Matt Rhule confirms on WFNZ that Rashawn Slater was not “ideal tackle size” and they weren’t comfortable “taking a guard that high.” Also mentions that he has a mobile QB in LA.
Guys… maybe Rhule isnt the best football mind out there
Well there were reports that a lot of teams felt confident he would be an all pro level guard if he didn't work out at tackle. If anything that makes him even safer pick.
and he should be fired and the Giants dodged a bullet? Every team has measurable's (see Giants and Aaron Donald) that they apply to positions. They thought Slater would play inside and did not want to draft a guard that high. I could swear that I read those same comments on this site, but maybe I am mistaken. Seriously, he may turn out to be an awful NFL head coach, but some of the takes lately are comical.
RE: Why can't these guys admit they made a mistake?
Is their uber egos? By saying shit like that they just make themselves sound like idiots.
I didn't listen to what he said but maybe he DID admit a mistake?
Did he say that he thinks Slater will fail because he's not the right size? Or did he infer that they incorrectly evaluated him based on a perceived shortcoming that didn't wind up impacting his play?
They evaluated him and thought he would be a guard. We drafted Pugh as a tackle and it turns out he was a better guard. Flowers is playing OK as a guard. They made a mistake but a lot of teams do.
reportedly had Slater below AVT. Hard to get too riled without hearing the actual interview with Rhule. Maybe he said that they were wrong in that evaluation, but attempted to explain why they didn't take him.
"That was a hard decision," Rhule said. "Rashawn hadn't played the year before, he wasn't ideal tackle size. There was a lot of questions if he was a guard or tackle and the same thing with Alijah Vera-Tucker and it was really are you going to take a guy who's a guard at this number? I've had a chance to go back and watch Rashawn and he's playing with a really mobile quarterback, he's a really good player. I think if Jaycee would have played this whole year, I think if you back to that Saints game, I mean he was dominant. Had he played the whole year I think people would be really excited Jaycee. But we both know the issues are the issues when you lose games then everyone is going to be frustrated.
He'd be playing G for Dallas because they have quality bookend tackles in place. And very likely a Pro Bowl G while waiting for Smith or Collins to leave/retire so he can then take one of those spots.
I'd be okay with Slater playing G for us. He's better than Thomas. So I would move Thomas to RT and Slater to LT. Whatever the case, Slater is super versatile and would be impactful at all 5 positions on the OL.
was bandied about a lot before the draft, even though his performance at OT in college is what cemented is draft status. He's 6'4" and 315 lbs (at least he's listed as that now) and Miss State's Charles Cross, considered one of the top 2 OTs in this coming draft, is listed as 6'5" and 310 lbs. Is that 1" in height really the dividing line for an NFL OT?
Slater is the most gifted OL I have seen in a while

He didn't say they were right or wrong, he explained why they didn't take him at the time. This is the full comment:
“That was a harder decision,” he said when asked why Slater wasn’t the choice. “Rashawn hadn’t played the year before. He wasn’t ideal tackle size. There was a lot of questions as ‘Hey, is he a guard?’ Same thing with Alijah Vera-Tucker. And it was really ‘Hey, are you gonna take a guy who’s a guard at this number?'”
Those are beliefs, by the way, that were shared by many.
The folks who evaluated Slater as just a OG were wrong

There was certainly some of that out there. But the game where Slater played against Chase Young should have put to rest any concerns about Slater playing LT in the NFL.
Young is the quintessential DE physically - long, fast, quick, explosive. And Slater dominated him.
What I dont understand is how the Giants could have looked at their starting 5 on the OL and their backups (Solder was their best backup) and not concluded that Slater could have helped if only because they had no depth and had to assume that someone of the starting 5 would get hurt and Slater could start anywhere on the line from day 1.
Then, even with the trade down to 20,I dont get why they passed on OL help there for a gadget guy. Don't they remember passing on Ramzyk for Engram? Same mistake.
Don't pick an All-Pro Offensive Lineman with versatility at both

That game is what put me on Slater.
I wanted in order for NYG Waddle, Parsons, Slater. Feeling really good about those 3.

To me it seemed like he was making excuses more than anything, but maybe I’m reading it wrong.
how this can be any sort of "I told you so" indictment on Rhule. It's not like he justified passing on Slater to take some average quarterback by saying he fell in love with the QB at the Senior Bowl or something.
To me, he just explained why they felt Jaycee Horn was the better prospect and value where they picked. I really doubt he was the only one. Horn looks like a stud and like ryan might say, let it play out over the next 10 years before we decide who's better.
does it matter if you dodge a bullet only to get run over by a bus?

he's not prototypical Tackle size.

like we dodged a bullet there, especially with that asking price. He'll go back to college in a year or two.

Less it more - BB has the most boring press conferences ever that never contain any answers.
It may eventually work out in Carolina, but Rhule seems more better suited for the college game.
Had he been drafted by DAL or NYG....he is at LG.

Nobody drafts perfectly. Not even close. It's a good practice to review and see why you missed some things.
I have no opinion if he is a good coach, but this is completely fine.

Carolina picked 8th by the way.
Sounds like he's been reading some of good draft advice you often read on BBI...
