Great review/recap of the game

but, it was missing something that I had hoped to see you comment on. What were your thoughts on the deep pass (deep by our standards) to Golladay that he seemed to not exactly try very hard for. Was it just a pass to far out of reach or a guy who basically decided it wasn't worth trying very hard to make the catch?

I am with you on Dexter Lawrence. I see a guy who could get us some picks but who isn't going to be a game changer or even a solid building block in this current defense.

I agree let Booker go for $'s and get some young blood in at RB. Barkley isn't and shouldn't be considered a long term answer here.

FIRE JUDGE. The only thing offensive about this team is how offensive Judge and his ways have been. 10-23 to start is horrible but if I told you 10-23 is actually reflective of a regression would that make it the record even worse? If we were 4-12 and then 6-11 it would be a small improvement. Instead we went the other way after adding a bunch of pieces ($$$$ to the cap) to step forward. We didn't step forward, hell we didn't step back, we literally fell to the back of the line..
Dexter Lawrence can walk.

Not blaming the player. Overdrafted.

I would appreciate your thoughts on something I have beeb feeling about the team's future. It seems to me that the biggest problem we have are on offense and in particular the inability to protect the QB and run the ball. This obviously comes back to the oline and scheme. I know it is not easy, but it seems like the Giants would be very competitive if these problems were corrected. Do you think there is enough talent in the draft to get at least 3 solid OLineman? Understanding there would be growing pains. Possibly signing 1 solid FA or trading for a solid veteran. We will also be bringing in a new OC and hopefully a good OL coach.
There are other things needed to be elite but it seems like we may not be as far away as some think.
great stuff as always. your conclusion is spot on.

it's funny, in all the hubbub about the 2 QB plunges I forgot about that ridiculous jet sweep on 4th down LOL. Not that it mattered in the end, but still just a ridiculous call in that spot with that lineup.

Thanks again for doing this through another awful season. I'll look forward to your draft previews as always. They are the best around.
GREAT stuff as usual Sy, although

I would’ve preferred to read the “Sy the Jerk” version of this recap. No reason to keep the gloves on at this point.

Frightening that the building blocks section is 2.5 names long.

up with what was supposed to be football, and professional football at that.

The Giants are like a kid that is told to clean his/her room. They are overwhelmed and do not know where to start. They need adult supervision that is not currently at MetLife Stadium.

After yesterday's rumors, I am hoping that Mara/Tisch are fully willing to let the knew GM decide Judge's fate. He should be gone, but Mara is too loyal and not heartless enough. But you are right, new GM then new coach. New direction. And a new way of doing business - owners own and managers manage, coaches coach. (Well maybe that isn't new.)

Looking forward to your reviews in April and hope to see you chime in on occasion on "hot" topics. Safe travels around the country while scouting.

While watching the Rams-Niners game, I saw the Rams run almost the exact same play with Cooper Kupp in a big spot with no one blocking the edge rusher. Yet for them, it worked. Maybe it’s because the Rams use so much of that type of motion that it wasn’t like a flashing light pre-snap. Who knows?

I got zero problem letting Dexter walk when his contract is up, unless we can re-sign him at a pretty cheap price. Giants were 24th on defense in rushing yards per carry, and Dexter Lawrence was part of that mess. My guess: He may have a stamina problem at 340 lbs thus the on-again / off-again play.

Thank you for doing these game reviews every week. I enjoy reading them. I agree on your final 3 thoughts on the Giants. The defense declined a bit this year, but think it’ll be more of a force next year with the right parts added.

No matter what gap/role/position you are on DL, you need to be a factor in run defense. He gets pushed around far too much for a man his size who is supposed to be an impact player, and that was supposed to be his major selling point.

They drafted him on potential because they thought they could coach pass rush into him.

the answer to me is that it's Cooper Kupp, running it, not Alex Bachman :-)

Thanks for your effort with these all year. Probably difficult since you seem as someone who appreciates good line play on both sides.

Interesting on Jamin. I believe Dave said the Giants were going to take him had WFT not selected him just prior.

Section331 : 1/11/2022 11:29 am : link
thanks for doing these. You should get combat pay for this year! I didn't like the Golladay signing, not only the money, but I had concerns about his durability and effort (Lions coaches weren't exactly shy in questioning his availability). That said, I had no idea he would be this bad. Sure, it's not easy for a WR to perform given the revolving door at QB, but his output is simply awful, and his effort yesterday was a downright embarrassment.

Outside of AT, there is no one on the OL worth keeping, even as a reserve. That alone is a damning indictment of the personnel staff, which includes Judge.
Thank you Sy!

Great summary Sy’
beatrixkiddo : 1/11/2022 11:38 am : link
Really hope Thomas stays healthy and has a long career here. Can we please not have another promising players career end before it starts? He and McKinney I view as the two cornerstones to build around. This team is a long way from being competitive but hopefully they can start hitting on their draft picks with a new regime coming to town. Even if next year is Jones and Barkley’s last seasons, I hope the FO learns from the mistakes they have made over the past decade. No more half fixes, do the rebuild the right way, you have to go into the draft and take the BPA at every round or else you find yourselves in the situation we are now stuck in. Which is Cap hell with a bunch of overpriced FA who aren’t worth the $.
Thanks Sy. I am also interested on your take on the Galloday
Dinger : 1/11/2022 11:46 am : link
alligator arms incompletion. And really, so disappointing the lack of 1st round hits in the DG era. QBs are tricky, RBs are a mistake, but was hoping Dex would be a hit. More and more looks like we can move on from him. And honestly, Toney is a head scratcher. Why him why then? A lot of work to do on the player evaluation side.
Many Thanks, Sy

Both Crowder and McKinney
Giants73 : 1/11/2022 12:06 pm : link
Are flat footed defenders who wait for the ball carrier to get to them. Both are bad tacklers. If you look at the stat sheet they may come across as having good games but their play is weak. McKinney is the Equivilent of Trevon Diggs at safety. Watching footage of Lawrence he got good push throughout the game and when he was in the sideline you could see both Johnson and Shelton being man handled.

Looking at the snap counts, the amount of time 99/97 are on the field this year probably dwindled their production with this horrid bend don’t break defense. Would like to see the number of actual snaps these two big men took this year.

Someone out there running passing play counts, would be curious to see the amount of opportunities the GIANTS actually had for sacks and their percentage of sacks per pass play.

There are players on this team but the overall offense and defense detracts from their ability to put the stats up they would on a real team.
Great effort, Sy...

Great review!

In reading your review of IOL, I notice you didn't mention Gates and Lemieux. I realize that Gates' injury was horrific, and Seubert's resurrection the exception rather than the rule, but I was really fond of his aggressive demeanor and play in general. Lemieux. was starting to look to have potential as a solid starter. I don't think either player should stop the Giants from acquiring IOL talent, but do you see the potential for either going forward, provided each can rehab adequately?
Thanks Sy...Great job and sorry that you had to watch
George from PA : 1/11/2022 12:36 pm : link
my feeling....the smart move for any GM is to keep Judge.

It appeases the owners, Judge is not their guy...so he is in a no lose position...

Judge wins...everyone wins

Judge loses....gives GM a free year to get his people in place....a new QB too...as Jones will start making big $$$.

as it is, he is late this year as coaching staff is being assembled as we speak....
Thanks Sy

I agree 100% concerning Judge. There's just no upside in keeping him. If he doesn't get fired during next season he's almost certainly gone at the end of it. In exchange for a faux year of "stability" it will set the whole program back at least two years, and more likely at least three as coordinators and position coaches have to be change, players have to learn yet another new system, while the GM and coach need to learn about each other.

Other than as simply retribution for his crappy coaching, a decision to retain him next year damages prospects for building a solid teams for years.
Thanks Sy

OverTheCap projects his 5th year at over $10 million. Not worth it, IMO.

Makes good point on the interior OL and TE position being urgent needs to address in draft/FA.

WR is a concern to me too, but not sure we can gamble investments at moment early in draft (can see a 3rd/4th rounder there though).

I think IOL, Edge, RT, TE, LB are going to be priorities in the draft process with our first 5-6 picks.

QB is the black hole conundrum that a new GM will really earn their bacon/future on in 2023 forward.

Agreed, but for 2022 he's a keep. Gives them time to address DT/WR, maybe QB in the 2023 draft where more talent might be for plucking. QB/DT very weak this year.

that's what I was getting at in response to TTH. ANd it's the same with all the athletic press CBs they get and then play in soft zones.

That’s two coaching staffs that haven’t been able to use him well. He and Williams would be a good DT duo in a 4-3.

Dex is not a player to keep around
Rudy5757 : 1/11/2022 3:19 pm : link
He makes very little impact on the game. He was a bad 1st round pick and no reason to keep him around to not make an impact.

As for Judge, I wanted to bring him back but would have been OK if a new GM wanted to replace him. After seeing him run the 2 QB sneaks with absolutely nothing to lose I want him gone. That was downright shameful. Its not even like we were at the 1 yard line, we were at the 2. I was so disgusted at that play.

Whether we bring in an O or a D guy, this team needs a good solid OC with some creativity. I know we were lacking in talent but this offense should not have been as bad as it was. No creativity for Barkley, nothing to get the skill guys going. It was such a basic vanilla product.
Thanks for all you do Sy

Despite this dumpster fire of a season it's always good to read your analysis.

And, I was in Judge's corner after last season, but really soured on him as this season progressed. I agree. Let him go. He has shown that he doesn't have the ability to play to his team's strengths or help minimize their weaknesses. Instead, he coached scared.

Dex is already paid for and he is not a bad player. Just has not excelled. Maybe in a different scheme with a different set of coaches he plays better.
