The Connells are playing down the street from me tomorrow night and I started thinking of the great college rock of the mid 80s. Man there was a lot of great rock and roll from that era that never got its (or its complete) due. Anyone have any favorites they'd like to share?

I got to see J Mascis as special guest of Buffalo Tom not long ago...that was a treat!
Agreed that they jump started the college rock awakening, but I was listening to college rock in the late 70s, back when Jim Carrol Band, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Fear, Black Flag, Bad Brains, etc were on. There's no doubt, though, that REMs first 3 albums were critical to the genre breaking thru to the mainstream

I'll add Dinosaur Jr

the Umass/Amherst connections from the 90's could make a mini rock n roll hall of fame.

XTC. I think XTC is most underrated band of any era. One of the greatest bands of all-time and woefully underappreciated. I suppose the fact that they never toured post-English Settlement didn't help them.

Slint
Dramarama
The The
Mekons
Butthole Surfers
The Meatmen
Dead Kennedys

Good call on XTC. They did play the occasional show every now and then, even if they didn't tour. I saw them at Tower Records on 72nd St in NYC to promote Oranges & Lemons. It was just a promo gig and they played maybe 4 songs.
Some great bands listed, been a fan of XTC since the Drums and Wires days. Some of the wryest songwriting around.
