Brian Flores

What are our thoughts?

I like the guy, he won 8 of his last 9 games. Can’t believe he was fired.

I think he would be a solid hire.

From New York, played at BC and actually won with terrible rosters in the NFL.
he hated Tua
larryinnewhaven : 1/12/2022 12:19 am : link
not sure the thought of Daniel Jones will excite him here.
Supposedly he was fired in Miami
Mike from Ohio : 1/12/2022 12:25 am : link
For being difficult and demanding. Not sure that would be well received with the Giants. I doubt he even gets an interview.

But it os hard not to like what he did in Miami with subpar talent.
I like him but

why do BB assistants all have to be such pains in the asses?

why? then you end up with Shurmur. Hire the best coach period.
I believe 10/14 playoff coaches are…

Offensive coaches……Offense needs to be completely rebuilt, top to bottom, and if the OC who does it is not HC, he’ll be gone as soon as he does it.

I did. It came down to dolphins FO being toxic and inept. How is that a bad thing on Flores?

Okay I agree but I dont see a guy out there. Everyone wants Dibol from buf and bills fans dont really want him because Josh Allen scrabling is the main reason there offense even works.
Dolphins' push back on firing Flores...
Mike in St. Louis : 1/12/2022 1:10 am : link
if true, I don't think he'd be a fit for Giants...

"For starters, Flores wanted full control over the organization, including roster decisions (over general manager Chris Grier). The head coach “wanted more power in everything” and “wanted more people to report to him,” and he wanted this decision-making distinction officially “formalized.” According to Jackson, Flores already had a great deal of control, and there wasn’t a single player on the roster who Flores didn’t sign off on. Still, tension remained between Flores and Grier.

Flores’ power grab went beyond the normal duties of a HC. According to Jackson, Flores requested the firing of the team’s top football media relations person. While he received push back from top executives (including president Tom Garfinkel), the employee was ultimately dismissed. Flores also chewed out an agent who posted a positive offseason update about an injured player."

How is Flores wanting more power over the GM not his fault? By all accounts his assistant coaches didn't like him and allegedly he was the driving force behind trying to trade for Watson.

Dolphins may be inept, but it was Flores own actions that contributed to his demise. Why would you want a guy like that? We basically just canned a guy who got himself fired with his actions the last few weeks. And if the Dolphins fired a guy who had a winning record, it has to be bad.
Of course
Mike from SI : 1/12/2022 1:24 am : link
the Dolphins are going to trash him on his way out the door. That's what teams sometimes feel the need to do when they fire successful coaches.

I'd take him on the Giants but it sounds like they're legitimately going to let the GM decide, so we don't even know who's making the decision yet.
I would be fine with him.
St. Jimmy : 1/12/2022 5:35 am : link
He has quantifiable results that indicate he can turn a team around. A coach for the Giants has not had any desirable NFL track record as a head coach since Coughlin. Think of the team this year. Everyone in Philadelphia was gitty they were getting a top three pick mid way through the season. That team turned it around and was actually in a playoff spot. Yeah, they lost to Tennessee but I'd take that over what we watched here.
No thanks
Sammo85 : 1/12/2022 6:01 am : link
Flores had big problems getting a functional offense there. Similar to Judge, couldn’t keep a coherent staff year to year (massive turnover on offensive side with coordinators and position coaches). There was word Flores was constantly up and down with mood and communication to people during week and played favorites with small group of players, word was getting out some players were going to Grier complaining and looking to bolt and telling other players not to come to Dolphins.
He won 19 games the past two seasons.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 1/12/2022 6:04 am : link
The Dolphins hadn’t won 19 games over 2 seasons in nearly two decades.

He did that with a collection of noodle-arm backup QBs masquerading as starters.

The guy can coach.
Hire a top offensive HC and Flores as DC/ Asst HC

.....if he doesn't get a HC gig
it's not a question we can answer
SirYesSir : 1/12/2022 7:46 am : link
only a real insider will know what went down in Miami and if the rumors of him overstepping the gm are accurate. If they are, I'd have a tough time as a new gm bringing him in.

adding to that, when you look at the many failures of the Belichek coaching tree, Judge being the most recent, I'd have a hard time as the Mara's going right back to that well
I think he did a good job there.
Victor in CT : 1/12/2022 7:46 am : link
they should at least interview him after the GM issue is resolved.
funny I was originally against him as an ex Belichick coach
Dinger : 1/12/2022 8:11 am : link
But think about the records the last two seasons. think about the talent. And from reading about it the Dolphins GM and Front office are as big a mess as the Giants....and he was still able to win. Hell, he swept the Pats. I'm hoping we get a good GM. I'm hoping that GM makes a good HC decision and that should NOT rule out Flores. He wins.
Parcels wanted full control
greatgrandpa : 1/12/2022 10:03 am : link
He wanted to buy the “groceries” he was an awnry cuss and moody and didn’t like most reporters. He had a temper and this Giant for life” ended up working in multiple organizations. After 83 he didn’t care what anyone thought of him He cleaned up the roster, developed loyalty in his players and hired good coaches to help carry out his vision You judge coaches by how they handle men and by their resulting record. Parcels did alright here and Flores looks to have some of these qualities. Whether it’s a match with the new GM is the question but then George Young and Parcells were not exactly friends

Definitely worth investigating, but I don't see why it would be a hard no. More likely it was a difference in philosophy, and differing opinions in what to look for in a QB.

From the outside, it looks to me like Flores is very strong-willed. In the extreme, that could be a problem, but I want a coach who believes in and stands up for his convictions.

The guy can flat out coach. What he did in 2019 is flat out remarkable. Almost unanimously viewed as the weakest roster in the league, lost their first 4 games by 20+ points (a couple by 30+), but won 5 of their last 9, including beating a Pats team playing for a 1st round bye in week 17.

Sign.

Up.
is Chris Grier Bobby Grier's son?
Greg from LI : 1/12/2022 10:14 am : link
If so, it's kind of a funny deja vu sort of moment, as Bobby Grier was the Patriots director of personnel who clashed with Parcells and led to Parcells' exit from New England.
Really interesting discussion
Giantfan in skinland : 1/12/2022 12:14 pm : link
On move the sticks podcast about Flores and NE assistants generally. Buck Brooks mentioned that a defining characteristic of the NE regime and those that have come out of it is that it's an environment of confrontation. In NE, it's about a competition of ideas/skills. The most qualified guy gets the job/guys butt heads to get their ideas heard. You have to assert yourself. Kraft and BB sit on top of this structure and it has worked. But outside of the building, it doesn't seem to be well received. And it doesn't foster the kind of harmonious modern workplace that executives envision for their team. Instead you get this cutthroat and contentious environment that a lot of people just are not comfortable with.

Anyways, just thought it was an interesting perspective that maybe helps explain the relative lack of success of NE assistants outside of NE.
