NFT: Mid-80s Music Thread - Best College Rock Years

rnargi : 1/14/2022 9:11 am
The Connells are playing down the street from me tomorrow night and I started thinking of the great college rock of the mid 80s. Man there was a lot of great rock and roll from that era that never got its (or its complete) due. Anyone have any favorites they'd like to share?

Connells
Love and Rockets
Smithereens
Love Tractor
The Soup Dragons
Godfathers
The Wonder Stuff
James
Charlatans UK
Ocean Blue
The Lemonheads
Mighty Lemon Drops
Soul Asylum
Replacements
Husker Du (and Sugar)

So many greats...need to break out the old tapes.

I got to see J Mascis as special guest of Buffalo Tom not long ago...that was a treat!
And great call on the Ocean Blue

'Ballerina Out of Control" is one of my all time favorite songs. They've released new stuff in recent years and appear to be semi-active touring. The singer is a lawyer I think, but they make time for it still. Would love to see them live one day.
Simply must add

R.E.M, since they kinda started the whole College Rock thing, IMHO, and its latter 80's...but the Pixies.

Agreed that they jump started the college rock awakening, but I was listening to college rock in the late 70s, back when Jim Carrol Band, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Fear, Black Flag, Bad Brains, etc were on. There's no doubt, though, that REMs first 3 albums were critical to the genre breaking thru to the mainstream

the Umass/Amherst connections from the 90's could make a mini rock n roll hall of fame.

Great thread!

Maybe not mid-80's, since they broke up 82-83, but The Jam.

Golden Palominos

INXS

XTC. I think XTC is most underrated band of any era. One of the greatest bands of all-time and woefully underappreciated. I suppose the fact that they never toured post-English Settlement didn't help them.

Others...
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Slint
Dramarama
The The
Mekons
the 80's was a great decade for music

From synth rock to hard rock, there was fantastic music all around. The post punk era made punk more accessible, and while synth technology led to a lot of bad usage, it also added a new dimension.

Good call on XTC. They did play the occasional show every now and then, even if they didn't tour. I saw them at Tower Records on 72nd St in NYC to promote Oranges & Lemons. It was just a promo gig and they played maybe 4 songs.

any list of college radio bands at my U would have started with the Talking Heads.

Some great bands listed, been a fan of XTC since the Drums and Wires days. Some of the wryest songwriting around.

A friend of a friend's was in a local band called Gravel Pit and we used to see them play the same places with gravel pit opening.

Good times.

I grew up in a different era (late 90s early 00s hip-hop) but love checking out music from other eras. I've literally never heard of the vast majority of these bands and am excited to check them out!

Saw them in Hoboken in the 90s. I had Scotty's Lament as my ring tone for awhile.

SO as some of you older guys might remember, I went to college in the mid-west. The best bands that would come through town were:

Dr Bop and Headliners
Famous Vacationers
Eddy Clearwater-The Chief

My radio show on WRFL was heavily

The Ramones
Rem
The Tubes
The Police
The Cars
Devo
Inxs

Too many to remember. Fun days for sure.
Does Operation Ivy qualify?

Probably my favorite from the mid to late 80s. Dead Milkmen and Husker Du were pretty good too. I wasn't old enough to know any of this back then. I was pretty much Guns 'n Roses back then. Maybe Poison too.

Great memories and great additions to you op by many.

I would add 3 of my favorites that I still listen to today:
- The Church
- Hoodoo Gurus
- The Alarm

Great thread!
the college rock term is linked to R.E.M.
Producer : 1/14/2022 9:21 pm : link
as the term was popularized with the rise of that band. And it didn't hurt that they came out of a big college town.

James and Midnight Oil. Big fan of the early alt-country bands such as the Silos and Vulgar Boatmen. Janas Hoyt and the Mary Janes, from the Silos/Vulgar Boatmen tree, had a couple of great albums in the 90's. Very unknown but as good or better than anything from Lucinda Williams IMO.
