Why do the Giants always tip their hand at the draft?

shadow_spinner0 : 1/9/2022 11:39 am
In 2016 it was known the Giants wanted Floyd and Conklin then two teams jumped the Giants and grabbed them so Reese then took Eli Apple. Everyone knew Gettleman wanted Barkley, it was no secret so he took him, luckily for him, we were #2 and it was slim for the Browns to trade out for #1. Last year reports came out the Giants wanted Smith, Eagles knew so they traded up to take him, Giants were either forced to pick was available or trade down which they did. It seems the Giants, regardless who is running the draft is always caught with their pants down and are never the aggressors in the drat.
Because the Giants

They’re incompetent,

plain and simple.
I don't think we did this last draft

No one knew we were picking Thomas
Honestly? Because there are too many chefs in the kitchen

...what with multiple Maras, their underlings and henchmen, plus the GM and his staff, there's more chances that someone will leak.

Everyone knew they liked Smith and the corners.
Smith was predictable

Giants needed a WR and every Alabama player was mocked to us at one point or another

Incompetence.
Agreed

That there’s too many people with family ties possibly leaking stuff. Problem is, Judge, Abrams, DG were convinced this OL was fine even though the younger players(Lemieux) showed nothing to hand them the starting jobs. They messed up big time by deciding between Smith or a trade back, and yes getting the Bears first this year is big, but they had the chance to take Slater or Parsons I am glad they didn’t take Parsons but many on here still hope they took him which is fine. The OL would be a lot closer had NYG taken Slater.
When you're picking that high it's an easier guess
BillT : 1/9/2022 11:51 am : link
We "knew" they wanted Smith because we all knew they weren't getting Chase or Waddle and WR was the obvious need. Same with Barkley. In the first round it's not hard to match talent with need. And just BTW, did we really know they were going to take Thomas. Did we know they were going to take Jones or Lawrence. Not really.
To say that the Giants always tip their hand..
EricJ : 1/9/2022 11:55 am : link
is to also assume that we knew who they wanted.

Not hard to narrow done who a team is shooting for. It happens league wide.
Eli Apple pick might have cost Reese his job
Vanzetti : 1/9/2022 12:03 pm : link
I don’t mean directly but indirectly

Eli was a problem child and his mother became an issue with all her teeets. Just the sort of publicity the Maras hate.

A guy like Conklin could have made a big difference with Eli Manning, who is not a scrambler and needs an OL that can block in both the running and passing game to be successful

Jerry might never have been faced with the decision of benching Eli if had Conklin or Floyd instead of Apple.

I agree with you, fans saying we tipped our hand about Smith have no information on that. Lot's of mocks had Giants picking Smith. Teams like to pick good players, so it's logical to assume the Giants would have picked Smith.
Because New York
Modzelewski : 1/9/2022 12:23 pm : link
Has so many beat writers trying to jockey for the inside scoop. No other metropolitan area has as many papers, bloggers and people employed in the media. Then you have former players and employees who still have ties with the organization. I remember reading interviews with Marc Ross saying the Giants were guaranteed to draft Daniel Jones weeks before the draft. The same with Andrew Thomas, it was leaked prior to the draft by one of the beat writers.
Another myth
djm : 1/9/2022 12:25 pm : link
And even if teams suspected something that doesn’t necessarily hurt the giants.

Love how everyone here just knew we were taking jones in 19. Thomas in 20.

Telegraphing pics ain’t the problem. It’s the actual picks (both player and coach) we’re making that are the problem.
NY has a huge media
US1 Giants : 1/9/2022 12:27 pm : link
that is probably why.
The Giants were very bad at hiding their intentions
Jay on the Island : 1/9/2022 12:54 pm : link
But one of the few things that Gettleman did well was preventing leaks. Everyone was shocked when the Giants took Jones at 6. It was rumored that he Giants liked Jones but that they were targeting him at 17. Even Banks, Papa, and Diehl were surprised as they had heard the same.

Nobody knew that they were taking at 4. The majority thought it was Wirfs that they were going to take.
Another bullshit
section125 : 1/9/2022 12:58 pm : link
premise...make it stop.

You think the Giants are the only team that has needs? You think the Giants fanbase are the only ones that zero in on 3-6 players likely for the pick?

This is such a silly concept. They don't tip their hands. Most teams can make a very educated guess who other teams are focusing on, especially in the top half of the first round. If the Giants have 5 they will be able to be about 95 percent sure who those 4 teams will take.

Or Wills because Alabama
This is just my opinion

Feel free to attack it you won’t change my mind. That doesn’t mean I’m correct or you’re not correct.

I think the draft leaks are a quid pro quo for the media members that the Giants use to get their message out when the owners are trying to control what’s written about them and the team.

I think they come from the personnel group and ownership.

How are the Giants tipping their hand ?
Ron from Ninerland : 1/9/2022 1:38 pm : link
What a bullshit thread ! The only time in recent memory the Giants drafted who everyone expected was Barkley. Even Jones was a surprise to many. Maybe they'd have taken Chase before WTF grabbed him, maybe not. Did anyone expect them to trade up for Baker, or to trade down for Toney. Even in '20 when it was all but certain they'd draft a Tackle, did anyone expect Thomas ?

You can blame the Giants for many things, but as for the draft they've played it close to the vest.
