can we now say Bill Belichick's NFL coaching tree is poison?

There are no Bill Belichick assistants left as NFL head coaches.

Joe Judge
Brian Flores
Al Groh
Nick Saban (clearly the best but for college football)
Romeo Crennel
Eric Mangini
Josh McDaniels
Bill O’Brien
Matt Patricia
Jim Schwartz
Charlie Weis

Guess working for one of the greatest coaches ever doesn't translate into shit when it comes to hiring his underlings.
thats 11 good coaches though

theres only so many truly great HCs.

i don't get the knock on his coaching tree which is just an extension of the Parcells tree.

everyone was on Reid's tree a few years back and look at some of those guys now... Frank Reich blew two win and in games. Pederson won a SB and then got fired. Nagy is... Nagy.
Mike Vrabel doesn't count?

Al Groh had some good years at Virginia. Still probably won more bowl games than his successors combined.

Tree did better in the NFL than that entire list combined...
I think Josh McDaniels deserves another shot

Vrabel never coached under Bill
Brian Flores should not be on that list.

He will be coaching again soon; maybe here.
Anyone who's worked with statistics could tell you
Cyrus the Great : 1/13/2022 5:56 pm : link
that a sample sizs of 11 is far too small to judge anything like this. I would be willing to bet the correlation between being an assistant under a winning coach and being a winning head coach is very weak. There is no head coach who magically transforms his assistants into ready made head coaches. All these people clammoring about the BB coaching tree don't have a clue

I think you are half way there.

The point is coming from BB org should vary little weight

In fact, how involved he is in every aspect, it should be seen as a negative. I’d put more stock in a guy like Graham who has had success with questionable leadership
And Belichick without Brady ain't too swift either

58-71 over 8 seasons.

The tree itself is poisoned.

Who was more responsible for the Pats success again?

It’s a little too soon to make that call

But they are both all time greats. Unlikely there is ever a combo with the success they had ever again.

Are from Parcells tree
To be fair
BlackLight : 1/13/2022 6:08 pm : link
Five seasons coaching in Cleveland didn't convince anyone that Belichick was the greatest head football coach of all time.

Sean Payton considers himself part of the Parcells tree.
yes

i also think it's fair to speculate belichek may be a bit of a piece of shit. he doesn't seem to prepare his assistants to advance their careers successfully beyond being assistants. It's interesting that Saban's guys go off and succeed, Belichek's don't. they inevitably have to run back to bill, quickly, and he puts them back on his payroll.

Some real good coaches
Lines of Scrimmage : 1/13/2022 6:19 pm : link
and for some the journey is far from ending. What’s pretty interesting about both Bills is they didn’t fire a lot of coaches unless I’m mistaken.
I think we can say...

the Belichick tree needs to be chopped down for good. Aside from O'Brien, it's one of the worst coaching trees ever.

Vrabel was on O’Brien’s staff. I guess in a way that is part of the BB tree
Belichick

plus his coaching tree probably still have more titles than any other coaching tree, lol.

it's kind of like the Gretzky family has the most points for one family in NHL history with Wayne doing all the heavy lifting and Brent sharing his name.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/13/2022 6:33 pm : link
Bill O'Brien...best of the bunch.
The Perkins tree started it

It all.
I think Judge
David B. : 1/13/2022 7:39 pm : link
Might have done fine on a team with a competent GM and talent.

Probably be a year or two before he gets a position-coach job again, unless the Pats take him back. Fortunately for him, he'll be collecting Giants checks for a couple of years while he waits for the league to forget.

And they will. McAdoo got a job again eventually.
So why can't Belichick's coaching staff cut it in any place
Angel Eyes : 1/13/2022 7:43 pm : link
other than New England?

Because it's all Belichick. Everything. From game plan to what's served for lunch in the cafeteria.

Everybody else is along fro the ride.
Old Bill's tree is full of fruit
Alamo : 1/13/2022 10:53 pm : link
His tree is not bare guys...All of you forget the most important issue with his tree..They all get HC JOBS WITH THE WORST 5 OR 6 TEAMS IN THE NFL !! They do not get jobs with teams that were in the playoffs do they ?? So why do you give negative feedback on their coaching?? Judge sucked, but this team has been sucking for many years, before he got here..Old Bill Belichek would get fired here also after 2 yrs..
Brady claimed that he and Belichick spent hours before each game
GeofromNJ : 1/13/2022 11:31 pm : link
going over the defensive weaknesses of the upcoming opponent in order to come up with an offensive game plan. Others close to the Pats say that Belichick is effectively the defensive coordinator of the team. It both observations are true, maybe Belichick's assistants don't succeed because the Pats' success if not due to them, but to BB.

Another shot? He had his second shot, agreed to a deal with the Colts and then backed out of it to run back to Belichick.
