Ian O'Connor: Impression is Schoen is the one to beat for GM

BeckShepEli : 1/11/2022 10:06 am
"In talking to someone close to the Giants GM process a couple weeks ago, got the impression Joe Schoen might be the one to beat. The Bills exec was the first person mentioned at the time by the source among Giants targets & the first ID'd yesterday as an interview candidate."

Maybe after we pick up his fifth year option.

Haha sure.. because we want our team to be stuck with a bottom tier QB for a long time.

I doubt they pick up his 5th year option, let along a long term deal. You typically don't provide long term deals to future league back-ups.
I can live with that.

From what I've seen about the Bills' FO structure, it isn't built the way the more "progressive" teams are, but he's got a solid background.

might be one of the few candidates who would keep Judge around and try to recruit Daboll here (if the rumored friction between him and McDermott this year on playcalling is true) as OC to add to resume and get HC job elsewhere.
Fine

Don't see him making a lateral move as OC. Daboll is cashing in this year. The Dolphins and Bears have already requested an interview for their head coaching vacancies.
There's no guarantee anyone is going to be successful
mikeinbloomfield : 1/11/2022 10:23 am : link
but while the Bills haven't won anything yet, that roster is looking pretty good.

He's a nice mix of young and experienced, having been with at least three teams in the scouting department and front office.

I don't give a crap what he does with Judge. If he wants to see what Judge does with (hopefully) fewer injuries and better players, go for it. If he thinks the Captain Queeg act from the last few weeks is a dealbreaker, bye bye.

From what I've read, the Bills did not have a progressive or analytics minded front office before Beane/Schoen arrived. Those two have been building that there themselves. I think Penik's video outlined that well.

Josh Allen was a difference-maker pick. Always some question about whether a pick like that makes everyone look better than they are.

My understanding is that NFL games are not televised and there is no public record of them available. Perhaps we can have someone from BBI drive to Buffalo and ask around. Otherwise the Bills playoff outcomes may remain a mystery

With Abrams confirmed as not a candidate, I'm really hoping my first instinct was right and its either Schoen or Poles.

While definitely true for many candidates, the year before drafting Allen they made the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor. That was a roster many thought would be amongst the league's bottom feeders which was very impressive. Of course, it's just one season and isn't necessarily indicative of anything but it was pretty surprising at the time.

Why do you think Daboll would come here as an OC when he'll likely get offered HC opportunities elsewhere? He's already slated to interview with the Browns and Dolphins.

Schoen is very impressive and likely an extremely hard worker. That being said - does he have an eye for talent? That's the big question for me with all these GM candidates. It's great to have the process in place and run everything smoothly, but can you hit on early picks and find some gems?

Whatever GM is hired has to totally revamp the scouting department.

If he can put together a credible sounding rebuild plan that has enough pieces to it that will upset the status quo (like shedding certain assets for more picks/cap space), then he should go to the top of the list...

Suffice it to say, if that happens, we chose the wrong GM.

My hope is Schoen knows what a real franchise QB looks like - since he's been around the great Josh Allen - and sends Jones to another team.

It's not necessarily what Jones has done, it's what does Jones not being the QB of the future mean? The Giants near term future doesn't look as good if Jones isn't a keystone piece, so some posters have convinced themselves he is to hold on to some hope of the arrow is pointing up
