Giants’ GM decision likely will come with coaching clue

GFAN52 : 1/13/2022 7:55 pm
Pretty much what has already been discussed on BBI.

Quote:
If Schoen ends up being hired, he can be tied to Brian Daboll, the Bills’ offensive coordinator, and Leslie Frazier, the Bills’ defensive coordinator. Daboll has never been a head coach, while Frazier went 21-33-1, with one playoff appearance, as head coach of the Vikings. Schoen and one of the Bills’ coordinators could be a pairing.

Quote:
Hortiz had a first-hand look the past few years at Don “Wink’’ Martindale, the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, who would not be a particularly hard sell, considering the Giants conducted what was considered to be a strong interview with Martindale in 2019 before hiring Pat Shurmur as their head coach.

Martindale is a character

I think I’d want Frazier over Daboll, if that’s what it came down to
This is kind of what I don’t want

But then again, this is the way the NFL works.

People know their people. People trust their people. People bring their people.
My issue with Martindale

Is …. Who is his offensive coordinator going o be? This is an offensive league and you need a real good one.
All speculation.

If these gm candidates are the real deal they will be thorough.

If Horitz is the pick, wouldn't Roman get consideration too?

And then if his offensive coordinator is successful were probably looking at a new offense in a couple years. That doesn't feel the same as changing defenses in the reverse scenario.
They should be focusing in

on McDaniel from San Fran.

Joe Brady.
Speculative

It’s possible these guys know somebody on other teams they’d really want to give a shot to.

Keep in mind most of these guys had no input in the coaching staff hires at their current teams.

I realize all these coaches come with, who knows factor, but something about Daboll scares me a little as HC. Can’t put finger on it.
Leslie Frazier

Was abysmal as hc, I want nothing to do with an aging retread.
Lazy article
Mike in NY : 1/13/2022 8:51 pm : link
Why couldn’t Schoen want someone like Brian Flores whom he has seen twice a year in AFC East? Don’t forget Schoen has ties to Parcells and Flores has ties to BB.
No way

can you bring in a 1st time coach again. The fan base and ownership does not have the patience for it.

None of these guys are particularly inspiring, but I would say a Caldwell type. Professional, older, respected with a track record. Maybe the guy who just got fired from houston, he did a pretty good job. baltimore ties I believe.

I like Flores, but not sure a GM without ties to him would be interested
Roman
CSully1111 : 1/13/2022 9:17 pm : link
Is there something about Roman I’m missing? Why isn’t he being mentioned (other than here, occasionally) in these articles?
I don't want a retread...
bestt : 1/13/2022 9:34 pm : link
I want this team to score points... I am sick of our offense's lack of production

That makes zero sense. I want the GM to pick his coach- no restrictions, no preconceived notions or bias.

Culley will be 67 at the start of next season, no thanks.
Am I wrong that teams don't have to release

a coach to make a lateral move, they only have to let them go for a promotion?

He an Joe Brady are apparently tight.

This isn't necessarily true.. The scouting/coaching network is much more connected than many realize. We all speak with each other. There are friends from other organizations, we're all at the same events, the same "circuit". Many intertangled from jobs across the league.

Yep. Some of the leading contenders (guys like Schoen, Peters, Cowden have close to 20 years across multiple organizations).

Poles/Hortiz are guys who might stick to the home base familiarity, but again no guarantee there as you said.

I agree with you. I think it is his laid back nature and perhaps not as much of a leader.

Took the Vikings to the playoffs in his first full year as HC with them.
Frazier was JAG as HC
