Scott Pioli surprise coming?

AnnapolisMike : 1/14/2022 9:50 am
What are the chances we are going to get a surprise announcement that Scott Pioli or some other person with GM experience will be the new GM or Director of Football Operations? Someone with experience would have more clout to insist on front office reorganization. You are unlikely to see that with a first time GM.

Papa and Banks interviewed him this fall (and just reposted it). They spent their last podcast (BLEAV in Giants) talking about him again with Chris Bisignano from the Giants Insider. He certainly has a good tree (several of which are being interviewed). Yes...he has negatives, but any former GM/Coach will as well. Coughlin and Belichick did OK.

For me...the Giants going with a first time GM says they may not want to change the organizational structure. Which if we are going to be honest, is probably the biggest problem right now.
if they wanted to hire Pioli, why not announce it?
Greg from LI : 1/14/2022 9:53 am : link
Why be secretive?
Pioli was the guy I expected all along,
Section331 : 1/14/2022 9:53 am : link
experienced, known to the Mara's, the BB connection, but I would think if it were going to happen, we would have heard rumblings by now. I would expect they'll name someone late next week, so that doesn't give them a lot of time. And there are already leaks about how good Joe Schoen's interview went, so I suspect he's the leader in the clubhouse.
So you think they are interviewing 9 candidates
Mike from Ohio : 1/14/2022 9:54 am : link
but plan on hiring someone else?

That really makes no sense at all.
I think there's probably no chance
Bill in UT : 1/14/2022 9:54 am : link
it's anyone who doesn't go thru the current interview process
You asked for opinions
arniefez : 1/14/2022 9:54 am : link
mine is 0.0 chance there is anyone hired above the GM as a president/CEO type. The Mara's have that covered.

My guess is he is not in play for GM...more of a Director of Football operations. It would also seem preordained like the Gettleman hire. They are not making that mistake again.

The announced interviews are only those they had to ask permission to interview.
I understand the argument
Jint Fan in Buc Land : 1/14/2022 10:01 am : link
But a retread who's been out of the game could also be a yes man fine with the status quo just to get back into the game again.

A young guy looking for a real opportunity to lead could set up a plan up front and establish boundaries to make sure he's not hamstrung and ultimately fired
I thought Pioloi was a possibility
jvm52106 : 1/14/2022 10:02 am : link
but, they aren't wasting time with 9 candidates to hire a 10th who hasn't been included in the names they will interview. NO.

Is a know nothing turd. Banks is just pitching Belichick guys. They’re not hiring someone they don’t announce an interview with.
Hopefully not.
Big Blue '56 : 1/14/2022 10:04 am : link
Hypothetically, if he’s the guy, then wasting your time on 9 potentials increases the chance of losing a desirable HC candidate, imo
Hiring Pioli...
Drewcon40 : 1/14/2022 10:06 am : link
...woukd disappoint me, personally. I am not stating he wouldn't do a good job but I am hoping for Schoen, Hortiz, or Peters.

Nice to see you back! Well...they have to waste time interviewing a couple to satisfy league rules. I think it is strange that the voice of the Giants is pushing a guy who is not being considered for something.
Nothing against Pioli
Biteymax22 : 1/14/2022 10:12 am : link
But they have a really good list of candidates and I'd be hard pressed to see them not get wow'd by at least 1 of them, if not more than 1...

Thanks Mike. Always great to see you. Question: other than the minority “have-tos” mandated by the league, are there other rules in place? We’ve already interviewed Wilson or does that not qualify because they didn’t meet live?
I think Pioli's time has passed by
JonC : 1/14/2022 10:14 am : link
He's really only talked about here because of the Parcells' tree ties.

That would do it as I understand. Also a really bad look. Pioli probably only makes sense as a Dir of Football operations or GM with a strong Assistant GM.
I think the list of 9 candidates makes it obvious
Ben in Tampa : 1/14/2022 10:18 am : link
They are not considering Pioli or anyone from the old “Giants Way”
Common theme in what's known about the GM search is
Shecky : 1/14/2022 10:27 am : link
they seem to be mostly younger, forward thinking guys - the "new way" as opposed to the "Giants Way" Pioli would be a 180 right back to what got us into this mess - the Giants Way. So I wouldnt expect this at all. Never know though.
We don’t know who is talking to who with 100% certainty.
Giant John : 1/14/2022 10:35 am : link

...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/14/2022 10:37 am : link
Huh? Wouldn't he be on the list already?
Of all the prospective GMs...
bw in dc : 1/14/2022 10:44 am : link
mentioned, Pioli is at the bottom of the list. Hell, he shouldn't even be on the list. I really see no appeal.

Once he left New England, where he won all those ExOTY awards largely due to riding BB's coattails, Piolo only had modest results in KC and ATL.

Hard pass.
No thanks

To Pioli
Re: Re: Re: Hopefully Not
clatterbuck : 1/14/2022 11:11 am : link
Pure speculation, but maybe they reached out to Pioli and he's just not up for the grind at this stage in his life. Also, most of the candidates are younger at that seems to be the direction ownership is going.
Why does anyone think Pioli would be good?
Milton : 1/14/2022 11:14 am : link
He's never succeeded as the guy in charge.
p.s.--And the Giants don't need to be reorganized, they just need to do a better job acquiring personnel and keeping them healthy.
Pioli's shot here was 15 years ago

Not so sure about that. They could've already been talking to Pioli for months now and may be looking for an Asst. GM. Heck, the Giants have been known to draft players without ever interviewing them at the combine, attending their workouts, reaching out to their representation, etc. Just saying don't write it off completely.
maybe Pioli/Poles combo
Platos : 1/14/2022 11:32 am : link
give Pioli some sort of advisory role
The Giants have a massive PR problem, which Mara hinted
mikeinbloomfield : 1/14/2022 11:38 am : link
around in his press conference. They are not going to hire someone they haven't told the fans they're interviewing.

It seems to me that they are going to give the new GM the reins, regardless of who they hire. He's not going to come in here just to be a super scout. He will be allowed to build the organization the way he wants, or what is he doing here.

Not a fan of looking at Pioli. We need new blood, and I don't know that his resume is all that good.

trueblueinpw : 1/14/2022 11:51 am : link
Everyone on the list was working so I think that leaves out Pioli and Riddick.
Giants are looking at GM candidates under the age of 50
kdog77 : 1/14/2022 12:30 pm : link
That means a lot of retreads who are still available (Pioli, Dorsey, Demtrioff, Tannenbaum, etc.) will not get a look this time around and it is probably for the best for the team in the long run. My gut instinct is telling me that John Mara and possibly his brother Chris may be thinking about retiring from running the day to day operations in a few years with the nephew being groomed for President/CEO type responsibilities. Getting a GM in place to handle that transition over next decade would go long way to providing stability.
I want to like
MtDizzle : 1/14/2022 12:36 pm : link
Pioli but his tenure in Kc leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I wouldn’t put too much into what people on the Giants payroll think they should do. In fact I’d say do the opposite.

I'm not necessarily advocating for Pioli. But to say he has not been around winning organizations is complete BS. None of the candidates on the Giants list have succeeded as the guy in charge either.

p.s. The Giants organization is the laughingstock of the NFL. If the Giants have proven ANYTHING over the past 10 years is that they are inept at acquiring personnel. And that deficiency is an indictment of the ENTIRE organization. Hiring a GM and new coach and leaving everything else changes nothing.
Right Hand Man
Shock-Man : 1/14/2022 12:50 pm : link
If whoever is hired as GM wants an experienced right hand I have no problem with that.

Pioli would make sense for Poles. Also maybe Schoen with the Parcells connection.

After what Mara said about the GM and the Head Coach
Mike from Ohio : 1/14/2022 4:49 pm : link
making decisions, what is this position going to do?

And are they going to hire a GM and then bring Pioli in and tell him he's in charge, but they hired his most important person without involving him?

Pioli would be a bad hire, and this process would make no sense.
I dont see this. They're not going to interview 9 guys
