Joe Hortiz
Age: 46

Current job: Ravens director of player personnel since 2019.

Previous experience: Ravens director of college scouting, 2009-18; Ravens national scout, 2006-08; Ravens area scout, 2001-05; Ravens personnel assistant, 1998-2000.

Word on the beat: “Hortiz has been with the Ravens organization for 24 years, working his way up the front office’s hierarchy after starting as a personnel assistant and becoming one of its most trusted and respected evaluators, first for Ozzie Newsome and then for Eric DeCosta. He managed all aspects of the team’s draft process for a decade before he was promoted to the Ravens director of player personnel when DeCosta became the team’s general manager in 2019. Hortiz, an Auburn graduate who has extensive ties to the SEC, now oversees the organization’s pro and college scouting.” — Jeff Zrebiec

Breakdown: The Ravens have arguably had the best front office in the NFL during Hortiz’s near-quarter century with the team. It would be hard to find a better training ground than an organization that has been a perennial contender without the benefit of a true franchise quarterback. Hortiz worked as an undergraduate assistant while at Auburn from 1995 to 1997.

Age: 42

Current job: 49ers assistant GM since 2021.

Previous experience: 49ers vice president of player personnel, 2017-20; Broncos director of college scouting, 2016; Broncos assistant director of college scouting, 2014-15; Broncos national scout, 2011-13; Broncos regional scout, 2009-10; Patriots area scout, 2006-08; Patriots pro scout, 2005; Patriots scouting assistant, 2003-04.

Word on the beat: “John Lynch had no front office experience when he was hired as 49ers GM in 2017, so he wisely hired Peters. Lynch’s buddy, John Elway, allowed Peters to leave the Broncos to join the 49ers. Peters and Martin Mayhew, who is now the Washington Football Team’s GM, served as Lynch’s top lieutenants, with Peters focusing on college scouting and Mayhew dealing with pro scouting. Peters has run the 49ers’ drafts since 2017.” — Matt Barrows

Breakdown: Peters is close with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (Peters left the Patriots for Denver in 2009 when McDaniels became the Broncos head coach) and there has been speculation that they would team up as a head coach-GM duo. Peters interviewed for the Panthers GM job last year. He played defensive end at UCLA from 1999 to 2001.

Joe Schoen
Age: 42

Current job: Bills assistant general manager since 2017.

Previous experience: Dolphins director of player personnel, 2014-17; Dolphins assistant director of college scouting, 2013; Dolphins national scout, 2008-12; Panthers area scout, 2003-07; Panthers combine scout, 2002; Panthers scouting assistant, 2001.

Word on the beat: “One of the first moves Bills general manager Brandon Beane made when he was hired in 2017 was to hire Schoen as his assistant general manager. The two have been tight for decades, and Beane relies on Schoen as one of his most trusted voices in all of the organization’s personnel decisions. Schoen has gone on the road scouting some of the biggest prospects that the Bills eventually drafted, both by himself and with Beane. Schoen was also in the inner circle of their franchise-defining quarterback search in 2018 that ultimately led the Bills to Josh Allen. Schoen is one of the most respected and well-liked people in the organization, is a strong communicator, is an organizer with excellent interpersonal skills and made his rise from NFL outsider to assistant GM through his work ethic.” — Joe Buscaglia

Breakdown: Schoen will arrive at his interview Wednesday with an endorsement from former Giants coach Bill Parcells, who hired the then up-and-coming executive in Miami in 2008. Schoen might be the hottest name on the market due to his work as Beane’s right-hand man. He’s also on the Bears’ wish list. Schoen could be part of a package deal with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who will be in demand on the head-coaching circuit. Schoen interviewed for the Panthers’ GM job last year. He played quarterback and wide receiver at Division III DePauw.


Finding a good GM can be done much easier than finding a great coach and staff.

Having listened to the talking heads on FAN, ESPN, NFL on Sirius, I have a lot better impression of Flores and what he was able to do in Miami. Seems the disfunction down there rivals our FO. I would not mind seeing Monti Ossenfort and Flores combo. Its early in the process and it seems like ownership is saying and doing all the right things. I do have Eric buzzing in my ear and so I'm sceptical of what else is going on behind the scenes at Maramart(I'm buying what they are selling so far). I'm hopeful that WHOMEVER they choose they are able to have the front office and scouting department set up the way they want. But even more I'm hoping that they can bring the Giants back to winning.

Schoen sounds like an awesome candidate.

I was also intrigued by Adrian Wilson. It's unclear how much personnel expertise is there, but he receives a lot of credit for the outstanding culture the Cardinals have in the building. Could be a good fit with the right personnel guys and a head coach who warrants significant sway in the roster decisions.
