said Desperately Seeking Susan.
Last American virgin?

is up there. " Yes, it's a B-movie, and at times it feels like a protracted episode of Knight Rider, the A-Team or the aforementioned Miami Vice. But is that a bad thing?"

It's an 80s thing.

Valley Girl gets another vote. Nicolas Cage's first film. This film is blatently every 80's stereotype you can think off.

Scarface - I'd also put forth Scarface. Coke, guns, Miami Vice outfits.

Miami Vice- same as Scarface

Starts as a typical comic teenage let’s get laid movie, turns serious in second half with a soul robbing hard punch in the gut ending. Not sure what the 80s is but does that describe it?
Breakfest Club

imo
Red Dawn- Entire social political backdrop to the movie

80's hair cuts- Fighting a rebel war in designer jeans
first one I thought of

was Weird Science.

Fast Times & Sixteen Candles are great ones as well.
Red Dawn
NoPeanutz : 12/6/2021 10:25 am : link
or maybe Ferris Bueller. But any quintessential 80s movie should have a gratuitous antiCommie victory lap- which is what makes it so cringy and anachronistic. So maybe Rocky 4?
Breakfast Club

WarGames
WarGames is a great pick

It fits two classic '80s themes - the advent of home computers and Cold War conflict.

spillover from one decade to the next. To me, there's a lot of Fast Times that's more evocative of the 70s than the 80s. The John Hughes movies are more of a snapshot of 80s culture IMO.
Some others:
Rivers Edge, Wall Street, Secret of My Success, Karate Kid, Teen Wolf, Heathers, St. Elmo's, Lost Boys, Revenge of the Nerds.

Fast Times was based on writer Cameron Crowe’s experience as an undercover high school student in the late 70s, so that makes sense.

And Top Gun are up there. The classic snobs vs slobs, where the slobs win but at a cost, big hair, awesome overly done soundtracks and hateable bad guys.
As a child of the 80s

Going from 8-18 that decade, this thread is quite a walk down memory lane. The first movie I thought of when I saw the thread title was Working Girl and agree with a lot of the others mentioned. I still can hardly believe that Jeff Bridges was both the hot football star from Against All Odds AND The Dude in The Big Lebowski.

for workplace age, Working Girl (comedy) and Wall Street (serious).
I don't know if I really settle on just one
Matt M. : 12/6/2021 3:45 pm : link
But, a number that immediately come to mind as both representative of the 80s and tied to the 80s:

Top Gun
Back to the Future
Karate Kid
Fast Times
Sixteen Candles
Breakfast Club (these are the two most iconic Hughes films, in my opinion)
Rocky IV
Wall Street
Goonies
Die Hard
First Blood/Rmabo: First Blood Part II
Ferris Beuller
Gremlins
Dirty Dancing
Stand By ME
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Porky's
Police Academy
Footloose
Big
Do the Right Thing

I know Working Girl seems to represent the 80s in terms of the hair, the office culture, etc. but it is not one that immediately came to mind.

I would love to pick a John Cusack movie, because I think of him as an iconic 80s actor, but I'm not sure any of the films are quite there.
