I guess my point is to highlight that this offseason really marks a drastic change in a way the Giants operate and that this is the first time since 1979 that we're conducting a true GM search rather than just having a quick chat with a handful of in-house candidates and then hiring the preordained successor anyway
Especially because Gettlemen was hired before the season was over. Which means they couldn't interview any candidates from other teams beforehand. The only reason Gettlemen was available was because Carolina fired his ass the year before.
This is essentially the first truly thorough GM search in the history of the franchise.
I would however the changes to the scouting dept will stackup that will be the key to how the rebuild can really go as our roster and talent (in-house grooming) has been bad as we all know.
Injuries are real and so is next man up .... (Eli/Strahan spoiled us) both took care of their bodies
07 wasn’t a great process either, but in that case you had a successful GM retiring who had put in motion his successor. And oh yeah, Reese won two Super Bowls.
It looks like the present search should have occurred in 2015. You can see Mara's reasoning but really that was the missed opportunity. Perhaps we be in a different place now but there are no guarantees.
This is essentially the first truly thorough GM search in the history of the franchise.
The problem for the Giants is: They haven't really done this, so as an organization, they don't really know how to do it. A weird but related analogy: When Pope Paul died and the College of Cardinals convened to choose his successor, the majority of them had never picked a pope before. A few weeks later, after John Paul I died, they reconvened to do it again. Insider reports at the time said that the selection process was very different. I think that's normal.
There are multiple names from the 2022 list that should be significant upgrades over the type of names on the 2007 and 2018 lists.
Now of course, ownership needs to make an excellent selection (not looking for perfect) from among the GM candidates. Then hopefully the new GM, will have multiple good HC candidates to chose from.
