How about Jimmy G

BleedBlue : 12/23/2021 8:25 pm
How about a trade for Jimmy G in the offseason? He is playing well. He has NE ties.

He wont cost much, maybe a third rounder. Still only 30. Might be a nice stop gap that a. Allows for us to win a few more games so fans dont start diving off bridges. B. Buys us time to find a future franchise guy in next years draft.

I certainly think he is better than jones. He is having a solid year.

Thoughts?

$27M cap hit next year

Ouch.

In a year without great options
rasbutant : 12/23/2021 9:02 pm : link
It’s not a terrible idea. But not the direction I would like to see them go. Signing him probably means a .500 record and out of reach of the top QB prospects.

Let Judge hitch his wagon to Jones for one more year. They either turn it around an all is good in Giants land. Or they bomb once again get fired and the Giants new GM and Coach get their pick of the top draft prospects.

Also I believe Jimmy is a free agent in 2023 so they can just sign him then if you still want him.
Is it me or does this sub love Jimmy G more

Would rather keep Jones

Cheaper and just as good… with upside.

So why not just keep DJ and continue to most likely lose, giving you the shot at the top of every draft to indeed get that young stud QB who will grow with the team?

And shoot ourselves in the foot with a contract we can’t afford when we have to rebuild?

I don't want Mara tempted to extend Jones, and I think keeping him in there won't help morale. The Giants do a ton of dumb shit, and nearly every decision they've made in many years has been wrong.
Trading for ANY QB with a sizable contract
BigBlueNH : 12/23/2021 9:21 pm : link
on a team as short on talent across the board as we are, would be a serious mistake. It would only marginally improve us in the short term, and handcuff us in the long-term. I am surprised that so many people are advocating for this.

I don't know how anyone can watch our O week after week and think that any QB would succeed with it. We've seen what Brady and Mahomes looked like in the SB where they had OL issues, and our OL is markedly worse.

Not sure I agree with that, he probably stands good chance of scoring on the open market, and Giants would not really have any leverage to redo his deal without the incentive of new money, eg new years tacked on.

then you are looking at the draft. No one is trading that young promising qb. On the marketplace, you will find former top draft picks who have turned out to be not very good (we already have one of those), guys with arm talent who are reclamation projects ( like Kerry Collins was) and vets whose teams have moved on.

Watch the Giants hire Cutcliffe to be qb coach, Jones has for him a decent year, gets a big contract and then he flutters back to earth the following year.

I’d take him on a small contract as a FA

in a trade? Lol, no thanks, would rather just suck and keep collecting high picks.
Since we're so eager to move valued draft capital
BigBlueDent : 12/23/2021 11:24 pm : link
Deshaun Watson. That's the only QB you part with draft capital for assuming his off the field stuff is sorted. Elite talent, young, and a definite franchise QB. To be clear, I'm not advocating this, it's the name that should be considered rather than Russ Wilson and Jimmy G. I'm all in on taking Oline oline and some more oline
He would fit in.

I did. This was posted before his poor performance against a solid team though.

While he had a bad game, he is still an upgrade over jones...

Again...it was a discussion not a situation where i 100% want it.
Yeah he’s an upgrade
UConn4523 : 12/24/2021 1:18 am : link
but not enough to give up picks and take on a $27m cap it for. Only way out of that is extending him, and no thanks there. If we are trading for a QB it needs to be for a difference maker otherwise just sign a vet/draft a QB and let it be settled in camp.
I'm down on Jones
Mike from SI : 12/24/2021 2:50 am : link
but as others have mentioned, when you factor in contract, age, and all that, you stick with Jones.

100% right. He's a low end JAG. I'm ok with him as a stopgap, nothing more. You don't give a lot and you don't pay a lot.

San Francisco turned down an offer of a 2nd round pick for Jimmy in the offseason, they wanted a 1st. Despite his struggles last night I doubt they would settle for a 3rd and a backup QB.

ZogZerg : 12/24/2021 8:10 am : link
beat JG and a 49r team needing to win.

Yet another example of how good coaching gets the best out of players and how the Giants have shit coaches.

If the Giants keep the current coaching staff it doesn't matter who they trade for/pick up at any position.
I don’t see him as an upgrade
Justlurking : 12/24/2021 8:28 am : link
At all. Fine with him competing with Jones but not at big salary. Jimmy G would get sacked 90 times behind our shit line. He stinks in an offense that runs for 200 yards a game no matter which back is behind him.
You only take on his salary
WillieYoung : 12/24/2021 9:56 am : link
not his pro rated bonus. So 25 Million or so. 2022 is final year of his contract. Wouldn't do it unless he converted 21 Million to bonus and extended for two years at 15/per reducing 2022 cap hit by 14 Million and it only cost us a third.
what has Jimmy done that makes him better than Daniel

I wouldn't even give that up for him. When they're ready to move on to Lance, they'll have to cut JG. Sign him then if you need to, I wouldn't give up anything of value.
Why trade for a stop gap
Spiciest Memelord : 12/24/2021 11:11 am : link
when we already have Jones?

Now Mariota or Headley would be interesting, but the Giants would likely try to mold them into Eli.

He is so bad that his coach is afraid to try to score at the end of the half because JG may turn over the ball. He is terrible.

Well, fortunately for San Francisco there are NFL teams who understand the value of a starting QB and there are more teams than just NYG looking for one.. So they won't "have to cut him". It's supply and demand. They'll most likely get a 2nd in 2022 and a conditional pick in 2023.
