... family/friends and maintaining them on the payroll - was publicly apparent in 1979 and likely long before.
From the February 25, 1979 NY Times article linked in truebluelarry's excellent post on the Wellington/Tim Mara feud:
"In the past, it often seemed that the capable and the incapable were retained as long as they had Giant lineage. Now they will remain or depart on George Young's evaluation rather than on their tenure with the franchise." |
That exact line could have been truthfully written in a newspaper article yesterday - and THAT is the true "Giants Way," with which George Young managed to sufficiently interfere to create a generation of relative success and prosperity for the franchise. Since the last Super Bowl, however, the fruits of the George Young era expired and we fully back to the 1965-1978 way of doing business.
And nothing short of a George Young-like figure with similar authority and responsibilities is going to arrest the slide of this once-proud franchise. If left to his own devices, does anyone truly believe that John Mara won't act in the same way as his father, as he has done for the past decade to similarly dismal results?

I find what is happening now to be even more egregious considering John Mara and co have the benefit of learning from history — much of which they experienced — and the tragedy of Wellingtons 15 years of mistakes, and still cannot get out of their (and our) way. I’m so frustrated I could cry.
He is a guy who will do it his way and does not bend over for anyone. He is currently coaching another team.
As scary and depressing as it is, I find it hard to disagree with you. The Mara family way of doing business is so entrenched in this organization, and the family's utter lack of self-reflection so profound, that I fear they will be doormats for years to come. At some point (maybe soon), I'm just not going to go along for the ride anymore.
It is astounding not only how bumbling and incompetent they are, but how they are literally the only ones who don't see it.
