After Reeve's second year there was a lot of agitation to fire him. According the the scuttlebutt back then one of Mara or Tisch wanted him out, the other didn't want to eat his contract. As a result he stayed.
I wouldn't put it past the Giants to be agonizing over the same thing. They've got to know that if they don't show him the door now, the new GM will in 2023. Is it possible that they're leaving Judge in limbo with the hopes he quits and gets another job on his own ? Are they waiting for the Patriots season to end to see if Little Bill takes him back ?
The game of chicken could be working both ways. If the reports that Judge stated that he wants Abrams for GM are true, then the only reason I can think for him to be running his mouth off is that he's hoping to get fired, pocket his 2022 $ and move on.
A hunt for coaches and staff is going on right now....in 2 weeks.....you will are late to the game.
sorry to disappoint the BBI....but it makes too much sense to keep Judge....at least for another year.

A likely scenario unless a GM has an understanding with a HC candidate (e.g. Schoen/Daboll).
I feel like we're in a similar cycle. It's not that the owners won't spend money, it's that they keep spending it badly. Bad contracts for players and the HC that make it feel profligate to fix the problems. It's not the solutions that are profligate; it's the bad moves that put the organization in this position. Bad players, bad scouting, bad fan relations, bad stadium, no cap space, budget stretched thin.
The team is worth billions but it's still run like a 2nd-rate mom-and-pop grocery store that stood still while Wegmans took most of its customers.

I think this "free year" idea is a fan based myth.
1. There are no free years in the NFL. If we suck for two more years, no one will be saying he gets a pass for the Judge year. The heat will be on.
2. How does one build a roster around a truly lame duck coach and his schemes while staying flexible for the next coach? You don't. This completely ignores the synergy between coach/scheme and front office in picking players that fit.
You can lay groundwork but these contracts and players have to go.
They gave him 5 years because they realized that firing coaches every 2 years is counterproductive.
They realized that they needed to be patient with coaches, particularly young/ 1st time coaches.
Those are not nec. reasons to keep him, if they don't believe in him. Then you have to move on.
I was listening to kirwin yesterday, he was saying that 2nd coaches should get 3 years, and if you hire these young guys they should get 5. Now, that seems like a lot, but that was his opinion.
To this extent, I agree that if you are not going to be patient, then just hire someone who has been a HC in the NFL before, and stop with the fresh young mind thing

What coach gets to suck for 4 years. Patience is one thing when you see improvement. Players represent their coach, he is teaching the players to be afraid and quit, by his own actions.
