I somehow stumbled upon an article earlier about Coughlin taking the head coaching job in '04. If memory serves, the candidates were TC, Weis, Crennel, & I believe we took a late run at Saban, much like we did prior to hiring Fassel. There may be another man I'm forgetting.
I remember being very pro TC because of his time in Jacksonville, absent how it ended as they were in cap hell. Also, his tie to the Parcells years were a factor to in me wanting him.
Coughlin should be in the HOF imo. Hope his recent stint with the Jags doesn't diminish what he accomplished here and in Jax the first time around.
I don’t think the stick has a hand!
Anyone but Coughlin. Hated that guy.
Very glad we went with Coughlin

There was definitely rumors of Johnson at some points. I think it was a reaction to Parcells in Dallas (“they have our guy, let’s get theirs”) but it was definitely speculated for a little while.
EA has gone on the record that he was not impressed by TC's interview.

He's on record of not liking Coughlin's long prepared statement. He said after that statement that the rest of the interview went well.

Because he wanted Saban.
At that point I wanted Coughlin, but no he went to BC and we were stuck with the original unnameable coach.
I think we are up to 3 unnameable coaches now, and one prize winning unnameable GM.
I believe this is correct. They tried to get him after year 2 at BC but he said he had not righted the ship yet and wanted to commit to that. Who knows if he saw some issues on the Giants that he did not want to contend with though. He always considered BP as a big mentor and Bill sparred a little with GY. After year 3 he bolted to Jax.
The EA/TC dynamic was pretty interesting. EA seemed not the biggest fan but in the end they worked well together. EA had already assembled some good talent and TC got him to invest in the OL more and build a more overall physical team. I do think TC had a lot of say his first two years as this was Wellington's HC.
BUT, TC cares deeply, he cares about the right stuff big picture, and he’s an excellent coach in terms of strategy, and mostly game management (compared to what else we’ve had here).
I think when he started the leadership council and got out of his own way, he was tremendous. He successfully worked to build the OL, got mostly good coordinators, could be a great leader, and at their best the Giants didn’t beat themselves. That 2007 playoff run and SB wins were incredible.
I believe in the theory that the deeper into the playoffs you go, the more coaches matter. He took it the whole way, 2x vs BB. That’s some great work.

I remember when he was here in '90 and I believe at one point we had tried to get him after Reeves? I may be wrong but he was pretty committed to BC and didn't want to leave.

I think we tried to get TC BEFORE hiring Reeves, not after. When Reeves was fired, TC was in Jacksonville already.
Old school, Boston College, they had tried to get him to coach here before; he was basically handed the job. Not that he was a bad choice in the end.

Yes, TC had just finished his second year and he turned the Giants down. They hired Reeves and then TC left for Jax in '94 after his third year.
