Is the Athletic worth the sub?

shocktheworld : 1/14/2022 11:12 am
I see a lot of smart people on here posting articles from there… Dan Duggan is part of that site? Is it worth the cash? I’m fine to pay for something if I find value in it, I just wasn’t sure if the content was constantly good, or just had a good article every once in awhile.

Thanks for the input! Just having Duggan start the hard line of questioning with Mara about his brother and nephew the other day sold me on him as a reporter.
Yes, if you like reading about sports

Duggan is really good on the Giants beat

It’s also very easy to get it for free or on reduced price. They offer deals all the time.

but am wondering what the NYT purchase of The Athletic is going to change things. One of my favorite writers recently left the Athletic and I suspect it was due to the purchase.
look for promos

i got two years for $24 ($1/month) and it's definitely worth it at that price. i originally subscribed for one year at half price ($30 instead of $60), and then didn't re-subscribe (guess i didn't think it was worth that much). so that may be why they came back and offered me $1/month, but the point is that they're often running promos so try to find one and subscribe once you do.
Absolutely

Really good authors writing stories Giants, Rangers, Yankees and Knicks.
Also enjoy Dane Brugler’s NFL draft analysis.
100%. Excellent read.

Dugan is great covering the Giants. Each team is all sports has a dedicated beat writer. From time to time I will read articles specific to other teams. For $5 or so per month, it is well worth it.

The NY Times just purchased The Athletic. Early signs are they will let it run as is independently. I do hope they keep their word.

Did the same. Was definitely worth it at the new rate.

Also really like their fantasy writer Jake Ciely. Won my league this year with that as the only ranking site I used so my sub had a great ROI.

Yes...definitely...if sports are your thing...worth every penny
George from PA : 1/14/2022 11:48 am : link
Hell, the fantasy stuff by itself is worth it...

I like all the NY sports....and its so good....especially for Giants and Rangers.....the Mets/Yankees get good coverage in regular papers.....but
The content is worth it

but the app is poorly designed and could use a major overall to simplify sorting/finding information quickly. Dan is a great reporter who engages with fans and certainly doesn't let the Giants off the hook when they blunder decisions like other legacy media beat reporters (Schwartz, Vacchiano, etc).
I like it.

I question a lot of these subs that add up through our lives. I hate that the Daily News or Newsday or whatever the NJ paper is want money. But I've never once questioned my Athletic subscription. You get the same as beat writers but on a much more advanced scale.

Dane Brugler's Draft recap alone is worth the price of subscription.
I have had a subscription for a long time

I think it has declined somewhat. I doubt I will renew my subscription.

That draft guide he puts out, which is like 3-400 pages, is worth the price of the subscription on its own for me.
Really appreciate all the feedback!

T-Mobile Tuesdays offers the Athletic for $1 per month often
NYG27 : 1/14/2022 3:59 pm : link
If you have a cell phone using T-Mobile, they often offer the Athletic for 1-2 years for $1 per month.
Depends...

If all you care about is Giants, then yes. If you want Rangers coverage, absolutely not. Rangers coverage went down the toilet when Carp retired. Art Staple and Shayna Goldman are complete garbage. I can't wait until my sub runs out.
Content is good and worth a price
rasbutant : 1/14/2022 11:35 pm : link
But there business is shady. I signed up for a promotion at $10/yr. It auto renewed without any warning at $60/yr. Then this year it again auto renewed at $70/yr. Again no warning no message of increased rate nothing. I canceled and they offered my $20/yr to stay on. FU.

They are just making up pricing and then jacking it up with the hope you will forget about it and not notice the charge on your account.

As you can see above everyone pays a different price.

I have to keep an eye on that, they notified me when my subscription was running out and asked me if I wanted to renew. I think I paid 10 bucks.

Love the articles, but find the site terribly hard to navigate!
I like it as well.

I've been starting to lean this way myself.

Seems like they've gone more long-form overall, at the expense of frequency. But for a paid subscription, I'd like more than 1-2 articles weekly on each of my favorite teams, especially when one of the two weekly pieces is often a mailbag or some other regurgitation of what's already widely discussed elsewhere (particularly on Twitter, and often, the respective Athletic beat writer is well represented on Twitter anyway).

I think they've gotten lost somewhere between being a daily sports page and being more like a Sports Illustrated weekly magazine (but with the ability to filter for your own favorite teams/sports), and I think they try to do both sometimes and end up accomplishing neither.

I'd love it if they could somehow provide daily sports page type punches, along with agate page stuff like standings, scores, and schedules, and also keep the more detailed articles on a weekly basis. Otherwise, I'm starting to wonder what they provide that can't be replicated with Twitter and podcasts (and other beat reporters along with national media outlets). For example, with the Giants, Duggan is great, but does he ever break stories exclusively via the subscription channels (if at all)? Same for Adler with the Yankees, etc.
