The NHL and NHLPA have come to an agreement to not have players participate in the 2022 Winter Olympic men's hockey tournament in Beijing, multiple sources told @wyshynski
. https://es.pn/3mrnBuv
In China.
If I was in the NHL as much as I'd like to represent my country I'm not sure the risk is worth it.
They should probably postpone the Olympics a year or who knows last year this time it seemed like 2022 was safe.
1. slow, but also lacks agility
2. decent to average shot, but takes forever to take it
3. rarely activates with the play offensively (spun as a positive = stay at home defenseman)
4. takes long shifts because it's easier to stay on the ice, away from the play like usual than to skate over to the bench for a change
5. when added up by a teammate my time in the penalty box from 2000 - 2011 (when they changed sites) was more than a 40 hour work week spent in the box
6. Decent shot blocker (mainly due to #1 above).
7. Very few goals, but also very few assists, but good plus minus (mostly due to #1 and #3 above, plus our goalie is good)
I think I'm a lock for the team.
I do hope they go with all college kids this time as opposed to the journeyman approach like last Olympics. Though I was overly critical last time, I met one of the players, he coaches my daughter, and he's an incredible person and I hope if they don't go all college he plays again this year, but he's in his 30's.
no they don't, just not NHL players.
I don't have his backhand that regularly beats Carey Price, but otherwise in my prime, he's my NHL comparison.

Wow, so the olympics now have to go back to how they were originally designed as amateurs only.

No, he is not. Otherwise, he would have included "laughing all the way to the bank" as one of his hockey attributes.

I believe so but also SHL, KHL, La Liga, etc.
The testing in China is going to be out of control for the Olympics.
Strange situation as China loosed this plague on the world and now there are problems with people, athletes, media and spectators alike, getting in to China for the games. Still with more than 5 and half million COVID deaths reported world wide and less than 5,000 C19 deaths reported in China, who can argue with the totalitarian measures the Chinese Communist Party uses to control the spread of the virus in their country?
I think these will be very strange Olympic games.

I still have mine too. unfortunately the tuuks are trashed and I already replaced them twice so the shop told me there is nowhere for them to drill new holes and install new ones so they are now usable only as a relic/memory. lol.
Canada, USA, Finland the favorites IMO.

Recorded it and just watched it. Wild finish (pun intended). Fins dominated the first 10 -12 minutes up 1-0. US controlled play from there on out up 3-1 with 3 minutes to go in the game then took a 5 minute match penalty for a check to the head. Fins scored 3 pp goals on it- 2 in regulation and then the game winner in OT. Red Savage who took the penalty will most likely be suspended for at least the 1st game of the tourney, it was a really bad hit.

Yeah really entertaining game in Jersey today. At one point barely 4 minutes in 3 #1 the overall picks had scored- Jack, Connor Mac and Nico. Devs overcome an absolutely horrific missed call that put Edmonton up 5-4 in the 3rd. On a delayed penalty the Devs clearly controlled the puck once (Hamilton)and then Jack may not have totally controlled it but got enough if the puck to blow the whistle before Edmonton scored.

Hamilton definitely controlled it, and they blow the play dead on the Hughes touch 90% of the time.
That was ridiculous. Fun game.
Hughes is really good. Devils are a fun team to watch.
it is expected to be double digit negative degrees (Fahrenheit).
Not sure why they have a 6pm (CT) puck drop other than because it's a Saturday, but whoever thought a night outdoor game in Minnesota in January was a good idea is a moron.

Yeah that's nuts. Isn't the winter classic usually like a 1pm puck drop? I know the huge diehards love the concept of outdoor hockey but the winter classic really strikes me as an event much better watched from my easy chair. I love going out to the stadium/arena for any sport, there's nothing like being there. However paying astronomical money to sit there in frigid conditions to watch ants skating around hundreds of feet away? Pass.
it's usually a day game, but I can't remember when it's been a Saturday. At least have it in Dallas or somewhere that isn't known for their cold if you have it as a night game.
My beer league team played on the ice at Fenway, and it was cool, sort of a novelty, and then I went to a game there. We went to Frozen Fenway - which was an NCAA tourney with Maine, UNH, BC and I forget the 4th school maybe Northeastern. the site lines were terrible. the only decent views were in the RF upper deck seats, which were unprotected from the elements and like you said, the players are like ants.
if you get it in a place like last year in Lake Tahoe or Nashville or somewhere that isn't frigid and you can tail gate and enjoy the atmosphere even with a poor view of the game I could see it being a draw, but I wouldn't go tomorrow with free tickets.
good point, I thought the players wore eye black to help with that. Either way I wonder if the glare wouldn't be preferable to below zero temps.
Between injuries and COVID MTL is basically playing with an AHL team plus Suzuki and Caufield.
Evans and Romanov join forwards Brandon Baddock, Paul Byron, Laurent Dauphin, Mike Hoffman, Artturi Lehkonen and Tyler Toffoli in the COVID-19 protocol, along with defensemen Louie Belpedio, Ben Chiarot, Joel Edmundson, Gianni Fairbrother, Jeff Petry and Chris Wideman, and goaltenders Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau.

I know what Dach was thinking too, don't let him get inside position and get a good look at the net - keep him to the outside where he's harmless, but as I watched this play unfold I could see Makar was setting him up.
I don't even really blame Dach, if he plays the tight turn, Makar likely continues to the center and gets a good look.
Not sure how best to defend that - if it's me and the way I play D in beer league, I back all the way into the net and basically play second goalie. lol

I love these type of stories. That's the one thing about Baseball and Hockey. No matter how much money these guys make it's always so heartwarming to see debuts mid season when they get that call up. Seeing how excited the parents and family gets you realize how much goes into it from the times these kids are little.
Shit, the commitment and sacrifices my parents and family made were crazy and I barely played in a D3 college. And that was nothing compared to what some of these elite player families do.
redirect vs kick - ( New Window )
Games are being called elsewhere because of Covid, yet the Rangers continue to play all these games now with Igor and Panarin.
No method to this madness at all, other than NYR looks to be on pace to get 3 weeks off in February while the Islanders and others play 2 out of every 3 days
The Canadiens played the Panthers last week with 4 or 5 NHL contract players. The rest were AHL players.
I figured most teams that game would have been canceled but I guess with the border crossing being a big unknown for the foreseeable future they decided just play the game.
the next day after that game they announced MTL was shut down for a week. LOL. they were ok to play that game, but not the next day? it's so random and what I'll say convenient (from a science standpoint at least).
He 100% redirected that intentionally....absolutely agree with you

He 100% redirected that intentionally....absolutely agree with you
Listen I have no love for the Rangers but if thats not a kicking motion I don't know what is. Soccer players kick with the inside of their foot all the time. Turning your skate is re-directing the puck, swinging your leg back is a kicking motion I don't care if its with your toes or inside of the foot.
and it's maybe semantics, but I could buy an argument that this isn't a kicking motion, his skate never left the ice and he really turned his skate to redirect the puck toward the net.
My issue is I don't think you should be able to do this.
Incidental contact with a skate, sure. that can count, but intentional redirection should not be allowed.
the red text are injured players.
The San Jose Sharks have placed Evander Kane on 'unconditional waivers' and are set to terminate his contract for breach of contract and the NHL's COVID-19 protocols
GREENWICH, Conn. -- A Connecticut 10th-grade hockey player has died after falling to the ice and being cut on the neck by the skate of another player during a game, school officials and police said.
The accident occurred Thursday as the junior varsity team at the Brunswick School, a college preparatory school for boys in Greenwich, played St. Luke's School, a private co-educational school from New Canaan.
St. Luke's identified the player Friday as Teddy Balkind. He fell to the ice and the other player was unable to stop and collided with him, Greenwich Police Capt. Mark Zuccerella said Friday.
Brunswick Head of School Thomas Philip said in a statement that Balkind suffered a cut to his neck. He said those who were at the game described the play as "entirely normal and unremarkable in the game of hockey."
"I want to commend our medical, coaching and security staff for all that they did in the most terrible of circumstances to sustain the boy until the ambulance arrived," Philip wrote.

MTL with a -54 goal differential is second worst to Arizona (-55).
I thought it would be bad, but not this bad. the amount of injuries has been laughable, but it's not just that.
Other than Arizona they won't catch anyone. Ottawa is 2 points ahead of MTL in the standings (they are just ahead of ARI), but OTT has 6 games in hand on MTL.
I know tanking isn't really possible in the NHL, but any of the top 3 this year and next year can help turn a franchise around.
Shane Wright and Connor Bedard (though I don't love his height) would be a good start, lol.
Only leak I've heard is that Bobby Ryan did not make it. I was hoping he did after his "famous" snub in 2014. He was 26 then, now he's 34.
If you want to understand the frustration some of the players feel, that's it exemplified. You miss one Olympics for whatever reason (like Ryan in 2014), and then the NHL doesn't participate (2018) and then you miss your window.
