PFT Article: Futures of Jones and Barkley up to GM & HC

jvm52106 : 1/13/2022 10:59 am
according to John Mara.

Barkley clears us 7 mil in cap money with no dead money if we can trade him.

Jones is more tricky but, I am still not convinced his neck injury will allow him to play.

This. But I wouldn't be shocked if the owner has something to say, particularly with Barkley

going to take on a full $7.2M to get Barkley?

This makes no sense IMO. People keep saying trade Barkley, but to who? Who is paying Barkley $7.2M?

yea i am not sure anyone is. honestly...id keep him. the upside is still there if you can convince yourself that the knee and ankle injuries plus a dogshit OL hindered him. if the plan is to add two high value resources to the OL you can assume it should be improved...

Maybe another year removed from the injury with a better OL, he bounces back and has a solid year.
Looking forward to both being gone

I really believe
pjcas18 : 1/13/2022 11:13 am : link
there is no real viable choice but to keep Barkley.

Best case is he re-establishes some value and gets a second contract elsewhere and helps offset any NYG free agent signings and perhaps contribute to a comp pick.

IMO that is best case.
Agree Barkley is not getting traded with that salary
Mike from Ohio : 1/13/2022 11:14 am : link
and coming off a year where people are asking if he will ever be the same player after the ACL injury. He will be a Giant next year.

There may be a trade market for Jones, but likely not much of one. A team drafting a QB in the first round this year who wants them to sit for a year may be interested in Jones as a one year stop gap, but probably not giving up anything significant.

But, there is no reason to trade Jones.
Bring in a vet and let them compete.

There's always someone that thinks that can utilize a player like him in their system and 7 million is a drop in the bucket . Not saying it's going to happen but it just takes one team. If Tebow can be drafted in the 1st round, anything is possible.
You guys don't think there are GMs out there
ZogZerg : 1/13/2022 11:33 am : link
looking at cluster fuck NY Giants O-line and QB situation that are saying "Barkley never had a chance and that he could really excel with our team's OLine?"

Didn't the Titans just trade for Julio Jones knowing he was over the hill and always injured? He didn't play almost all year. This it what teams do.

Of course there will be teams thinking Barkley can be the missing play maker they need to make a run. He is still young.
The best thing for the Giants
Dnew15 : 1/13/2022 11:34 am : link
is for as many teams as possible to believe that DJ and/or SB were stuck in a situation that hindered their ability to perform at a high rate. The more the better.

And the Giants should absolutely take the best offer that any team brings to the table for both players.

Neither one can stay - the best possible solution for them and the organization is for everyone to go their separate ways.
As of today
pjcas18 : 1/13/2022 11:36 am : link
for 2022 Barkley has the 9th highest cap hit for a RB in the entire league. Every one ahead of him is a 2nd contract (FWIW).

I do believe cap space is fluid, but it's not infinite and $7.2M for a RB is not a drop in the bucket.

Teams that pay a RB $7.2M expect that RB to be a feature back and a difference maker.

I think there could potentially be a market. Maybe a team that thinks it has a Super Bowl window would be willing to pay 7.2. You’d also have to find a team willing to sign him to a new deal.

I think the bigger issue will be compensation. I’d be pretty surprised if they were able to get a late 1st round pick. Likely some sort of conditional pick ranging from a 3rd to a 1st depending on escalators.
Offense was built around SB and DJ
averagejoe : 1/13/2022 1:44 pm : link
and that is why they should not return. If new GM can dump both somehow that will be an excellent beginning .
It's really a shame
Bubba : 1/13/2022 1:56 pm : link
as both of these kids are poster children for what you want on your team, great team mates, hard workers, good clean life styles etc. Just not good football players. In spite of what Joe Judge said results do matter.
We're probably stuck with Barkley next year
FStubbs : 1/13/2022 1:57 pm : link
But next year should hopefully be his last in blue.
I would not mind if
section125 : 1/13/2022 2:06 pm : link
both were traded.

There will be a team that likes Barkley's potential and low miles. Now that he is playing and will be 2 years removed from the surgery, teams can see he can play. Because of the $7.2 mill it would reduce the trade value yes. McVay or Shanahan maybe be guys that would take him. Take a #5 to clear cap space.

I do not think the GM trades Jones, but if someone made an offer of a #2 or #3, well then good bye(maybe even a #4)
We can debate the merits of keeping them another year
Jimmy Googs : 1/13/2022 2:11 pm : link
but is there really anybody that sees either Jones or Barkley as a longer-term fixture for the Giants anymore?

The team has to go through a major rebuilding of its roster and the first part of that is determining who is truly core to the future of the team. And the second part is to potentially shed non-core assets if they have likely have more short-term value than long. These two steps, done in conjunction, create the basis and initial platform the GM utilizes in putting together a longer-term roster building plan for the future. If properly executed, it will undoubtedly shorten the timeframe in getting this franchise back to winning more consistently again.

Both Jones and Barkley are not core to the Giants, and they still may be able to fetch decent value in the marketplace before their contracts wind down. Therefore they are two prime candidates to move and help this obvious rebuilding process that the next GM will spearhead...

Barkley still has great ability
Producer : 1/13/2022 2:11 pm : link
I would think he will have some value on the trade market for a team looking for a final piece.

I can't speak to the cap number and how that might turn potential suitors off. It's a high number, but with a team that can open holes for him, it might be worth it.
No one's trading for an expensive, mediocre RB at the end
mikeinbloomfield : 1/13/2022 2:12 pm : link
of his contract. We can only hope he plays better than mediocre next year and gets a decent deal somewhere else.

The issue is with this player on the books that means another player who may contribute more will have to be cut or not signed for cap reasons. Next year the cupboard is really bare. Thanks Dave!
If Barkley had shown anything close
Jerry in_DC : 1/13/2022 2:31 pm : link
to his pre-injury ability this year, there would be a market for him in the mid-round pick range. That guy absolutely has value to some teams. That guy would have some value to the Giants as well, on the right contract

He was a horrible pick. But there is a lot of room between Horrible Pick and Completely Worthless.

But if he never gets his burst back, then he is actually close to Worthless
I could see Barkley
AcesUp : 1/13/2022 2:34 pm : link
Carrying value at the trade deadline next year. A contender that loses some offensive firepower to injury and wants a rental for their run.

I assume he looks better early next year but who knows. If the market isn't there in the offseason that would be my strategy with him.
