Right now, this is the worst organization in the NFL, maybe even worse than the Jets. At 67, I am fully aware of what happened from 64-79 and how it took the intervention of Pete Rozelle to get us back on track. The fact John Mara has failed to learn from the mistakes his father made makes me feel I may be very old before I ever see another Super Bowl win. This is simply a terrible organization that does not seem to have a clue what to do.
Going back to when DG came in, he said in his first presser that fixing the OL was his top priority. He has failed miserably on that score. He drafted Saquon and I had no issue with that even though I posted in BBI many times that I thought Quentin Nelson should be our pick. I made a comparison to what GY did in ‘88 and ‘89 to fix our OL then. Saquon is now, unfairly, getting a lot of blame. But, if you are going to draft a guy like Saquon or a top rated QB, you better get some guys who can actually block. In that sense, Eli had it good because EA had drafted Diehl in 2003, Snee in 2004, signed O’Hara as a FA in 2003 and McKenzie in 2005. Eli had the advantage of a good line and, from the start, we could run the ball with Tiki. That’s how you build an offense.
I don’t think in my 60 years as a Giants’ fan I have been so depressed. I have zero confidence in this owner to fix this, to remove himself from football related decisions and hire the right man with total football autonomy. I hate Jerry Jones but I give him credit for handing over football authority to Will McClay who has done a great job. The sad part again, like we wasted the last 7 years of Eli’s career, is that we will never know if DJ was the guy because he has a terrible OL, save Thomas, and wide receivers who have zero ability to stay healthy. You do not spend money on a guy like Golladay. You spend it on building your OL. You draft to build the OL. We had shots at Slater and Darrisaw…instead we took Toney who may have talent but seems to be taking health lessons from Shepard.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. John Mara has failed to learn from the massive errors his father made and we, as Giants fans, are paying a massive price as a result. Maybe it’s time for another plane flying a banner of “10 years of lousy football”.
or, at least it feels that way right now
Rozelle got involved because the Giants ownership was split 50-50 between the Mara brothers, who did not see eye to eye on who to hire for GM. Rozelle stepped in to act as an intermediary to get both to agree to accept George Young. It was acting as an intermediary between two feuding owners specific to one hiring decision. He did not jump in to save the franchise because they were losing.

They need to step in to protect John Mara from the man in the mirror. LOL
Ha, your post could easily fit in this thread!

This is true. The NFL was doing just fine in the 70s with a terrible Giants team. Rozelle forced George Young on the feuding Mara owners, not because anyone knew George Young would be a franchise saver, but because the feuding Mara brothers couldn't agree on anyone as a general manager. So Rozelle unintentionally saved the Giants. As a matter of fact, Rozelle laughed out loud when George Young drafted Phil Simms with his first pick as Giants GM IIRC
Perhaps I am envious of those who have taken up other hobbies, spent more time with the kids, or take losses like normal people.
This stuff impacts me as if I am part of the team. Clearly worse as the players get their paycheck and the owners have their team regardless of the state.
Rudderless is the best word because in addition to getting it all wrong for so many years, there is no one who has any idea.
We laughed at the Lions, Jets, Browns for so much stink, we are right there with them.
At 68 years old I have joined this thread as one of the old folks wishing for something positive to happen soon as I may not see another Super Bowl appearance, as well. That's inexcusable for the largest city in the US and inexcusable to have ownership not have a clue how to run this franchise.
We are the Least of the NFC East and that should not happen and have been for years. Why can't ownership not understand this? Or do they not care as the stadium seats are bought and paid for in advance?
Young and old we bitch in unison on this site, and I feel at my age it's to no avail. No one is listening except us.
After preliminaries Eddie met with Wellington and asked for time to put together a package to keep them in NY. Wellington categorically agreed. Eddie (fast Edgar) later found out that Tim was, at that moment) signing the deal that took them to ny.
Eddie was madder over the lie than losing the team... we sat watching a lead turned silver on Oak Island (not the treasure hunting Oak Isl.) and hatched hatching...Lyndsay wanted Eddie (a graduate engineer and builder of Howland Hook, The River Cafe, Thr Red Hook Marine Terminal etc etc) to oversee the reconstruction of Yankee Stadium. Eddie agreed, provided Wellington got the heaven ho...And that's why you chumps traveled to The Yale bowl for several years.
I met Wellington many years later at a hangout on first Avenue (Jimmy Neary's), He had given Jimmy a superbowl ring to display. Regulars Gene Tunney and Frank GGifford were not there that night and I never told Wellington the story.
..
I always thought the story one of the Maras (I cant remember if it was Wellington or Tim) wanted George Young. But, they pretended to have Rozelle pitch it to the other Mara so it would not be like it was coming from their warring family member.
Right.....and it's because he knew it was coming. He made the announcement and heard the booing. But TV (I assume ESPN) had not yet returned from commercial.
So he did it again for TV, knowing the boos were coming.

not the Giants pick. Before Rozelle stepped in, the two Maras weren't considering Young so ya he saved the franchise.

from truebluelarry's "Climbing the Mountain":
"Wellington Mara had received a recommendation from Bobby Beathard about his director of scouting, George Young. Wellington was familiar with Young’s detailed reports on college and pro players, and told Rozelle that he wanted Young, but that he couldn’t suggest anyone to Tim because it would be automatically rejected. Wellington told Rozelle that the Young recommendation had to come from him.
Rozelle told Tim Mara that he needed to choose between Young and Yale Athletic Director and former Cleveland Browns quarterback Frank Ryan. Tim said, “I had Frank Gifford check out Young for me. He called Bobby Beathard and got a glowing report, and he told me that he was definitely the man.”

I do have a soft spot in my heart for Tim Mara. He was the one who got sick of all the losing and opposed Wellington in every thing to do with the operation of the Giants. It was war and ended with George Young joining as GM.
I wonder if there's someone among the Tisch's who could reprise Tim's role in 1979..
Tim probably had a valid point as it was Wellington who tended to do all the hiring. Point is that George was recommended by Pete and was given complete autonomy. That has to happen again. John is incompetent…IMO.
