Name haven't seen mentioned much: Mike McDaniel

Jerz44 : 1/13/2022 9:49 am
Giants have asked permission to speak to two 49ers brass:

—San Francisco 49ers Assistant GM Adam Peters

—San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Ran Carthon

Any thoughts on whether they'd want to bring McDaniel?

I honestly don't know much about him, but it seems like he may be a brilliant guy despite not having much experience.
seems like a bright mind

Mara will be worried about experience

Also, I don't think he'd like his laid back, unassuming attitude. He also hasn't even called plays.

He gets credited for the 49ers run game being as effective, and creative, as it is.

He also gets credited as being excellent in player development, especially along the offensive line.

And working with Shanahan for so long, he is likely very collaborative.

He'd be high on my list of candidates, but he is very risky.

So did Kerry Collins, and he successfully overcame them. It seems like McDaniel has turned things around.

My only issue would be that I want my HC to crave the popping of champagne corks. I'm sure sparkling cider would work just as well to accompany Lombardi #5 though!
Someone speculated that Peters

might bring McDaniel with him, but I hope not as HC. I'd be fine with him as OC, but what has he done to show he is ready for a HC gig? It's Shanny's offense, and Shanahan calls the plays.
By all accounts an incredibly bright and creative football mind

but his interviews, granted just short Q&A's, don't really scream head coach to me. Just my first impression from admittedly limited info. He could absolutely be ready for it but a bright mind or great coordinator doesn't guarantee someone will be good at managing/leading a team.
He’s my preference
cokeduplt : 1/13/2022 10:17 am : link
For head coach at this time. I’d be surprised if it happens though.

Judge’s interviews screamed head coach though. How’d that work out?

Absolutely. I'm not claiming to know that he would or he wouldn't be. Just talking about my first impression. I would be upset if they hired him.
A few of us...
bw in dc : 1/13/2022 10:26 am : link
were talking about McDaniel the last few days.

He's young, innovative and very bright (Yale grad).
I know very little about the guy but did some reading
FranknWeezer : 1/13/2022 10:32 am : link
last night, and several accounts say he would only move to a team in a state where recreational marijuana is legal. Who knows if that’s true.
Another first impression

That dude is microdosing psilocybin. Maybe ketamine. Joking. Kinda. Like 50/50 joking.

First year OC when Shanahan runs the offense. And younger than Judge.
McDaniels
Sammo85 : 1/13/2022 10:54 am : link
would run a zone blocking scheme for the run game and lets QB take some hits and requires a QB that can feel pressure and throw around the pocket (not a strength for Jones), so he'd probably insist on a new QB.

Rumor is Peters first preference would be to bring Josh McDaniels from Pats wherever he would get a job.
do a quick twitter search

of Mike McDaniel, watch the videos and read articles about players say about him. You'll be impressed.

The problem, as others alluded to...it looks like hes been dropping acid lol. Doesn't look like the typical "leader of men" He's super smart and seems to know how to utilize players.

People have said he'll get eaten alive if they start losing. Which is true, the media would have a field day if they start losing games. But i guess my response is, our last 3 coaches and i'll even include coughlin...everyones brand/schtick/personality gets old quick when you start losing 10 games a year.
what players say

He honestly seems like a comedian or something. Doesn't seem like he'd be able to emerge from a NY press conference without being torn to shreds.
I think his demeanor and appearance
AcesUp : 1/13/2022 3:10 pm : link
Would get the veto from John. He's an interesting candidate for sure but probably too risky. I'm not that invested in the coaching decision, I feel the GM is the bigger hire and it all stems of that decision. However, this franchise can use a healthy shot of brainpower and from what I've seen he would help there.
Make no mistake

That is the Shanahan offense. Anyone on his staff is essentially a remora.
