All the talk about Daboll because he's been getting the interview requests - but Frazier has got the experience, has been a head coach, and may have better temperament/leadership skills than Daboll. Just trying to piece it together. I found this video from 2016 - seems to have a commanding presence - but obviously he'd have to bring along a great OC.
Leslie Frazier, Ravens interview from 2016 - (
New Window )
it's somewhat weird....Frazier is a guy that everyone in the NFL raves about....yet he really hasn't made that jump to head coach and been successful
Frazier has been a HC though his overall record wasn't great, he had a poor roster and still won 10 games in a season with Cristian Ponder at QB.
Well in his defense, he does have some experience coaching shitty ACC QBs who had no business being drafted in the first round.
I want the GM to hire a HC not a system.
Good defensive minds also tend to understand the whole game well too just as much as OCs in a passing league and attacking defenses (having to pressure QB, playcalling, microanalysis).
I think Dennis Allen, DC of the Saints is another guy to keep an eye on (he wants to be a HC again and he's got some loose behind the scenes respect with a few of the GMs under consideration).
Strong possibility. Sometimes familiarity or proximity leads to seeing the warts too than just fostering a relationship.
As important as the GM hire is for the organization, the HC hire is critical to get right for the GM, otherwise, we're back in purgatory in another 3-4 years with new coach.

I would prefer an offensive guy but Frazier would be good too.

Someone made a good point yesterday - it might have been Florio, not sure - which was basically that if you go with a DC as your HC, you're leaving your offense in the hands of your OC, and if he does a good job, you're dealing with replacement issues on offense, where scheme and playcalling are more diverse.
Conversely, if you go with an OC at HC, and have him either as the primary playcaller or at least the chief strategic voice on offense, you're going to sink or swim with your head guy, and if he's good, you have more stability.
The idea, obviously, is that defense is a bit more universal, while offense in the current NFL, is more nuanced.
It's not a crazy way to view things, IMO.

I have no dog in this fight, as I don't know much about either outside of how their units ranked, but in fairness to Daboll, he was saddled with some mediocre QB's. He had Buffalo at 10th in the league with Tyrod Taylor. And he deserves at least some credit for Josh Allen's swift development.
who are your favorites for HC?
But you also have Vrabel, McDermott, Belichick. I think it’s more important that the HC be a steady hand who can keep everyone together more than whether he was an OC or a DC.

Cowherd main the pt yesterday, look at the teams in the playoffs, a big majority have offensive head coaches.

Tomlin also.
