From the February 25, 1979 NY Times article linked in truebluelarry's excellent post on the Wellington/Tim Mara feud:
|"In the past, it often seemed that the capable and the incapable were retained as long as they had Giant lineage. Now they will remain or depart on George Young's evaluation rather than on their tenure with the franchise."
That exact line could have been truthfully written in a newspaper article yesterday - and THAT is the true "Giants Way," with which George Young managed to sufficiently interfere to create a generation of relative success and prosperity for the franchise. Since the last Super Bowl, however, the fruits of the George Young era expired and we fully back to the 1965-1978 way of doing business.
And nothing short of a George Young-like figure with similar authority and responsibilities is going to arrest the slide of this once-proud franchise. If left to his own devices, does anyone truly believe that John Mara won't act in the same way as his father, as he has done for the past decade to similarly dismal results? Link
